Just spotted this in the New Year Honours list:

Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
Professor Kathleen Mary Linn Stock. Professor of Philosophy, University of Sussex. For services to Higher Education. (Lewes, East Sussex)

Excellent to see her getting some positive recognition!

This is interesting. Isn't it relatively unusual for academics to receive honours - unless, say, they're top scientists? I don't know much about it but I find it surprising. "Services to education" - are they thinking of anything in particular? After all, you could argue that every university professor has given services to education, and there must be hundreds of them.

It's great news, of course, and means that people like Stonewall and co will find it harder to paint Professor Stock's views as outside the mainstream or not deserving of respect. But I'm also curious as to how it came about.

Hugest congratulations to Professor Stock - maybe now in conversation with that chair of the GRA select committee (she was so rude and dismissive in her introductions of the gc panel I can’t be bothered to look up her name) - she could say ‘that’s Professor Stock OBE to you madam’.

I read her article on universities - it is absolutely shocking. One thing that struck me is that she mentioned stakeholders (in the corporate/financial sense) apparently putting pressure on the universities to take the line they are taking (anything deviating slightly from the narrow ideology is unacceptable and will be punished. I wonder which companies these stakeholders are.

Congrats to Doctor Stock!

Wokies are going to de-platform the Queen now. Happy newer, OJ & co Grin

Get rid of tuition fees and the notion that students are clients/consumers who need to be pandered to and made to feel they are right/safe/unchallenged.

Doc Stock has reshared her thread on the suppression of critical thought about gender ideology this morning. Well worth a read:

It has to be in recognition of her campaigning against the stifling of free expression in universities.
Anyone could have nominated her, but it's hugely encouraging that the people who make the decisions agreed!

I played her YouTube talk on the ResPublica webinar about liberal feminism to my husband this morning after we saw this news. He agreed that she is an interesting speaker, very clear in her thinking and explanations and he enjoyed her talk. She cuts right through the BS. I’m pleased to hear about her OBE.

This is excellent news. Is it in the public domain who nominated her? If it's the Tories I would say they're making a very clear mark in the sand doing this. She's only been a professor for two or three years, so it's not marking the end of a long career. It therefore looks to me that it's awarded because of the work she's been doing on academic freedoms and freedom of thought/speech. Am I being unduly optimistic?

I really hope not Gasp0de. I felt the same when I saw this.

Here’s an article about how the decisions are made.

www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/18976709.new-years-honours-work-decides/

”This vetting process, to avoid bringing the system into “disrepute”, can involve the input of government departments, regulatory bodies, professional organisations, HM Revenue and Customs and the ACRO Criminal Records Office.”

Sounds like it’s relatively rigorous and it seems unlikely this is accidental.

I searched for 'services to education', 72 hits. I've not looked at them all, some are more specific than that.

Can't quite grasp the thought that someone in a position of power has recognised that campaigning for free speech in universities is a good thing! And a positive contribution to society!

I've been so used to living in the Upside Down that it feels almost baffling.

Is this then an indication that the government thinks that freedom of speech in academia is an important issue? Any chance they will actually do something about it beyond awarding well-deserved honours to Dr Stock? (Congratulations, by the way!) And no, I have no idea what they can do.

This is extremely heartening! Wonderful news, and fills me with optimism for continuing the fight - and hopefully the roll back - in 2021. I would like to see Ann Sinnott get a gong in the 2021 honours...
