Last few days to support For Women Scotland's fundraising

Just spotted a tweet from Sarah Phillimore that the hearing is on 6th and 7th January, there is £18k to go to hit the target!

I thought/hoped some of you might be up for a bit of last minute seasonal digging to support them.

For those who don't know, FWS are challenging the Scottish Government's redefinition of "woman" to include men, whilst excluding some women. This has implications for the Equality Act throughout the UK.

Please google For Women Scotland and "judicial review" to find the page- Direct links to it here will result in the thread being removed.

Happy New Year to all the FWR gardeners; may this year be a fruitful one.

MedusasBrandyButter · 02/01/2021 21:25

Big sigh. Such a dirty trick, increasing their costs like that. Digging...

Thanks - just contributed.

This is in the Scottish Times today, Scottish Youth Parliament backs gender move, this will make FWS work even more important:

Angryresister · 03/01/2021 11:19

This is another really important case. Donated. Wondering if this could have an effect on rest of UK or if it is specific to Scotland?

BetsyM00 · 03/01/2021 12:55

Angryresister This particular law is specific to Scotland but if it's not challenged then it sets a precedent for other nations in the UK to introduce laws with a definition of "woman" that differs from that given in the Equality Act. So it does have wider significance.

I'm on PIP and UC and I'm always a bit embarrassed to be so skint but I've got my little trowel out. Many a mickle makes a muckle as my old dad says.

Judicial Review to be held at 10am on Thursday, 7th and Friday 8th January.

It will be a virtual hearing on both days. Anyone can listen in by dialing a number and entering the appropriate access code. There is a max number of connections, but I don't know what it is.

Information about how to listen in on the case is described on this page -
www.scotcourts.gov.uk/coming-to-court/access-to-virtual-hearings

There are strict guidelines for a virtual hearing (no recording, take great care when posting on social media etc), so please read all the information on the page carefully before you dial in.

Any social media comment in relation to the proceedings of other types of court case during the course of a hearing:

must be fair and accurate
must not be in Contempt of Court
must not be prejudicial to the court case

It looks as though a commentary would be fine. Only for certain cases the strictest rules.

Unfortunately I can't listen but hope someone will give us the low down.

ApplePenPineapplePen · 07/01/2021 10:34

Talking about this on Women's Hour now but the For Women Scotland rep has audio issues

SarahBeenysBikerJacket · 07/01/2021 11:29

Missed it, was it any good?

Manderleyagain · 07/01/2021 14:41

Is anyone live tweeting the proceedings?

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2021 15:02

I hope so, Manderley, I see that public can attend by emailing a request, but I'm not sure how to. Plus - homeschooling etc ...
