Perhaps we can quit with the 'dark money' narrative now.

I was a little surprised to see a grant from Lush Charity Pot in there. Perhaps as a company they aren't a total write off after all.

@Kazzyhoward

The lack of clarification over formal structure is pretty worrying. To comply with HMRC, company law and/or charity commissioner rules, it MUST have some kind of formal legal structure. Those "accounts" aren't really accounts at all - even the smallest/simplest of registered charities need to present accounts in a formal format. Nor is there any sign of a formal audit or independent review of the accounts (which may be required dependant upon legal structure). It all looks to be an amateur bodge job.

jj, is that you?

@jj1968

I don't really care that much, just find it interesting that they don't seem to care that much either.
Blimey, for someone who doesn’t care that much you seem very invested (sorry if the word upsets you, it’s only a turn of phrase, I know no money has changed hands) in stringing this out. Why don’t you bow out gracefully while you still have a modicum of dignity left.

Alternatively you could try contacting the White House and asking if Melania still has the infamous jacket and if she will sell it to you, at a fairly traded price of course.

@Deltoids1

Lolz Kazzy If you take the time to read the thread there is plenty of posters carefully explaining the situation.
No, they're really not.

Is it a limited company?
Is it a registered charity?
Is it a formal "club or society"?
Is it a partnership?
Is it a limited liability partnership?

There are vague comments about it's format, but I've not seen a single post saying exactly what it's legal format is.

fyi a friend of mine wasn't paid for some work by a photographer so she phoned up Customs and Exercise and dobbed him in it- within HOURS they were round removing files. So JJ honestly JUST PICK UP THE PHONE ! Our civil servants do their jobs.

BettyDuKeiraBellisMyShero · 02/12/2020 14:01

Why don’t you contact WPUK and ask?

StillAHarpie · 02/12/2020 14:04

Kazzyhoward there is a full explanation in the thread from various poster but briefly

WPUK is not a charity, they dont get the tax benefits of being a charity and they dont have the (onerous) reporting rules of a charity

There are perfectly legal (and government/Hmrc approved) mechanisms for social enterprises. Many Many women get involved in all sorts of social enterprises from setting up different childcare structures to support groups. So many posters here are familiar with how they get set up and run and there is nothing about how WPUK is running that looks untoward.

Social enterprises aren’t required to have and publish fully audited accounts, and in some cases are discouraged from doing so as it would take too much of the money collected to perform the purpose of the social enterprise. If the numbers of people involved in the organisation are small it isn’t always helpful to set up for formal structure. As the enterprise grows more formality gets added. If it becomes an charity or a company it gets various advantages and alongside those it gets more obligations.

WPUK is a campaigning group that organises meetings. It doesnt own anything, it doesnt have formal membership, it doesnt need audited accounts or a formal structure.

OK that was less brief than I’d intended Blush

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/12/2020 14:15

Sorry Kazzy. Should I spend a few hours explaining what community/ social enterprises are? I started one last year, spent months researching the varying legalities of various set ups, including CiC. We ended up exactly as WPUK did.

Legal, supported by HMRC exactly as we are and providing workshops and support for hundreds of people.

There is NOTHING wrong with how they are set up. NOTHING!

More focus on the brilliant work that WPUK do with their money (this time in the Cherwell) donotlink.it/29Jb7G

Ah yes, the Women’s Lib conference!

That was a wild weekend on this board, IIRC. Not sure why it’s now being treated as if it were some kind of crazy backhanded funding revelation Grin

From the Gov U.K. website

An ‘unincorporated association’ is an organisation set up through an agreement between a group of people who come together for a reason other than to make a profit (for example, a voluntary group or a sports club).
You don’t need to register an unincorporated association, and it doesn’t cost anything to set one up.

Individual members are personally responsible for any debts and contractual obligations.

Hope this helps.
