According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

Tune in live here at 2.30pm to see history in the making: www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/3ca1efa2-16a5-489d-a5a0-5d929bff81f6

Lord True - Strength of feeling in this house and beyond. Govt. will review this matter of language, maternity but also similar (could be use of woman)

Cailleach1 · 25/02/2021 17:06

Someone on another thread said that humans can be hermaphrodites, can impregnate themselves, just spontaneously resulting in their becoming pregnant by themselves!!!!!!

littlbrowndog · 25/02/2021 17:06

Ok thanks. Going to it now

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 17:07

Lord True talking now of a review of the drafting of legislation (they need a full de-Stonewallification of the civil service for a start)

I wonder if this will have any impact on the ONS and the census decision?

highame · 25/02/2021 17:07

Debate asked for and they will try. Must not countenance erasure of women

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 17:07

Wow discussing a full debate on these issues - we must not countenance the erasure of women from legislation.

MutteringDarkly · 25/02/2021 17:08

Lord Hunt "we must not countenance the erasure of women".

FuzzyPuffling · 25/02/2021 17:09

Lord Hunt "we must not countenance the erasure of women".
Oh bless you, Lord Hunt. Yes yes yes.
highame · 25/02/2021 17:09

Inclusive will be kept more generally (not using he when referring to women as it used to)

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 17:09

"We must not erode women from their rightful role in our society (when reviewing the drafting guidance)" - Lord True (minister)

(Sorry, I know, not all Americans wink)

Thank you, Necessary! Much appreciated.

Again, absolute bravissima to every UK woman who's been working, talking, stickering, writing, arguing and persuading. Keep pulling--it's moving!

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

What wonderful reading.

I've just tried to find it on iPlayer and can't see it Sad

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz it is on Parliament Tv, use the link in the OP and just rewind to 2.30pm.

I would also like to thank all the MNetters who have quoted out what is being said and by whom. I will admit I did cry a little at some of them, in a good way, finally people with power questioning the madness.

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 25/02/2021 17:11

I am also loving that this is in trending topics...

Thank you Sunkisses for starting this thread. It has been great to listen in and read the comments.

It feels like something important happened today.

Melroses · 25/02/2021 17:12

@OvaHere

Sal Brinton

There are risks and problems. The law should deal practically with how the world works. People who are legally male can give birth.

Changing language on birth certificates would resolve this... it is a political issue.

Or maybe the problem was creating a legal fiction in the first place and the solution isn't to start altering other people's birth certificates in the service of upholding that fiction. "Living as a man" back in 2004 was never meant to be about getting a GRC then immediately seeking IVF to become pregnant.

That is the problem with a legal fiction.

It has knock-on effects. If you keep changing the law around those effects to accommodate the legal fiction, it begins to affect others. In this case the child.

There needs to be a point at which the fiction ends, otherwise you just ending up having to change the whole world to fit which gets exhausting and expensive for everyone and every institution affected. Then you have to start the reverse for everyone else. It would be never ending.

I could do with a pub / somewhere for us all to celebrate
