According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

I am going to email Lord Lucas to thank him

MarshaBradyo · 25/02/2021 17:14

Thanks Shadow and Zeugma

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 17:15

We are currently faced with a full on attack on women's sex-based rights - a misogynist and bullying campaign
Lord Lucas

OvaHere · 25/02/2021 17:15

@GrinitchSpinach

(Sorry, I know, not all Americans wink)

Thank you, Necessary! Much appreciated.

Again, absolute bravissima to every UK woman who's been working, talking, stickering, writing, arguing and persuading. Keep pulling--it's moving!

Thank you. As happy as I am about this pivotal moment it's tinged by sadness because I know American women are today facing a massive uphill battle that's going to be even harder than this one here. Flowers

Lord Lucas: there has been "a full on attack on sex-based women's rights, a misogynistic and bullying campaign"

littlbrowndog · 25/02/2021 17:16

Sort out sex and gender language

highame · 25/02/2021 17:16

Lord Lucas finishing off and talking about the misogyny etc. I can't wait to get to read it because it just is so worth it. Language of sex and gender needs sorting out

littlbrowndog · 25/02/2021 17:16

It’s such a relief to hear measured debate from people who don’t rely on sound bites.

Endofthelinefinally · 25/02/2021 17:18

I have been fortunate to have spent some time in both the HOC and the HOL because of my participation in certain health care related groups. I have met a lot of very interesting people and am completely convinced that the HOL is a Very Good Thing.
Apart from a handful of hereditary peers and a few undeserving cronies they are intelligent, high achievers and generally keep working hard well into their 80s. Including the bishops. The current AB of C is excellent on mental health.

She is not lol

Kettledodger · 25/02/2021 17:18

Just come to this thread I have been following some of the house of lords debates on this. IMO what @RevIMJolly said "It’s like the grown ups have finally entered the room" I personally think it's because they don't have to pander to woke constituents and worry about getting voted out like MPs do. MPs are often just looking at the popularity contest rather than the truth. Though I do think that there is a larger group of people worried about Trans ideology tactics.

GrinitchSpinach · 25/02/2021 17:21

Thanks, Ova. Have a Cake and a Wine on me. You are always so on-point and insightful. You deserve to celebrate today!

SeaShoreGalore · 25/02/2021 17:21

It would be great if anyone could explain for me how this has implications beyond this particular situation?

OvaHere · 25/02/2021 17:22

Though I do think that there is a larger group of people worried about Trans ideology tactics.

I think that's why the points about language were raised. I'm sure many there realise these tactics provide a blue print that could extend beyond anything to do with gender.

Orangeblossom1977 · 25/02/2021 17:22

Bet they don't bother with Twitter either (although did hear a mention of it)

Clymene · 25/02/2021 17:23

In theory, the HoL is an antiquated and outdated anachronism. In practice, it is frequently brilliant.

And I can't remember who mentioned Robert Winston on the GC debate earlier but he has always very politely believed that humans can't change sex as far as I'm aware.

sashagabadon · 25/02/2021 17:23

I have to agree that mother is more appropriate when talking about maternity services. I am not sure the reasons why so many preferred woman?
Mother can be women or trans men ( as per the court judgement with Freddy McConnell ) and so is arguably more inclusive a word as it relates to the person carrying and giving birth to the child regardless of whether they are a woman or a trans man or non binary.
That’s my thinking behind using “mother” anyway

Only a woman (female) can be a mother. They may call themselves men, but no one can really change sex. I fully support a person's right to live as another sex. But no one can actually change sex.
