www.theguardian.com/books/2020/nov/10/mary-wollstonecraft-finally-honoured-with-statue-after-200-years

It's a naked woman..

Currently reading A Vindication of the Rights of Woman for an OU course, and - unless the tone changes dramatically in the second half of it - I'm not seeing how an idealised nude is the right statue to convey anything about her?

Love the poncho! Brilliant!

blindinglyobviouslight · 14/11/2020 17:28

Not read whole thread, so sorry if the point has already been made, but City of Edinburgh Council has a sculpture representing Everyman outside of their HQ and that manages to have him sculptured with clothes on.

(Though was massively pissed that the council went for the whole men being the default human with that statue, but still makes the point man that Everyman = clothes on. Everywoman - butt naked.')

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/11/2020 17:30

That's adorable!

A bit of political adjutation is the best reason for a spot of knitting!

Maireas · 14/11/2020 17:48

Absolutely!! I'm currently feeling lonesome on a thread on aibu where people think "woman" is rude and should always use "lady".....

fatblackcatspaw · 14/11/2020 17:49

what ! I do venture into the rest of mumsnet and get vicarious pleasure about hearing about MIL troubles... but that sounds bonkers

Maireas · 14/11/2020 17:51

Oh do join me. Apparently, "woman" is rude. An offensive term to many. One should only ever say "that lady over there" or "pay the lady".

Abitofalark · 14/11/2020 18:16

That's beautiful work, fatblackcatspaw. I'm completely in awe and admiration.

Deadringer · 14/11/2020 18:23

@MedusasBadHairDay

I prefer the other version too, I agree with the campaign that we need more status of prominent women. But that's not a statue of Wollstonecraft, just a generic nude female, and those are already over represented.
I agree, its generic and says nothing about her. I think it's shit actually, like a nude plastic bride on top of a melted wedding cake.
Maireas · 14/11/2020 18:49

Deadringer very good point!

NoCureForLove · 14/11/2020 18:56

@Maireas You weren't alone! I was there on the lady is polite / woman is rude thread. Quite the eye-opener in a truly depressing way...

NoCureForLove · 14/11/2020 18:57

Loving Mary's much needed outfits!

Maireas · 14/11/2020 18:59

Dear lord, NoCureForLove, sooo depressing. Young people as well. Sorry, young "ladies"! It grinds my gears that people think "woman" is an impolite or even offensive term! We're doomed.

I was searching for a photo of the statue of Alice Nutter (one of the 'Pendle Witches') and found her on a site which may have some other good stuff, not delved yet.

I agree with that actually. When talking to a small child in the context of the child having to have a social interaction with an unknown female person I would always use "lady" not "woman".
Maireas · 14/11/2020 20:08

That's a great statue, littlbrowndog.
Really strong and clever. Where is it?

littlbrowndog · 14/11/2020 20:11

Skipton Woods I just read.

On a sitv called womensart on twitter

That willow sculpture is fabulous, very classy as opposed to the melting tinfoil naked barbie poor Mary got.

Oh don't be so silly. As several posters have said on the thread that you are talking about behind its back - context is all.
Maireas · 14/11/2020 20:20

It is classy. Also dignified!
