SNP lists - attacks on Joan McAlpine

Today, the SNP NEC met to, supposedly, discuss an emergency definition of transphobia. This was not forthcoming.

What did happen, however, was this. Despite being told this was illegal, the chair put it to the vote and it passed with the support of unelected members with a declared conflict of interest.

We are very worried that this has been done to knock Joan McAlpine off the top list spot for Southern Scotland.

Irrespective of this, we are horrified that a political party would break the law like this.

Lots of private ambulances about for a start.

I am so sad that Joan McAlpine has been targeted, she's only been doing her job! She was chair I believe of the census committee on sex vs gender.

The main problem for Scotland with constant banging on about 'IndyRef 2' and blatant failure to respect the 'once in a lifetime' outcome in 2014, is that no one wants to invest any more money in Scotland. Why would a doctor from England/Wales move to Scotland and buy a house with the constant threat of separation hanging over them? Ditto higher rate taxpayers already here, wondering at what point they need to sell up and move back to another part of the UK for their retirement so they don't have to worry so much about politics and switch the tv off everytime a certain someone appears because they are still traumatised from 2014.

@MoltenLasagne

It goes to show how much people allow themselves to do bad things if they believe themselves to be righteous.

It seems to go like this "I want to do this highly questionable/possibly illegal thing but I am not a bad person. Because I am a good person, the thing I think needs doing must in fact be a good thing. Anyone who questions me doing this thing must therefore be a bad person."

I think it has moved beyond that. Some of them seem to revel in their own awfulness.

This NHS being privatised in England claim is a good example of the culture the SNP have fostered. It just isn't true, and there are tonnes of similar untruths that they have pushed and encouraged. Many of them utterly ridiculous like secret oil fields or whisky taxes. Others are plausible such as Scotland paying for the London Olympics or crossrail, however in the Scottish governments own figures all their examples show Scotland contributes zero.

It is this culture of untruths that has led to this situation with TRAs and women's rights and the toxicity surrounding it. You can't question anything because to do so will cause the whole edifice to fall over.

For anyone who wants to read for themselves what is and isn't true about NHS privatisation, below is a whole website dedicated to analysing the facts of the issue. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the SNP, or Scottish independence. Or Scotland, actually.

Thanks everyone who answered my questions about how broader SNP members/policies relate to the self-ID movement. I just saw on twitter that Joanna Cherry has been fired from the front bench.

To be back on topic - it is dreadful that Joan is being targeted like this - she's an outstanding advocate for women and girls. Hopefully the more light that is shone on this policy, the more people will complain.

prisencolinensinainciusol2 · 01/02/2021 14:24

What the fuck is "an emergency definition of transphobia" when it's at home?

happygolurkey · 01/02/2021 14:25

There are plenty of other places to share views on the merits or otherwise of dissolving the union

yes, agree

Floppywin · 01/02/2021 14:37

I like and admire Cherry, whilst also disagreeing with lots of her politics.

I would rather UK continues with Scotland as part of it; however, it is in everyone's interests for the SNP to have a leader that can be trusted to tell the truth as it is.

Hopefully, Joanna Cherry will be able to speak her mind more freely on lots of subjects, other than independence, and could there be something positive from this?

I definitely qualify as disabled by SNP criteria and I DO NOT WANT THIS REPRESENTATION.

If disability representation means electing incompetent shouty loudmouth transactivist green haired fuckwits who say they have BPD then I would prefer to have less of it. This will have the inevitable effect of rewarding shameless scammers.

Plus, having self-identified disabled people as disability representatives is about as effective as having self-identified women as female representatives. Different disability groups have very different needs and the more severely disabled or the people less inclined to use disability as a political label will end up entirely unrepresented while the shouty green haired fuckwits claim to speak for their interests.

WouldBeGood · 01/02/2021 14:52

@prisencolinensinainciusol2 it follows on from the NS video the other night. An emergency meeting of the NEC was called. They didn’t agree that at the weekend, but did vote against legal advice so that they could self identify as disabled to get on the lists. It’s really bizarre.
