J.K. Rowling is to guest on Graham Norton’s Radio 2 show, to talk about her new book The Ickabog, a new fairy tale about a mythical monster, a kingdom in peril and an adventure that will test two children’s bravery.

The author will join Graham on this Saturday morning show from 10am on 14 November, 2020.

Also on the programme...

Lastly, Graham talks to the writers of SIX The Musical, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, which is scheduled to reopen in the West End with a series of socially distanced performances at The Lyric Theatre soon.

what is wrong with these people?

May their socially distanced production get an extremely socially distanced audience.

Aside from shows at our local theatre, I was going to purchase LOTS of tickets to this West End production as part of an upcoming celebration.
I most certainly won't now!

SO disappointing, and disappointed.

But - Get Woke. Go Broke.

1986 version:

Nursie: Out you popped and everyone’s shouting: “It’s a boy, it’s a boy!” And somebody said: “But it hasn’t got a winkle!” And I said: “God be praised, it’s a miracle. A boy without a winkle!” And then Sir Thomas More pointed out that a boy without a winkle is a girl. Everyone was really disappointed.

2020 version:

Nursie: Out you popped and everyone’s shouting: “It’s a boy, it’s a boy!” And somebody said: “But it hasn’t got a winkle!” And I said: “God be praised, it’s a miracle. A boy without a winkle!” And then Sir Thomas More pointed out that a boy without a winkle is a girl. Everyone called Sir Thomas More a transphobic bigot and he had his head chopped off and his remains were burned in a grease fire. And you were the future King! And your mum Anne Boleyn lived a long and happy life and kept her head, your dad only married twice overall, and in a few centuries time I expect a couple of village idiots will write a musical play all about it and call it “Two”.

AbsintheFriends · 15/11/2020 08:18

I've only heard of them and their musical because they were interviewed on Radio 4 (PM maybe?) They sounded like the comedy 'Okay yah' Oxbridge stereotype - terribly posh, every other word was 'like', very young and not very media savvy or professional. They said they were very surprised by the success of the musical.

I guess they'll now retreat into a corner of righteous obscurity alongside the authors who left JK's literary agency in a huff (I can't remember their names either) and all those who choose to sacrifice prime time radio promotion opps for woke cookies from people who make up an insignificant proportion of their target market.

NotBad 😂😂

Here are the misogynistic lyrics these two wrote about 13 year old Katherine Howard and her "relationship" with her music teacher.
Ew I only listened to a minute of that but it's vile! Absolutely disgusting
PurpleHoodie · 15/11/2020 08:26

Ah.

Judith

Paedophilia is sooooo sexxayyy.

(And to think I was going to take a large bunch of teens to this "jazz hands" shitshow)

Vinosaurus · 15/11/2020 08:28

Bloody hell - they're trivialising a 13 yr old having a sexual relationship with their 23 yr old teacher? Well ... that's a good look.

Cwenthryth · 15/11/2020 08:32

@Comefromaway

I have tickets to Six in December.

Considering asking for a refund.

If refunds aren’t available, you could always go anyway, but write to them explaining that you feel conflicted supporting their work seeing as they promote unnecessary medicalisation of children, so you have donated the same amount to Transgender Trend to make up for it.
ValancyRedfern · 15/11/2020 08:33

notbadconsidering that very episode was on the BBC last night! I thought how it would never be written now.

Deliriumoftheendless · 15/11/2020 08:37

@PotholeParadies

Intriguing.

Did they really think they were in danger of being cancelled by their social circle for being on the same episode of Graham Norton? Has cancellation fervour got that bad?

Or did they think that taking this stance and the resulting twitter approval would increase ticket sales more than going on Graham Norton's show?

I suspect there’s something in this.
ValancyRedfern · 15/11/2020 08:53

"

Yes I suspect they did. I expect they haven't met a single person in the flesh who wouldn't tow the line that JKR is transphobic, and if they saw anything suggesting otherwise they would dismiss it as transphobia propaganda. Similarly, they won't have heard a single negative thing about Mermaids, or if they have, again it will have been dismissed as transphobic. I know some people who move in similar circles to them. I doubt the idea that this might lose them ticket sales simply won't have occurred to them, or if it did, they'd believe it was a price worth paying.

BingBongSong · 15/11/2020 08:55

What a shame, although not surprised, having seen the writers interviewed before.

I've been to see Six twice, my dd loves it. We also have tickets to see it in January. I said to dd at the time how unusual it was to have a show which had an all-female cast (including the band). I like the songs.

Will still go, if the show is on, but will have a chat with dd (who also loves JK Rowling) about this stance that the writers have taken re. refusing to appear alongside JK Rowling. She's pretty sensible (and cynical) and will probably draw the same conclusions as I do.

PotholeParadies · 15/11/2020 09:04

It's proving a popular stance on twitter. I don't know whether that translates to increased ticket sales, but in their list of approved children's books is one I bought last week because it was on offer in a high street bookshop.

What the hell have I bought? Is this a book that is simply by a trans author (that's not a problem) or something with dubious content? Child hasn't read it yet, so I'd better get on it first.

Kit19 · 15/11/2020 09:14

I’ve no doubt the twitterati approve

Six is very successful - all my friends daughters have been to see it

Shame they personally are woke idiots but I take that as par for the course these days with young playwrights

SunsetBeetch · 15/11/2020 09:16

@BaronessWrongCrowd

Imagine being that far up your own arse that you think that people, the majority of whom have never heard of your or or musical, would care about what you think. Hmm
Yes I wonder what will garner more interest in their production: a 'protest' that people on twitter will hear about, or an appearance on BBC Radio? Hmm

Which one is it?
FloralBunting · 15/11/2020 09:22

Ok, that Katherine Howard song is nasty.

Always with the really malleable ethical boundaries, these bright shining culture warriors...

YellowHighlighterPen · 15/11/2020 09:22

I know I'm cynical but they're getting plenty of publicity off the back of their decision and I expect they factored that in.

PotholeParadies · 15/11/2020 09:24

The StrangeWorlds Travel Agency. From the flick through at the time, I thought it was standard children's portal fantasy.

PuzzleRocks · 15/11/2020 09:24

Interesting. I had planned to see Six but I will save my pennies. Can't stand wokescolds.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/11/2020 09:25

To most people I think it just looks like the attention seeking it is.
To be fair, it’s performed very much in the context of someone who has been abused.
