Amnesty - “no such thing as a biologically male/female body”

A week ago I saw that Amnesty had responded to a complaint about the open letter signed in Ireland and in that response had said the above.
I wrote to Amnesty as a long time supporter and queried whether this was their official stance, and have today received a reply.
This is an extract - see esp para 3.

“We stand over the letter, which we signed to stand in solidarity with the trans community and against those spreading hate.

There are attempts to decontextualise certain phrases used in the letter in a way that misleads and confuses people, which is a common tactic used against many of our human rights campaigns. For example, the letter asks for media and politicians to not give legitimacy to those spreading vitriol or misinformation. This is being framed as a call to take away their political representation, which anyone reading the letter will clearly see is not what it means.

Another example is the letter’s referring to those ‘defending biology’. Allowing self-determination of our bodies is a basic principle of feminism and human rights. There is no such thing as a ‘biologically female/male body’ - a person’s genitalia doesn’t determine their gender. Those that seek to exclude and disenfranchise groups of people, or force people into one gender or their other on that basis, are working against basic human rights principles.

We feel much of the current media reporting and conversations on social media with regards to self-identification is misguided. Restricting the rights of transgender people, and omitting the use of inclusive language will not advance or protect women’s rights.“

I was hoping that it was a case of an earnest woke teen manning the social media account, but clearly not.
How can they promote such doublespeak? Their last magazine was full of references to women in developing countries - do they REALLY think that there is no such class? “A person’s genitalia does not determine gender” is a separate statement - but they are conflating the two and specifically denying biology.

I am so wearied by this nonsense.

I do love it when someone puts pen to paper and creates something so bonkers that a three year old child could call them out.

Then they say ‘out of context’. Unless the context is ‘some people have come up with this doozy...’

Collidascope · 03/12/2020 15:12

Weirdly, all these tweets seem to undermine their assertion that they don't believe that women have female biology, or indeed that biologically female bodies exist.

I assume there are some people there who are what amnesty was all about - and some newer people who are pushing the whole new agenda along.

OvaHere · 03/12/2020 15:19

Why do I get the feeling that this organisation that doesn't believe in biological sex will also be totally supportive of increasing calls for more surrogacy.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 03/12/2020 15:19

There is no such thing as a ‘biologically female/male body’ - a person’s genitalia doesn’t determine their gender.

They're half right. It doesn't determine gender, which is fanciful nonsense. But it is a useful identifier of sex...

@Collidascope

Weirdly, all these tweets seem to undermine their assertion that they don't believe that women have female biology, or indeed that biologically female bodies exist.
The thing that strikes me is that in those countries where women are subjected to those human rights violations Amnesty like to present themselves as saviours. In Western countries, however, women need to know their place. Hmm
melisande99 · 03/12/2020 15:22

Is it Amnesty International UK or Amnesty International that sent that letter? I think they work according to a federated model, so different "Amnestys" might say different things, though you'd hope they'd be co-ordinated on their ideological stances.

I was going to suggest writing to the trustees of whichever Amnesty it is. I've just had a look at Amnesty International UK's list of trustees and a lot of them do look quite young and potentially "woke" - but not all of them (totally judging by photos and professional bios, no idea what any of them really think). Amnesty International's trustees look more experienced and there are fewer of them. You could write to both sets, as a longtime supporter of the organisation?

Collidascope · 03/12/2020 15:23

Yes, they only like women when they're really, really downtrodden. Once women stop just being the stereotypical victim of violence and start actually wanting a bigger slice of the pie, we need to be slapped down again.

Quite. I keep getting visual images of the Dickens era parish councils like the group of large, fat gentlemen eating huge meals in the workhouse while deciding the futures of the orphans in their care. Or the self righteous wealthy women who used to decide to take children away from poverty stricken or 'feckless' women in their town or village and send them to Canada or Australia. Plus ca change.

Do gooders never nearly as woke as they like to think they are.

OldCrone · 03/12/2020 15:40

There is no such thing as a ‘biologically female/male body’ - a person’s genitalia doesn’t determine their gender.

And yet 'trans' children desperately need access to puberty blockers.

Amnesty and Liberty Joint statement following High Court ruling that children under 16 are unlikely to be able to give informed consent to undergo treatment with puberty-blocking drug

Mollyollydolly · 03/12/2020 15:41

Send it to Piers Morgan, Douglas Murray, and Janice Turner. That is insane.

EyesOpening · 03/12/2020 15:49

Looking at previous emails from Amnesty (as I’m waiting for a reply about that letter, I see this:

“Thank you so much for joining our fight for women’s rights.

Women in the UK and around the world continue to face discrimination and persecution for some of the most ridiculous reasons

As you saw in the quiz - prejudice, ignorance and intolerance not only exist, but are prevalent in our everyday lives.

But together, we can make change happen. When women’s rights are denied, we won’t be silent. We’ll continue to campaign – both at home and globally – to give a voice to those who’ve had theirs taken away.

If you asked to hear from us again, we'll be in touch soon to let you know exactly how we can join forces to fight for women’s rights.“

ridiculous they said it themselves!

Doyoumind · 03/12/2020 15:50

How do they explain the persistence of human life if there is no such thing as biological sex? It's such nonsense. Fine, if they want to believe there are eleventy billion genders but how can they pretend that sexual reproduction, which populates the planet with a hell of a lot of living things, doesn't exist?

HecatesCats · 03/12/2020 15:52

There is no such thing as a ‘biologically female/male body’

How is it then Amnesty, with your remit to protect the human rights of people across the globe, that in countries like China and India men now out number women by tens of millions? Countries where sex selective abortions and female infanticide are widespread. Projections suggest this is likely to get worse as technology advances. How do they know which sex to abort? How is your stance going to help? You're asleep on the job.

EyesOpening · 03/12/2020 15:53

Will eleventy billion genders, it’s amazing that so many people managed to couple up with someone who matched up to make a pair who could make a baby between them, what are the odds?

Scout2016 · 03/12/2020 15:56

Their response has reminded me of this individual, who thought it was so great that doctors took them for male that they nearly died. And selfishly wasted the efforts, time and resources of medics. Because to interpret test results you need to know the actual sex of the patient, not what the preferred one.

www.bbc.com/future/article/20200814-why-our-medical-systems-are-ignoring-transgender-people

Impatiens · 03/12/2020 15:56

Something very rotten going on inside Amnesty - I agree with those who've suggested sending that letter to the Times, they've got the means to find out exactly who's responsible for this garbage.

HecatesCats · 03/12/2020 15:57

Amnesty know which infants are more likely to be killed because of sex preferences in numerous countries. Amnesty know which sex is more likely to be raped in war zones. Amnesty know which sex is most likely to be trafficked for the sex trade. WhenAmnesty say there's no such thing as biological sex they are lying.

terryleather · 03/12/2020 15:59

One for the Baroness I'd have thought.

Yet another bunch of liberal narcissists hell bent on passing off an ideological, reality-denying position as the correct way for the good and kind and righteous.

I can't express in words how much I despise them.

But their house is built on sand and it will crumble, it's just a matter of time...

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 03/12/2020 16:01

I’d love to see them try to explain this to women in India or South America whose daughters have been murdered at birth, or kidnapped, raped and murdered as young women - because they are female.

RoyalCorgi · 03/12/2020 16:03

This from Glosswitch's newsletter today:

"According to the UNFPA’s 2020 State of World Populations report, 140 million females are considered missing today. In India, one in nine females below the age of five dies due to “postnatal sex selection”. It’s unfathomable and yet also strangely mundane. You might not have been told the exact number, but you kind of knew it anyway. Millions of girls are being murdered simply for being female, yet there is no sense of constant outrage. Indeed, here in countries where the balance is more equitable, we’re too busy trying to argue female people don’t even exist."

How on earth can Amnesty come out with this shit without being possessed of a deep sense of shame?

HecatesCats · 03/12/2020 16:07

They are shameless in their disregard for women. They've been this way for some time. The prostitution is a 'human right' propaganda started back in 2015, maybe earlier: www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2015/jul/28/amnesty-international-prostitution-sex-work-human-trafficking

HecatesCats · 03/12/2020 16:08

Millions of girls are being murdered simply for being female, yet there is no sense of constant outrage.

It's so depressing Corgi

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 03/12/2020 16:09

Amnesty have completely lost the plot, seems to be run by fully fledged misogynists. Have a look at Iseult White on Twitter - grand daughter of Amnesty's founder, even she is standing up against them.

niceberg · 03/12/2020 16:09

I stopped donating to them when the scandal of their bullying management culture emerged. They will not be seeing a penny from me again.
