Perhaps we can quit with the 'dark money' narrative now.

I was a little surprised to see a grant from Lush Charity Pot in there. Perhaps as a company they aren't a total write off after all.

xxyzz agreed re professionalism. This thread has made me realise how efficiently utilised any money I donate to WPUK is. As soon as they need more money I’ll be sure to donate. The one WPUK event I went to was very informative only slightly marred by the large men protesting and being disruptive outside. Being inside in the warm with excellent company and them being outside in the cold and wet helped offset the effect of the disruption Grin

Nice work WPUK. Honesty and transparency.

Good news about Lush, though I am not fully convinced, they are selling Trans flag soap, and then all the shop window sign shenanigans and the gender pay gap headlines. I emailed Lush PR department to say I am watching with interest and would really like to resume buying from them as I will miss my orchid cleanser when it runs out. They don't need to support women's groups, they just need to remain unbiased and not take sides.

I also use bath bombs, henna blocks, ultrabland, lust perfume, vanilla perfume, tea tree cleanser and buy stocking fillers from there, so I hope they are going to stay neutral in future or I'm gone for good.
I have found a marvellous long term substitute for all my proctor and gamble products since the tampax debacle so I expect I can find good alternatives to my Lush favorites too.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 29/11/2020 20:04

I actively want WPUK to pay their speakers. Why? Because we have fecking hundreds of years of recent history where women's voices have not been valued. We have been silenced and not listened to when we do try to speak up. We've had to publish our opinions under male names or using that wretched term 'anon.' We've been told our opinion counts for nothing because quite literally just because of our biology.

So if women in 2020 should be paid for their expertise. It's a sign of being valued and respected. It is appropriate given gc women will lose other sources of income and opportunities, too. I would be really disappointed if they weren't paid, to be honest. Women get exploited all over the shop in terms of having to give free labour.

pombear · 29/11/2020 20:33

I've gone to quite a few WPUK meetings and, because I'm lucky enough to be financially OK, i've bought the ticket option that helps others out too (dark money, mine is!).

I'm very happy for available funds went to both speakers and those arranging the events, security etc.

Too many unpaid woman-hours are already being expended, including mine elsewhere, to defend existing rights and (to borrow the language of gender ideology extremists) defending our right to exist as a recognised sex-based defined class of humans.

And given the trend elsewhere on social media for gender ideology extremists to demand payment for the 'emotional labour' of even thinking about stuff, I don't see why women shouldn't get recompensed for thinking and speaking!

don't think they are trying to evade taxes. I think they are trying to evade accountability by not having named directors/trustees

Bit like the people behind the BLM UK Crowdfunder then. They have well over £1 million. I hope JJ will be asking who they are and what they are doing with the money.

They've closed the crowdfunder and are setting up a formal organisation with the money I think.

They weren't trading though so it's different from a legal point of view.

Deltoids1 · 29/11/2020 21:50

FFS. WPUK aren’t trading, they’re carrying out activities for the benefit of their membership. Selling tickets to their talks is akin to a football club selling tickets to an annual dinner.
JJ, you really have no idea how this sector operates. It’s getting embarrassing now.

Tickets aren't just sold to members though, they are sold to the public. Hard to see how that isn't trading.
Deltoids1 · 29/11/2020 22:06

So are tickets at the football dinner!
Or a half time raffle.

My partners cycling club holds monthly talks, sometimes with paid speakers. It’s £5 a ticket and you get pie and peas supper. Don’t have to be a member to attend. And guess what? They’re not trading either.

persistentwoman · 29/11/2020 22:11

Good to keep this thread bumped. WPUK have been fantastic advocates for women and hopefully this will encourage more women to sign up and even fund them.
Let's keep it going.. Smile

334bu · 29/11/2020 22:12

jj as they say up here " gaunae naw" We get it. You don't like women, especially upstart ones who dare to speak up for themselves. Well sorry to inform you , WOMEN exist and we are VALID and WE WILL BE HEARD .

GCAcademic · 29/11/2020 22:14

Gosh, our monthly village cinema club must be trading by that definition.

Should I tip off HMRC next time they take £3.50 off me?

Yes lots of small associations do things like that, and the law on what constitutes trading is quite complicated but I don't think HMRC care much when its a few hundred quid. £50k a year turnover and a £40k surplus is a bit different though.

Here's a fascinating account of how WPUK developed - their first meeting was in response to Linda Bellos being un invited by a student society. It's a great example of how women's groups have sprung up all over the place in the last few years - a real emergence of a vibrant community of women fighting male oppression:

334bu · 29/11/2020 22:20

Bad women !!!!!!!!!!

MoonPomme · 29/11/2020 22:38

Why dont you call hmrc in the morning then jj?

jj1968 · 29/11/2020 22:44

I don't really care that much, just find it interesting that they don't seem to care that much either.

StillAFeminist · 29/11/2020 22:45

JJ1968 Where do you get the figure of £50k turnover a year from?

Note You have already been reminded those accounts cover the period from Jan ‘18 to Oct ‘20 and its very clearly stated on the accounts as well.

We’re wasting our time here if you’re just going to make stuff up and keep repeating it.

persistentwoman · 29/11/2020 22:47

WPUK have also published a 'Mythbusters' section about themselves. Again interesting reading

Total income £127,434.42 over 2 years ten months, so yes fair enough its closer to £45k a year, although given they havent held any meetings this year presumably most of that came in over the first two years.
PlonitbatPlonit · 29/11/2020 22:59

The outrage on twitter about the (relatively tiny) Lush grant is something to behold!

persistentwoman · 29/11/2020 23:02

They've also published a chilling account of the silencing of women in the labour party. They really are putting their funds to good use. So glad so many women support them from our hard earned incomes Smile

🤐 Women's role in life according to jj.

StillAFeminist · 29/11/2020 23:08

Sigh.

jj1968 Turnover and Income are different things

Please tell me you dont work in finance Shock

MoonPomme · 29/11/2020 23:08

I was wondering when the shit was gonna hit the fan for lush.
Have they issued a grovelling apology yet?
