SNP lists - attacks on Joan McAlpine

Today, the SNP NEC met to, supposedly, discuss an emergency definition of transphobia. This was not forthcoming.

What did happen, however, was this. Despite being told this was illegal, the chair put it to the vote and it passed with the support of unelected members with a declared conflict of interest.

We are very worried that this has been done to knock Joan McAlpine off the top list spot for Southern Scotland.

Irrespective of this, we are horrified that a political party would break the law like this.

It is absolute madness. And the notion of self declared disability is awful. And the idea that pretty much anyone is going to fall under that umbrella (except Joan McAlpine).

It really is not a good look for the party at all.

I assume the NEC is a sort of party policy committee. Can it be over ruled by Sturgeon or Murrell or is that now set in stone?

Would love to have been a fly on the Zoom call.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 31/01/2021 21:55

The chair, who pushed it through is loyal to Sturgeon / Murrell

The election last year was supposed to be a reaction to the "woke" with women like Lynne Anderson, Caroline McAllister and allies taking key roles. However, the NEC also has unelected roles for branches (which were targeted) and affiliated groups like Out for Indy and they have sufficient numbers to hold things in balance.

This seems to serve the Murrells, very well.

teawamutu · 31/01/2021 21:56

What can be done? If it's likely to be overturned in court, can we dig?

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 31/01/2021 22:19

All kicking off on Twitter. SNP MP Alison Thewliss has said that they can break ("test") the Equality Act because they are the biggest party!

MerchedCymru · 31/01/2021 22:21

This is stupifying. Corrupt and self-serving behaviour by SNP NEC: priority candidates will be drawn from BAME or disabled groups only - a direct attempt to oust MSP Joan McAlpine who is neither.

In an unexpected / expected twist, several transactivists have suddenly come out as disabled and are intending to stand.

We'll dig our way to Oz to support the fightback against this anti-women, anti-democratic attack.

MerchedCymru · 31/01/2021 22:23

Just saw that Alice. This is a full-frontal attack on women's sex-based rights and those who are fighting to retain them.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/01/2021 22:34

It's so blatant.

HubertHerbert · 31/01/2021 22:41

Good grief.

Self ID'd disability? It was only a matter of time anyway, what a circus.

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2021 22:42

Following.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/01/2021 22:43

I wonder what would happen if the populace of scotland self identified as disabled and claimed benefits on that basis.

It's madness.

For flip's sake. Has anyone in the party stuck their neck out and stood against this?
MerchedCymru · 31/01/2021 22:51

The Wings piece points out that three people announced conflicts of interest before the vote (which was decided by the Chair's casting vote) but only one withdrew on that basis. The other two intend to stand for a disability priority place and also voted in favour.

We just completed the consultation on standards in public life, giing a number of examples of their non-existence. Could have written an entire tome on this meeting alone.

ForWomenScot have an excellent thread on this:

Shock

Ready to dig for Joan (despite the fact I could not be more done with the SNP)

Self IDing as disabled is as utterly disgusting as self IDing as a woman. Every time I read “I identify as” it is a synonym for “I am not”.

MissBarbary · 31/01/2021 23:57

It's come to something when Wings Over Scotland is the voice of sanity and reason.

MissBarbary · 01/02/2021 00:02

I see that Josh Aaron Mennie, on being mentioned on Wings site, has accused Wings of being a right-wing Unionist blogger.

BettyFilous · 01/02/2021 00:03

What a bunch of contemptible wankers. Hardly inspires confidence about how they’d manage an independent Scotland, does it?

Another who is happy to dig for Joan. Just say the word Joan. 💐

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/02/2021 00:08

I thought it would be a cold day in hell before I found myself agreeing with wings over scotland and yet, here we are.

I'm presuming he is advocating for Alec Salmond?

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/02/2021 00:10

Whole thread in Scotsnet accusing anyone who is anti SNP of being right wing

MissBarbary · 01/02/2021 00:34

I am anti-SNP. I vote Conservative ergo I'm right wing too. Am I supposed to be embarrassed by this?

I used to be very left- wing (embarrassingly so) I was anti- SNP then too.

littlbrowndog · 01/02/2021 00:46

Honestly SNP what they will do to keep women out

Do the SNP. Really think our country won’t notice ?

That the scotsnet =/= Scotland one? Weird bloody premise for a thread

Yes the cybernats seem to be back out in force all over social media..reminds me of 2014.
GaelicButter · 01/02/2021 01:24

I remember my grandad was very interested in Scottish nationalism as a concept, and how it could be achieved. He was a skilled draughtsman in the Clyde shipyards.

He'd have admired Joan M very much.

WouldBeGood · 01/02/2021 01:49

Just woke up, flicked through Twitter and saw this latest madness.
