Just spotted this in the New Year Honours list:

Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
Professor Kathleen Mary Linn Stock. Professor of Philosophy, University of Sussex. For services to Higher Education. (Lewes, East Sussex)

Excellent to see her getting some positive recognition!

Trans activists are complaining about anyone accepting an Order of the British Empire. Or accepting an award from the anarchronistic and corrupt UK honours system.

Stephen Whittle OBE is yet to comment. Same for Sir Ian McKellen.

I'm not normally one to celebrate honours lists (on the unlikely chance I'd be offered one I like to think I'd turn it down) but this is quite funny. I wonder what Baroness Hunt of Bethnal Green or Michael Cashman CBE think about accepting titles.

Silly, when Baroness Hunt or Stephen Whittle accept an OBE its obviously IRONIC and a protest statement.

When a normal boring female accepts it it's obviously IMPERIALISM and evidence of secret networks of privilege. Kathleen Stock is totally a time-travelling plant from the future rightwing-fascist-lesbian-christian borg, come to vanquish the brave academics fighting for the rights of penises to go where they please.

carlaCox · 31/12/2020 17:41

Also I should say that although I'm not in favour of the honours system I'm grateful to Kathleen for accepting the OBE as, as she said herself, it is symbolic of the massive effort and progress made by women on this issue. No shade from me Prof Stock!

A list of all recipients here assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/948421/New_Year_Honours_List_2021.pdf

Woudn't it be great to see some more nominations from people like KS who really deserve them,

Sexnotgender · 31/12/2020 17:48

I saw that earlier. Excellent news.

Lots of unhappy people on twitter😂

Hopeishere52 · 31/12/2020 17:48

Awesome recognition of great academic work.

nachthexe · 31/12/2020 18:03

I am utterly thrilled. Well done, doc. A small note of recognition for bravery and standing up for principles against tyranny.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 31/12/2020 18:36

Amazing. Excellent news.

EwwSprouts · 31/12/2020 18:43

Well deserved. A prof of integrity.

Beamur · 31/12/2020 18:45

Congratulations to her. Well done.

KittyValentine · 31/12/2020 18:58

Well done Professor Stock! That is excellent news!

Someone sounds jealous. Massive sour grapes there, not a good look.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/12/2020 20:23

Yeah, free speech and women's rights are 'fringe interests' to some, I guess.

HecatesCats · 31/12/2020 20:53

@PandorasMailbox

And just like clockwork....
Every time. Flip it, reverse it.
LukewarmCustard · 31/12/2020 23:49

Congratulations. Well deserved.

ChattyLion · 01/01/2021 07:40

Ooh.. quick! Scrub it from your bios Christine Hunt MBE who was a key figure in Press for Change! Take it out as the key scene from your tv documentary, Captain Hannah Graf MBE (and 2019 Stonewall Trans role model of the year)!
www.stonewall.org.uk/people/trans-role-model-year-2019-captain-hannah-graf
Pulp your biography ‘The First Lady’, April Ashley MBE! (who was discriminated against for lack of same sex marriage which resulted in Corbett v Corbett legal case, which then influenced the UK to bring in the Gender Recognition Act in 2004)..

I think it’s fine for people to accept or refuse political honours as suits their politics (and fine for others to comment according to theirs, so long as critics do not threaten anyone or stop others from speaking out peacefully and within the law).

I take the awarding of this OBE to Prof Stock as a helpful sign that (at least) the freedom of speech aspect of this debate is being thought about by the government. Congratulations again to Prof Stock for the award and congratulations to her for using her Twitter feed very effectively to highlight the institutional-level silencing, personal threatening and harassment on social media and and deplatforming from public and professional debate that’s been happening to multiple other female academics who have also tried to talk about how these issues affect women. quixote9 · 01/01/2021 07:59

Flowers Cake Wine plus every celebration icon we have here!

Wonderful news! So thoroughly deserved, no less for her courage as her great intellectual contributions.

ArabellaScott · 05/01/2021 18:52

Predictably, a bunch of philosophers have written a really thrilling open letter condemning transphobia and Professor Stock's OBE. It's just as vague and bleugh as you'd imagine.

sites.google.com/view/trans-phil-letter/

'Discourse like that Stock is producing and amplifying contributes to these harms, serving to restrict trans people’s access to life-saving medical treatments, encourage the harassment of gender-non-conforming people, and otherwise reinforce the patriarchal status quo' - I'm not clever enough to have a degree, but even I can tell this is utter bollocks. Highly disappointing that these people who are presumably qualified in thinking have signed such a silly letter.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 05/01/2021 18:59

I’d love to actually see a tantrum well thought out argument with facts... just once...

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 05/01/2021 19:03

Interesting list. I keep seeing gender studies type areas popping up. Laugh? I almost did...

ArabellaScott · 05/01/2021 19:14

Totally, ThatIs. Surely there must be somebody who argues this stuff in a clear, logical manner? All those gender-studies departments and doctorologies in woo. Someone has to have a decent argument?

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 05/01/2021 19:17

Because... it’s magic isn’t it? I used to blame JKR for the nonsense belief in magic (and lack of critical thinking) by the young ‘uns who were brought up on Harry Potter.

ArabellaScott · 05/01/2021 20:16

Hm. I suppose plenty of people believe in souls. That is about the only way that I can see this stuff making any kind of internal sense. Gendered souls, sexed bodies. Of course, anyone is free to believe in souls, but I don't think we should base legislation on ideas about the state of anyone's soul.
