Personal statement condemning transphobia in response to the number of young members leaving and giving this as their reason.

Well well well.

Many people, including my husband and I did not vote in that "ballot". I think we posted back empty envelopes as Soutar would have to pay for the postage.

Soutar was a big donor to SNP although hasn't done so since Sturgeon became leader.

NecessaryScene1 · 28/01/2021 14:18

proposals that people shouldn’t be arrested for stating facts

I just find it a bit boggling that to get a piece of legislation through they're adding a bunch of amendments listing things you are permitted to say.

If you find yourself needing to write such a list, maybe there's a larger problem?

BlackForestCake · 28/01/2021 14:25

If I remember correctly this was the reason Soutar stopped backing the SNP.

But it’s Sturgeon’s statement that’s interesting.

Scottish National Party education spokeswoman, Nicola Sturgeon, said the result confirmed that many Scots were concerned about repeal.

Like a wise politician, she promised to address the concerns that over a million people claimed to have, whether justified or not.

What she did not do is call them bigots and threaten them with prison.

She was far less wrong then than she is now.

MissBarbary · 28/01/2021 14:37

If I remember correctly this was the reason Soutar stopped backing the SNP.

No continued making substantial donations until Sturgeon became leader; including £1,000,000 for the separatist campaign in 2014 (I'm glad he wasted so much money on that)

MissBarbary · 28/01/2021 14:43

Just in case anyone missed it here is Cherry talking about the lack of support from Sturgeon. You (general you) gender critical women are fooling yourselves if you think Sturgeon is ever going to be "gender critical"

Ah, very interesting links to Sturgeon's history with Section 28, thanks for sharing. I'd almost forgotten about Soutar and his donations.

Who thinks that?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/01/2021 15:02

Wings Over Scotland piece where he is attempting to join some dots. Interesting read with some pertinent observations.

Wbeezer · 28/01/2021 15:04

Days before social media pile ons, politicians could get away with publicy starting they were going to talk to both sides. I think this is partly what is causing us relative "oldies" such agitation, namely that we keep expecting issues to be dealt with in a more even handed way as they once were, but times have changed and the way politics is done had moved on.

Tootsweets23 · 28/01/2021 15:09

This is what drives me nuts about nationalism - it is very much "don't like my values? I have others". So a vote to leave the UK in 2014 was very much a vote to leave the EU, as confirmed by the EU commissioned x 2 letters to the Scottish government. Scroll forward, now EU membership is a deal breaker and justification for another referendum.

The moveable feast that is their principles applies to everything including gay and women's rights, and can assume trans rights too.

ArabellaScott · 28/01/2021 15:09

Aaah, Eresh. Yes, that puts it all into clear perspective.

WouldBeGood · 28/01/2021 15:10

@Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails

“I mean, NS doesn't really give much of a fuck about nonbinary rights, let's not kid ourselves. NS wants independence”

I’m becoming persuaded by the arguments from commentators like Craig Murray and Wings that Nicola Sturgeon actually doesn’t want independence - and that this is the issue at the heart of the war on Alex Salmon and Cherry, who is aligned with Salmond and is backing the current legal hearing to establish whether a S30 order is the only route to a legitimate referendum.

I’d much rather see Cherry in charge of the party.

I think this is the root of it all.

It’s good old faction fighting, like in the days of the Tudor court.

I’m not an SNP supporter but I do rate Joanna Cherry and her constant support of women. I was really upset last night by that video. And angry. No such outcry for abused women. It’s despicable.

ArabellaScott · 28/01/2021 15:12

Highly recommend reading that Wings article above, Wouldbe. It really does shed a lot of light on the matter.

'transphobia' is a dead cat thrown onto the table. It's a speech designed to be upsetting and cause uproar.

WouldBeGood · 28/01/2021 15:18

Yes, I’m following the debate/spat on Twitter.

My beef with it all is from the GC feminist viewpoint, but I’m fascinated by the machinations that have been going on and the attempts to obfuscate.

BlackForestCake · 28/01/2021 15:18

It's clear now, if it wasn’t originally, why all sorts of wokies were and are so keen to shut down Wings (and Craig Murray). And it’s not because he was abrasive and swore a lot.

WouldBeGood · 28/01/2021 15:19

It did upset me nonetheless. Just so fed up of women being thrown under a bus for any old reason

Rosa2021 · 28/01/2021 15:23

Thank you for all your explanations, I suppose every time you tweet you have to imagine what it would like out of context. Glad I just lurk!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/01/2021 15:47

Same here!

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 28/01/2021 15:50

NS would throw anyone under the bus to get what she wants. Disgusting vile women.

Wbeezer · 28/01/2021 16:09

I read a lot of the comments, interesting but I actually think that perhaps the most likely explanation is one of the simplest, that she was sooking up to the Greens to ensure they vote with her to get the budget passed.

littlbrowndog · 28/01/2021 16:44

Interesting from the wings blog

derxa · 28/01/2021 20:22

I'm not sure that she's vile but the first part is true. She's very clever and articulate and has got her 'I'm better than Boris' message across. Her Twitter message was fine. Who wants trans people to be abused. But it was virtue signalling to young Scottish voters. Who cares if women are worried about women's rights. That's not trendy at all. Us very untrendy rural folk out here mainly can't stand her according to my very scientifically carried out opinion poll my conversations in the local shop
yestheyhavethesamedad · 28/01/2021 20:58

It was actually worse that , a lot that left , did so before humzas amendment , they left because the snp were bullied into voting for johan lamonts medical examiner bill , that gave rape victims the right to choose the sex of their examiner.
The ones that left then , that included mridhul left telling rape victims they were bigots and transphobes and many joined the greens because they were more inclusive .
