Claiming extreme risk of harm if sudden withdrawal of treatment

But treatment is safe and fully reversible right?

Would need to check protocols but these need not be exclusive given the use of the word 'sudden'. It's possible the safe and reversible might relate to reduced dosage or use of other medication. There are plenty of treatments for other conditions where the treatment is safe and reversible but sudden cessation of mediation gives rise to a risk of harm.

Gender reassignment: NHS loses puberty blockers legal case

PenguindreamsofDraco · 01/12/2020 11:09

This is just one of those days I really miss Baby Shipman on twitter. Oh it would have been glorious

persistentwoman · 01/12/2020 11:09

Long overdue that children were centred in all this rather than the narcissistic demands of adult activists. Well done Keira, Mrs A, Transgender Trend and everyone else who supported this. Flowers

RoyalCorgi · 01/12/2020 11:10

I wonder how many charities mentioned by mermaids will now be distancing themselves?

Same here. In fact, I think the reason Mermaids mentioned them was to take them down with them. Expect to see some very rapid reverse-ferreting and tweet-deleting and general gaslighting ("we never said children should have puberty blockers") from NSPCC et al.

fastwigglylines · 01/12/2020 11:11

Heather Brunskell Evans says:

16 year olds & over can presume to consent. Under 16 year olds presumed not to be able to consent although slightly sliding scale from 16 downwards under exceptional circumstance. It’s a complex judgement Tavi want to appeal. Will tweet more later when I’ve absorbed the detail

PearPickingPorky · 01/12/2020 11:12

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

Judgement excerpt:
So are they saying under 16s can't consent, over 16s might be able to but each case needs referred to Court?
CaveMum · 01/12/2020 11:12

Fabulous news!

They’re coming for you Mermaids! So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/12/2020 11:12

It is interesting that all the media reporting seems to be framing it as u16s can have puberty blockers if they understand enough to consent, whereas judgement says highly unlikely to understand.

Actually stunning and brave. Brilliant news.

PearPickingPorky · 01/12/2020 11:13

In fact, I think the reason Mermaids mentioned them was to take them down with them.

Wow.

Yes, probably.

Oh well, down they go then. They stopped putting children first long ago.

Clymene · 01/12/2020 11:15

YouNoob - that headline totally contradicts the first line of the article: "Children under 16 who wish to undergo gender reassignment can only consent to having puberty blockers if they are able to understand the nature of the treatment, the High Court has said in a landmark ruling."

cantdothisnow1 · 01/12/2020 11:15

Fantastic news, hopefully the beginning of the end for the affirmation model, Mermaids and the Tavi.

littlbrowndog · 01/12/2020 11:15

Tavistock has proposed a pause in referrals

Winesalot · 01/12/2020 11:16

YouNoob

That is an interesting article by Huff. A very interesting take......

PenguindreamsofDraco · 01/12/2020 11:17

Half an hour ago the ticker feed on the Microsoft home page was that 'children can't consent...'.

Now it says 'Children under 16 can consent if they understand the treatment.'

It is definitely being spun as a victory.

sultanasofa · 01/12/2020 11:17

This is fantastic news. The language in the judgement excerpt is clear and sensible. I'm happy.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/12/2020 11:17

BREAKING: High Court ruling deals a potentially devastating blow to trans under 16s seeking access to life-saving puberty blockers. We will respond in full and expect an appeal from GIDS. This is a betrayal of trans young people.

ChattyLion · 01/12/2020 11:18

So relieved although I want more details. Please let this be the start of change.

OhHolyJesus · 01/12/2020 11:18

Mermaids tweeted

BREAKING: High Court ruling deals a potentially devastating blow to trans under 16s seeking access to life-saving puberty blockers. We will respond in full and expect an appeal from GIDS. This is a betrayal of trans young people. The summary judgment in full:

justanotherneighinparadise · 01/12/2020 11:18

This reminds me of a car accident I had where both sides claimed to have won yet interestingly I was the one who walked out of court with it having cost me zero and the other side lost his costs, his ability to claim for personal injury and his no claims.

Sheheshehe · 01/12/2020 11:18

Absolutely astonished and delighted! Hats off to Keira and her excellent team for presenting the case so brilliantly. All we wanted was for someone to look at this process and see it for what it was. Am so fucking relieved that puberty blockers will be seen for what they are: experimental and gateway drugs with irreversible and unknown effects.

MammothMashup · 01/12/2020 11:18

@cantdothisnow1

Fantastic news, hopefully the beginning of the end for the affirmation model, Mermaids and the Tavi.

And quite frankly the end of this by some teachers, groups that work in schools and the few parents who push for blockers for gd. And the bbc.
