I'm a woman and used to be a girl and when I've tried to deal with abuse IN REAL LIFE from random men. No approach works.

Not light hearted. Not arguing. Not being shocked. Not looking scared. Not ignoring...

In fact if a man is a bit drunk then trying to brush off unwelcome advances in a ' light hearted way' more than often leads to an aggressive response.

Yes please tell us more, wisdom man :/

Manderleyagain · 17/02/2021 23:48

I don't think Omid takes free speech seriously as a principal at all. I first noticed him on twitter over a free speech issue. It was the case of a YouTuber who made a distasteful joke (the 'nazi pug' case - potentially clever & funny but taken too far into offensiveness). He was later convicted. Some comedians including David Baddiel were publicly supportive of his right (or the right in general) to make offensive jokes, but omid was publicly not supportive, and was presumably happy with the conviction. Which I thought was a dangerous position for a comedian to take, given that offensiveness is so subjective.

Tho he was ironically on the same side as glinner that time, I seem to remember him joining in the anti-glinner on twitter. But I really think he entered into this completely clueless. I don't believe he thought he was referring to feminists being deplatformed in his first tweet. It's not the only free speech issue in universities. But having discovered that it is partly about that, and he'd walked into something he hadn't understood, he should have paused.

I am too old to understand twitter spats

so where are we now?

everything he says is a bit of a laugh but he will sue for defamation?

who is he suing?

#flummoxed

NiceGerbil · 17/02/2021 23:56

Whatever he thought the reaction is interesting

Things go wonky
Call a lawyer
Try and round up popular well known friends to support you

Because you're being picked on by mean women

Lawyer
Famous friends
(Male)

So I'm sure he doesn't think he does, but he has privilege that he is trying to leverage when things don't go his way.

That fact should make him pause. I'm not on Twitter so can't point it out myself (and what would be the point).

zanahoria · 18/02/2021 00:03

He needs to get off twitter

people lose all sense of perspective during these spats

Sparkyduchess · 18/02/2021 00:26

He’s a monstrous bully.

Amazing how quickly he got to ‘I’m lawyering up’

zanahoria · 18/02/2021 00:29

I am no lawyer but I imagine that if he had contacted one, the first piece of advice would be to get off twitter not to start bragging about his lawyer.

SheGonBringThatAttitudeHome2 · 18/02/2021 07:43

just a bloke who doesn't like to admit he made a mistake..

There are a lot of them about, I've noticed over the years.

(Has anyone pulled a NAMALT yet?)

Lordamighty · 18/02/2021 08:11

Well that escalated quickly. I hope he does take it to court, I’m definitely up for that crowdfunder.
To think I’ve actually paid for tickets to go & see him in the past.

Sophoclesthefox · 18/02/2021 08:54

I can never be bothered with a Twitter spat, as I can never usually be arsed to untangle who said what to whom, so can someone please help me understand what the lawyer will actually be doing? Djalili thinks he’s been defamed because Dr EM said he calls women Nazis?

I did enjoy the use of the passive voice in one of his tweets “thus we have a defamation case”, as if it had independently manifested itself like an act of god, and wasn’t because he saw his arse on Twitter Grin

Mate, we’re all on a hair trigger in lockdown, have a coffee, calm yourself down and take the lawyer off speed dial.

HermitsLife · 18/02/2021 08:58

Oh wow, what a knob.

Do you think he'll wake up with a bad head and 'the fear'?

Calling David Baddiel in of all people when he's been chucking about Nazi and Adolf and Eva Braun for the past two days is just the cherry on the cake.

SunsetBeetch · 18/02/2021 09:00

Regardless of how it started, the way it's ended is very notgood.

nauticant · 18/02/2021 09:09

IIRC the BBC news article didn't have the Selina Todd bit in when I first read it yesterday morning - that was added later. I may be misremembering though.

You might have been remembering correctly depending on when you accessed the article @Aha85. This was the version very early morning on Tuesday (Tue, 16 Feb 2021 01:34:38 GMT):

<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20210216012635if_/www.bbc.com/news/education-55995979" rel="nofollow" target="blank">web.archive.org/web/20210216012635if/www.bbc.com/news/education-55995979

Selina Todd was not in the original article but was added later so the relevant paragraph was present in a version at Tue, 16 Feb 2021 08:27:29 GMT.

It looks like the article was amended in response to the contributions made by Todd and Tatchell in the Today programme on Radio 4 on Tuesday just after 7am.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 18/02/2021 09:13

His comic skills coming through there.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 18/02/2021 09:18

Selina Todd was not in the original article but was added later so the relevant paragraph was present in a version at Tue, 16 Feb 2021 08:27:29 GMT.

His tweet was 2 hours after revision.

Helmetbymidnight · 18/02/2021 09:18

That's really interesting that the article changed.

The one on Omid's link has 3 paras (not one line) on Selina Todd - they wouldn't automatically have gone on there, would they?

Omid wrote "Blocking me will not help her" - eurgh. how ...crude.

Helmetbymidnight · 18/02/2021 09:21

Underneath the twitter spat, he posted that sweet video of a guy skating, then falling in Amsterdam.

Free spirit. Comedy. Resilience. Strength. Teamwork. Triumph. Ladies and gentlemen, humanity

How ironic. How very unlike how he has behaved in the last 24 hours.

nauticant · 18/02/2021 09:23

Omid Djalili's original tweet that links to the BBC article, twitter.com/omid9/status/1361620826089549826, was at 10:17 AM · Feb 16, 2021 so it's reasonable to assume he was referring to a version that had been amended to include a paragraph about Selina Todd.

nauticant · 18/02/2021 09:24

Cross-post with ZuttZeVootEeeVro.

PotholeParadies · 18/02/2021 10:24

Well, it's the next day now, and David Baddiel still has not deigned to involve himself in Djalili's twitter spat, even though Omid directly tagged him in.

As I said before, David Baddiel responded to one person within the thread who mentioned buying his latest book, and that was it. If this was a Regency novel, we'd say that he'd given Omid the cut direct!

Seems that David Baddiel, who has 729k followers, a successful writing career for both adults and children and his own up-coming tour, feels he doesn't need to court Djalili's favour. Fancy that.

Someone should send Omid a copy of David's latest book Jews Don't Count, which discusses casual anti-semitism.

BarbaraofKent · 18/02/2021 10:28

He is pissy now because he clearly didn't read the article thoroughly and his virtue signalling attempt has backfired and now people are calling him a misogynist, which is like, really inconvenient for a man who is trying to look progressive (ask Owen Jones!)

How is he being 'abused'?

Haven't the woke bros been telling us 'It's called holding someone to account actually' for the last few weeks?

Manderleyagain · 18/02/2021 10:35

The one on Omid's link has 3 paras (not one line) on Selina Todd - they wouldn't automatically have gone on there, would they? Yes it will have automatically changed. If you share a news link and make a sarky comment about the headline, and then they change the headline, your sarky comment no longer works and you look daft. So it's possible omid read the original version, then tweeted it 2 hours later after it was changed, but seems unlikely. He just didn't read it properly & didn't take on board the reference to Todd. An awful lot of male commentaters on twitter seem to be very surprised (or just ignoring the fact) that a good chunk of the academics who are pressured not to share their opinions are feminists who think sex is v significant.

nauticant · 18/02/2021 10:38

Remember the state of establishment comedy before 1980? And how much of it was swept away in a wave of being able to say forbidden things? The alternative comedy movement is now the establishment and much of its energy seems go into policing what is permitted. It's an interesting mirror image.

Hopefully we'll be getting a positive counter-reaction at some point in the near future.

BarbaraofKent · 18/02/2021 10:41

Yes, have seen that - DB replied to someone in the thread, so has clearly seen the tweet, but hasn't come to defend OD. Ouch!

RoyalCorgi · 18/02/2021 10:42

Trying to imagine Omid's conversation with his solicitor:

Omid: I want to sue a woman for libel because she had the nerve to accuse me of calling women Nazis.

Solicitor: I see. And what did you say that made her claim that?

Omid: I said women were Nazis. And then I addressed her as Adolf.

Solicitor: Trying to put this gently, Omid, but I think you're going to struggle with this one...
