J.K. Rowling is to guest on Graham Norton’s Radio 2 show, to talk about her new book The Ickabog, a new fairy tale about a mythical monster, a kingdom in peril and an adventure that will test two children’s bravery.

The author will join Graham on this Saturday morning show from 10am on 14 November, 2020.

Also on the programme...

Lastly, Graham talks to the writers of SIX The Musical, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, which is scheduled to reopen in the West End with a series of socially distanced performances at The Lyric Theatre soon.

what is wrong with these people?

Wow, that Katherine Howard song starts "ever since I was a child I'd make the boys go wild" and doesn't improve. How do songs like this make it onto the stage? Really, there are soooooo many people involved in these productions, they are rehearsed. Doesn't anyone, in all that time, say "guys these lyrics...I'm not sure... are they edgy, or maybe just really iffy?"

I love that nursie sketch!

I have never read or bought JKR but am getting so cross I'm thinking if Ikabog might be the first purchase... is it actually any good? Am I right in thinking it's age 7 ish up, or would 5 years if read to them be ok?

BingBongSong · 15/11/2020 09:42

To be fair, it’s performed very much in the context of someone who has been abused.

Yes, when it's performed it makes your skin crawl because you can understand that she was abused by these men.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/11/2020 09:46

Although calls of ‘who?’ are probably fair enough in the R2 listening figures scheme of things in this case, I always find it a bit of a disingenuous argument on here. SIX is a highly acclaimed and well known show

Ive literally never heard of them or the musical, so my ‘who ?’ (should i chose to use it) wouldn’t be disingenuous

Ive only got as far as this post so apologies if its moved on

BingBongSong · 15/11/2020 09:49

Here's a lockdown performance of the opening song. You'll be able to spot Toby Marlow on it.

@Ereshkigalangcleg

If there's anything that the story of Henry VIII and his wives can tell us, it's about male power and biological sex roles. Idiots.
Is that what its about?

I’d probably watch that...is it catchy?

Yeah I've never heard of the musical until today I guess
DrDavidBanner · 15/11/2020 09:52

Thank you for pointing this out to me, I missed it yesterday but just found to podcast to listen to later. I like Graham Norton he's such a good interviewer.

Its a shame that the creators of Six made that decision, I took my mum to see it for christmas last year and we both thought it was great fun. Ironically the theme was how patriarcy destroyed these women's lives and how their characters were twisted to fit in with a misogynistic narrative.

If refunds aren’t available, you could always go anyway, but write to them explaining that you feel conflicted supporting their work seeing as they promote unnecessary medicalisation of children, so you have donated the same amount to Transgender Trend to make up for it

Nice😀

People should deffo do that

Ive had a flick through the copy i bought and its a bit like a book of fairy tales...so deffo fine to be read out

(Dd was ill in march and wanted us to read grims fairy tales (dad had to act it) and i on one story i got as far as the dad wanting to marry the daughter and had to stop...shes 18 but still!)

BingBongSong · 15/11/2020 09:57

Rufus, extremely catchy, unfortunately! And refreshing to see a musical with only women on the stage!

Loads of stuff on YouTube.

Callcat · 15/11/2020 10:00

Playground twats. 'siiiir I'm not sitting by JK!!!'. Bore off then ya bunch of wokester unknowns. Asking for Mermaids donations just shows that they haven't really a clue about any of it.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/11/2020 10:00

Thanks bingbong

JonasKahnwald · 15/11/2020 10:14

Well I've just bought the ikabog off the back of this thread so probably not the outcome those two wokesters were hoping for 🤷‍♀️

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/11/2020 10:20

I think the female writer and at least one of the main actors/singers playing the role identify as non binary. Eye roll. Gender is the key. Why didn't Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard just identify as men?

midgebabe · 15/11/2020 10:21

Isn't refusing to sit next to someone a form of bullying ?

Well exactly @Ereshkigalangcleg what silly women not to think of that! That would have saved them a whole lot of bother 🤦‍♀️
Beamur · 15/11/2020 10:29

“I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too.”
Elizabeth I. I think she knew sex mattered. Although I am sure some kids would now look at that quote and say she was NB or trans from that statement.
How ironic that the authors of a musical about such a key part of English history that is completely and inextricably bound up with sex are gender ideologists.
Sigh.

Needmoresleep · 15/11/2020 10:31

Is the problem that creative people seem to take themselves so seriously, confusing media attention around the 'product' they involved in selling, with interest in the individual themselves and their personal opinions.

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson.....the list is pretty long.

JKR is also a creator. A very impressive one. She too offers her personal views. But these are not acceptable. Ageist? sexist? I dunno, but I am pleased Graham Norton is old enough and wise enough not to jump on the woke bandwagon.

BingBongSong · 15/11/2020 10:31

I've just gone and bought The Ickabog too. My dc are a bit old for it, so it's for me Grin.

HecatesCats · 15/11/2020 10:33

Why didn't Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard just identify as men?

I cannot get over the irony of writing about six women who were literally traded as chattel, whose primary purpose was to grow and birth a male heir (one dying in the process) and some of whom have been subject to all sorts of misogynistic slander ever since (Anne B was a witch, naturally), and not SEEING this really clearly.

Deltoids1 · 15/11/2020 10:35

Yesterday I was meant to be going for a run and I sat in the car waiting for the rain to stop. JKR was on with GN. Every time I hear her speak live, she comes across as so warm and genuine. Her passion for the Ickabog and the amazing illustrations from children across the world was obvious.
Just imagine what her sales figures look like after yesterday’s broadcast. I’m off to buy it for my nieces and nephews for Christmas.

The SIX people could have shared that platform to their advantage. More fool them for not doing so.

ArabellaScott · 15/11/2020 10:35

Well, that's a clever way to reach a far wider audience than had ever heard of them previously.

And yes, well done Graham Norton.

SunsetBeetch · 15/11/2020 11:24

Nope, I had genuinely never heard of them or their musical.

Oh dear, it gets worse. From Glinner's site: they have recommended a book by this person:

BraveBananaBadge · 15/11/2020 11:24

I understand most people won’t have heard of people like these (I hadn’t tbh although I was aware of the musical), or Fox Fisher and the like. I get what you mean Rufus and Codename, but I’m not sure dismissing them just because they’re nonentities small beans compared to JKR or Radio 2 or a massive publishing house is the way to go.

Their idiotic, over-simplistic single-minded actions speak for themselves, and at least I know to swerve them all in future! Not to ‘cancel’ but just to vote with my feet.

Good on Graham Norton for having the sense to realise this whole furore does not and should not define JKR. Don’t know if they touched on it in the interview, but hopefully it was conditionally off limits, as anything she said would have been pounced on and twisted.

Looking forward to giving DS1 his copy of the Ikabog for his birthday.
