Planned Parenthood jumps the shark
57

HecatesCats · 20/11/2020 14:07

Planned Parenthood have posted:

Part of observing #TransAwarnessWeek is acknowledging that the use of woman-centric language in reproductive & abortion advocacy is erasure of trans health care.

^Not all women can get pregnant, and women aren't the only people who get pregnant.

Not all women menstruate, and women aren't the only people who menstruate.

Cisgender women aren't the only people who get abortions.^

I do hope someone asks what proportion of their national audience for these services is trans, what proportion don't have English as a first language and if neurodiversity plays any part in their thinking. For the sake of inclusivity. How many women are they in fact excluding with this shift in language?

Americans like to ask why the UK is a hotbed of GC feminism. But why are Americans so intent on robbing women of their rights? The right to name themselves, to single sex spaces, to single sex sports and so on. What went wrong over there?

"Americans" are also intent on overturning Roe v Wade so abortion will only be available on a state-by-state basis. There are many more Americans who are dangerous to women on the Christian right than the woke left. Whatever went wrong over there is no small thing. The US is a much more violent society than anywhere in Europe, and their politics just doesn't compare. I'm not surprised that liberals of all genital configurations are clinging to one another for support - however misguidedly, and however much their interests actually diverge. (I have very little handle on Latinos and Latinas voting for Trump, but that's clearly a whole other thing.)

I love the US, but this one is going to have to be on us to unpick. They're too busy with abortion and maternity and employment rights to deal.

I was being somewhat provocative in my use of "Americans", I was obsessed with US culture growing up, I'm genuinely interested and really disappointed Leaf. It does seem to be a big old mess that we're getting dragged into.

Woman-centric language is just so 1970s now.

Deeply problematic

I look back on the times when people used the word 'woman' when they were talking about birthing bodies and menstruators and absolutely cringe.

Yeah, much bigger than I thought it would be when this first came on my radar Hecates. I used to live out there and when transwomen starting playing my sport I thought it would all come out in the wash eventually. No such luck.

Indeed.

Do planned parenthood get funding or get paid for dishing out the synthetic hormones? I know that's one place a trans person can go to get them so I wonder if there is a financial incentive to be on board the trans train?

It's as if Planned Parenthood have copied and pasted this dross directly from an email from some lobbying body.

I got deleted! I mostly wanted to point out that it was a local PP and not the national one.

Sorry Kit19 but they are not talking about women like you. They are talking about the women who used to be men.
How dare you weaponize your biology in a matter that doesn't even concern you.

In the real world however 💐

Hecates I think it's more of a federation, but right general idea. I certainly don't actually think they are MAssholes - which is what I got deleted for. I was just enjoying the pun, really.

And they're not morons or idiots. They're doing a difficult and a dangerous job in a country not naturally given to regarding women's reproductive rights as important. They did say something... stupid, maybe? But I think I'd go with misguided, in the absence of other evidence. As I said upthread, they're not operating in a political culture that we would recognise. It's going to be on Europeans to sort this one out because they're too busy with other stuff.

It's insulting to women is what it is and not remotely inclusive to other groups for whom straightforward language is much more helpful. I'm keen to understand how it got to the point where sweeping changes to language are being made to support what must be a tiny minority of users.

It was Planned Parenthood that initially set me off in the foothills of the peak, with a tweet talking about "pregnant people" in about 2016. I had always been a bit dubious about Liberal feminism but that was the first thing outside feminist circles that made me do a face.

The response of most people who haven't been soaked in all this is going to be "nonsense" on reading that list.

Only adult human females have the biology to get pregnant. No one in the history of the human race has ever been pregnant that was not a female.

Only adult human females have the biology to menstruate. No one in the history of the human race has ever menstruated that was not a female.

There is no such thing as a 'cisgender woman', stop misgendering people.

Only human females require abortions, because only human females can get pregnant.

That some human females choose not to call themselves women does nothing whatsoever to change these facts. It is perfectly possible to be inclusive of females who would prefer to be termed as NB or TM without implying that biological reality and facts have magically ceased to exist. It does nothing to support the desired outcome of improving life for minorities, it just makes people switch off.

And note too the statement, so often now brazenly stated, that woman-centric anything is trans-erasing.

Ergo, being trans supportive requires active woman erasure.

Let's reflect for a moment on whether using language that creates exclusion and anger in 52% of the population regarding less than 1% of the population is really a positive, kind or even sensible thing if you truly care about the best interests and successful inclusion of that less than 1%?

When are we going to have an Adult Female Human Week when everyone will bend over backwards to say positive things about women and moreover say them using proper words not made up wokespeech?

Michelle I thought that too. "The use of woman-centric language... is erasure of trans..." Right there in a tweet. The use of woman-centric language is woman-centric. As, in fact, conversations about fertility and abortion should be. Sigh...

A lovely late friend of my DM used to volunteer as a counsellor at one of the Massachusetts PPs. She would have been appalled!

????????????

Oh wait, I finally get it — this is the token nod to transmen, who would be ignored by the trans lobby if they didn’t provide an excuse to erase women from female things like pregnancy.

No, I don't think that's the main drive behind this. No female born group have this sort of power or elicit this kind of enthusiastic support.
