Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Solidarity in Aldi today!

JaneyHenderson · 13/02/2021 18:08

This is my first thread in a very long time but I wanted to share the uplifting and fabulous experience I had today in Aldi😂

I reached 'peak' during the last lockdown and lurk regularly on here while trying to make sense of the madness.
DH is supportive to a degree but very nervous of me being vocal about my GC views as we are both teachers. I am a middle leader in a secondary school and he worries about me getting sackedConfused
So I can't discuss this much IRL.

Anyway, queing outside Aldi today and saw a woman a few people ahead of me with a 'Woman
Noun
adult human female' tote bag. I was thrilled and as soon as there was an opportunity (by the fruit and vegWink) I told her I liked her bag and that I knew what it meant.
She said I had made her day; I replied I she had made mine. Then she said 'Solidarity sister and see you on the next march'
We went on our separate ways but bloody hell it was brilliant. To vocalise it and be recognised. Felt a bit emotional and even now re-writing it, am a bit teary.

Just wanted to share. It was wonderful.

@ShowOfHands no they don't make me change sex if I wear trousers obvs.
But I'd have thought that gender critical means you wouldn't confirm to any gender stereotypes at all. So I'm not sure if I am really GC .

@MoodyMarshall thank you!
So if asked your gender what do you say? Obvs sex is woman but gender do you say non binary or something ? Or is non binary only used for sex? Confused

gardenbird48 · 13/02/2021 19:10

I'd be quite keen to take one into a Lush store and see if I get chucked out. Then I would go to The Body Shop and see what happens there.... Grin Grin

(for those who haven't seen the hoo ha, Lush (smelly stuff shop) stated that people who believe in biology and support women's rights are banned and The Body Shop mocked a survivor of domestic abuse for telling her story so they can get lost too.)

Hetilia · 13/02/2021 19:10

Do you think it's possible to change sex MrDarcysMa?

Mrsmorton · 13/02/2021 19:10

For any posters who are genuine, and don't understand...

woman
/ˈwʊmən/

noun
plural noun: women
an adult female human being.
"a drawing of a young woman"

This definition is apparently, transphobic. It is an act of resistance to wear mercy with this definition on, there was a whole "billboard" thing and a very ling history. Posie Parker's video above is explanatory.

ArabellaScott · 13/02/2021 19:12

tbh if this is the hill my career dies on, so be it.

Lovely story, OP. When I see friends on social media liking posts by Standing for Women, etc, it gives my heart a little leap. I know that many of them can't be openly questioning the ideology because of their jobs. So - guarded comments, tiny, quiet wee revolutions. It all adds up.

Maybe I'll order a bag, too. Smile

MoodyMarshall · 13/02/2021 19:12

@MrDarcysMa

When someone asks me my gender, I say 'my sex is female, I don't believe in gender'.

I reply that my sex is female. If probed I'll add that gender is a social construct to oppress women and girls.

MoodyMarshall · 13/02/2021 19:13

Although come to think of it, the only question I've ever been asked about gender is, 'Miss, do you believe that there are 99 genders? I bet you do!'. WRONGGGGGGGGGG Grin

Humans are either male or female. There is no nonbinary sex.

donquixotedelamancha · 13/02/2021 19:13

I thought all teachers were firmly signed up to the twaw dogma.

Oh God no, very few. Factual education about biological sex is one of the very few areas of the national curriculum still remaining mandatory for all schools.

The problem isn't so much the small number of nutters in teaching so much as the fact that schools rely on guidance documents and on advice from Social Workers or CAHMS counsellors; the Genderists have captured a lot of that.

Also when parents come already convinced their kids can change sex by Mermaids the school will have difficulty saying no.

GCITC · 13/02/2021 19:14

Such a lovely story OP, I'm really hoping she sees this thread!

InTheFamilyTree · 13/02/2021 19:15

Love this thread. Taking my kid to childcare t'other day I noticed a some adult human female stickers, it made me unfeasibly optimistic on a crap day. Have started my own local sticker campaign Halo

DNHandTNS · 13/02/2021 19:16

Redbubble has all sorts of good stuff so that's interesting , thanks OP Flowers I've bought home decor and clothes from there, gifts and all sorts. Going to look at the Pro Woman art now :)

ArabellaScott · 13/02/2021 19:16

Long answer - we could discuss some gender theory, which is quite interesting, societal stereotypes, culturally agreed upon standards of masculinity and femininity, etc, how these impact on people in both positive and negative ways.

Short answer - I'm female. I would say everyone is 'non-binary', if it wasn't an impossible idea that contains an oxymoron (if one is 'outside' the binary, then it can't be a binary as that would be creating a third category. There is no third sex. (I believe the correct term is 'bimodal', for what it's worth)).

InTheFamilyTree · 13/02/2021 19:16

Great there are so many GC women in schools, reassuring and definitely a protective factor for vulnerable kids.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/02/2021 19:17

I'm East Mids ... if I see any fellow Viper with a T Shirt or bag I'll be over there (mask/socially distanced) like a shot to say hi Grin

Carouselfish · 13/02/2021 19:18

Secondary teacher too.

In the staff room all my department are eye rollingly gc.

We taught a whole scheme on stereotyping, stereotypical gender roles etc with outcome that y7 are now very 'you can be a boy or girl without conforming'. Hooray!
Also taught few lessons on media bias and how to know if websites and news was reliable. Teach critical thinking, looking at both sides of an argument and hope for the best!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/02/2021 19:19

Brilliant thread!

CranberriesChoccyAgain · 13/02/2021 19:20

@MrDarcysMa

Hi all, I'm quite new to this. I have a question which I think might be stupid or obvious but I'm not sure ? I think I'm GC in theory but I do wear mainly women's clothing and I suppose I follow the gender norms associated with being a woman. Does this make me GC, are you all GC If you wear mascara, flowers dresses, do the childcare at home etc ? Hope this makes sense x
It's not as much about how YOU dress or present (imo), it's about not believing a person changes their sex category by dressing differently. Things like clothing and makeup and hairstyles are often gendered but they don't make someone male or female.

Someone else might have a better explanation.

donquixotedelamancha · 13/02/2021 19:20

But I'd have thought that gender critical means you wouldn't confirm to any gender stereotypes at all. So I'm not sure if I am really GC

No, it means you regard most stereotypes about biological sex to be wrong and based in social construction (this is objectively true but the majority of the population seem to think differently) and that you regard sex stereotypes (gender) to be harmful and to be the mechanism by which women are structurally disadvantaged.

Your personal gender expression has little to do with being GC.

It is not uncommon to see GC used as a shorthand for 'believes biological sex exists' but of course lots of people who are like traditional gender roles or who don't care either way still acknowledge that humans have two sexes- that doesn't make them GC.

ArabellaScott · 13/02/2021 19:21

Love this,it's like being in a secret club or society! I've just treated myself to a tote bag for my birthday 🎂
