"Exciting news – we are working with
@DragStoryHourUK
to bring you a FABULOUS family friendly storytime.
More details to follow. "

I had a vague recollection of them planning one before, and a quick search tells me it was cancelled, due to pressure. Not sure what pressure, or how, and why they are now planning another.
I know they are contentious and I can't square the circle of why promoting difference and acceptance can only be done by drag queens. Also who pays for them?

OP posts:
InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 19/10/2020 17:49

They have removed the ability to comment ... but the retweets with comments are enough..

What is it with Leeds and it's askewed attitude towards women? Leeds also has a designated'prostitution' zone...?

zanahoria · 19/10/2020 18:47

can't the librarian just read the books to the kids? if the librarian happens to be a drag queen then fair enoughb but see no reason to draft one in especially

Sexnotgender · 19/10/2020 18:48

Link doesn’t work anymore.

When will they learn!

JellySlice · 19/10/2020 19:23

How about a female firefighter or a male nurse read stories to children? Or a visually impaired person? Or a person with a prosthetic? Or a person who uses a wheelchair? Or a bilingual person who could deliver the story in two languages?

What does an adult entertainer whose entire shtick is based on stereotype-driven sexual innuendo have to do with demonstrating diversity to children? How is stereotype-driven sexual innuendo in any way family-friendly?

AcornAutumn · 19/10/2020 19:31

I might actually watch this if it’s possible without a log in etc.

I was really hoping all this would have gone by now.

Antibles · 19/10/2020 20:51

You're right OP, this is bloody Groundhog Day.

Councillor Sarah Field pursued this and it was dropped. It was the 'Aida H Dee' drag queen.

I cannot believe the brass neck of these people to come back for another try.

nepeta · 19/10/2020 21:05

They won't allow comments on their Twitter account unless you are mentioned in the tweet! Isn't this a government organisation?

Can children tell the subtle differences between ridiculing extreme sex roles and ridiculing women? I very much doubt it. So this whole thing is an invitation to make fun of women and girls.

FairFriday · 19/10/2020 21:06

When will this fashion end?

AcornAutumn · 19/10/2020 21:10

nepeta you can comment by quoting the tweet.

Someone had made a FOI request for the correspondence relating to the June event.

www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/672182/response/1604573/attach/html/3/All%20correspondence%20DQSH%20Redacted.pdf.html

It's worth a read

IAmNotAGirl · 20/10/2020 10:43

Request was put in by Julie Furlong Star

IwishNothingButTheBestForYou2 · 20/10/2020 11:40

@FairFriday

When will this fashion end?

Oscar Wilde said: “Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.”

If only..

FairFriday · 20/10/2020 12:30

Ah, but fads come and go. Remember Mr Blobby? Princess Diana/Sloane Ranger haircuts? Bum Bags? Rabbit fur coats? Flares? Kings Road punks with safety pins through the nose/ear, Rod Hull & Emu... Not forgetting using lead paint on your face for that deathly pallor, bathing once a year, painting 'attractive' blue veins on your decolletage, beauty marks to hide smallpox scars...

Toseland · 20/10/2020 23:23

Oh so no charge for this? We all know nothing in life is free.
I’ve just realised what makes me rage most about drag story time is that a man is there openly mocking women in front of and to their children - does that sow a seed of something in a child’s mind?

stumbledin · 20/10/2020 23:38

I may be wrong but I think somehow clicking on a link to a twitter URL means you get blocked. (I've had this on 2 other threads)

But if you copy the tweet link and paste it into your browser you get the tweet.

Does this mean twitter is protecting its users from the harridans of FWR?!! Grin

Summerdayshaze · 21/10/2020 00:02

He’s also raising money for Mermaids, says he wants to punch JK Rowling and she needs to get in the bin, calls Cllr Sarah Field a terf bigot, says love has no age and is now set to be an authority on black lives matter for children, even though he’s not black.

Leeds Libraries are delighted to have him back and have apologised for the unpleasant haters.

I really don't see the harm.

I'd happily take my child to one of these, no different to panto dressing up really.

Are we supposed to get our knickers in a twist about the ugly sisters as well now?

KatVonlabonk · 21/10/2020 08:00

That email chain was interesting. So the drag queen offered to do it for free eh? Interesting.

Drag is adult. There are loads better and more diverse people we could get to read to kids.

Does anyone know if Leeds Libraries aware of his views?

FairFridaythe13th · 21/10/2020 08:47

They should. I would be very wary of taking a child to see this event - and more wary of those who thought they were a fit person to host events for children.

What exactly is the ‘benefit’ of this?

Summerdayshaze · 21/10/2020 19:13

@LizzieSiddal yes they’re aware but don’t care.
