Some of the script:

STAFF AT THE Oberstown Detention Facility have threatened industrial action after a young female detainee was moved into a new mixed-gender unit.

“Fórsa has called on the employer to immediately disestablish the mixed-gender unit with immediate effect and engage with the union to resolve this matter of trade dispute.

It is understood residential care workers in Oberstown have flagged their opposition to the mixed-gender units with management on numerous occasions. Social care workers, who act as underage prison wardens, are fearful that one of the detainees may seek to take exploit the fact that there is a female in this unit.

*I was seriously assaulted in a unit just like this by a young boy (16). I was assaulted many times and by girls as well, however this boys strength and power was too much even for me as a grown up. I hate to think about the young girls in this situation.

*A vulnerable young female, being put in with convicted child rapists and murderers

The teenage killers of Ana Kriégel were (are?) at Oberstown

Oh God.

Social care workers, who act as underage prison wardens, are fearful that one of the detainees may seek to take exploit the fact that there is a female in this unit.

They are also aware that a number of detainees at the institution have been violent or made threats of violence against young women.

The United Nations Minimum Standards for the Treatment of Prisoners states: 'Men and women shall so far as possible be detained in separate institutions; in an institution which receives both men and women, the whole of the premises allocated to women shall be entirely separate'.

They're breaching the most basic human rights principles around detaining men and women. They're breaching international human rights principles with casual disdain. And they're doing it for the most vulnerable women in the community, too.

Doesn't Ireland care about women at all?

FindTheTruth · 18/10/2020 10:27

wellbehaved thanks for the UN standards for prisoners, I can't understand how any country can justify mixed sex prisons

What ARE the Oberstown management thinking? they sound awful in this article (by the union) www.forsa.ie/industrial-action-risk-at-oberstown-campus/

I read this and I know it originally said mixed sex. I remember being surprised it used the word sex.

It's a ridiculous idea, but I suppose what's one more female casualty. It's not as if they are really people Hmm

Imnobody4 · 18/10/2020 11:17

What on earth is going on in Ireland? Loosening the grip of Catholicism hasn't made any difference to the level of misogyny in public policies.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 18/10/2020 11:20

I hope the staff prevail it’s disgusting that they are having to threaten to strike simply to provide basic safeguarding for the children in their care

doublehalo · 18/10/2020 11:28

Is this Barbie?

Porridgeoat · 18/10/2020 11:29

Batshit crazy system

FloralBunting · 18/10/2020 11:32

I hope the woman stays safe. Scandalous.

It's so interesting to see the smokescreen of Catholic misogyny clear away to reveal a cultural hierarchy that doesn't need religion to justify or excuse their contempt for women anymore.

gardenbird48 · 18/10/2020 11:34

@doublehalo

Is this Barbie?
I guess if it was actually a 'mixed gender' unit, that wouldn't be a problem as that would include Barbie (but remain single sex) in with the boys but judging by the reaction of the staff, they have replaced sex with gender so they have put an actual female in with the males.

Have they lost all concept of humanity??

doublehalo · 18/10/2020 12:02

I thought in Ireland now Barbie is a female??

growinggreyer · 18/10/2020 12:07

This shows why we cannot surrender the words woman and female. We have no idea whether this inmate is an actual female or whether the gender magic dust has been sprinkled and we are actually seeing a male inmate with a wig on being put into the appropriate unit for them.

Cailleach1 · 18/10/2020 12:27

Barbie is with the other women in Limerick prison. It is good that other women are locked up with a male who is incarcerated because of their danger to women who they want to rape and murder. Oberstown is a Youth Detention Centre, not too far from Dublin. Other side of the island. Those with long term sentences go on to an adult prison at 18 and a half years.

There were? separate boys and girls detention units. They are now creating a 'mixed gender' unit. Some of the boys will have been in for the rape and murder of girls. Even the adult staff get assaulted and two boys escaped before by assaulting staff with an iron crow bar.

The excuse being used is to consolidate costs. There probably isn't an equal amount of girl offenders. So, in my opinion, the ones who the State incarcerates (I would be amazed if the offences was anything approaching the violence, rape and murder like some of the boys) are to be thrown to the boys like rabbits to coarsing greyhounds. And women in general, especially in vulnerable situations. By this generation of misogynistic male politicians. Their lack of respect and regard for women is the same as their grandfathers who treated the situation of women with the same lack of concern.

It is a new progressive Ireland. Legislated for still by predominantly male politicians. They call themselves progressive because they have now progressed to implementing laws according to new (but still comfortably misogynistic) Ideologies rather than the old Catholic Church ones.

FindTheTruth · 18/10/2020 13:37

😱my god.

These girls need support. is anyone else supporting them beside the union?

as for costs.... wouldn't the girls have the right to sue if they are attacked?

It’s horrific.

Ireland still carries great shame about the very recent appalling treatment of women and and children by the church. In a rush to put that behind them and demonstrate their progressive credentials they have walked into this nightmare .

I hope the staff at Oberstown do strike and that it shines a light on this new misogyny

FindTheTruth · 18/10/2020 13:45

Who's the minister responsible?

OP posts:
DeliciouslyFemale · 18/10/2020 13:49

Barbie was interviewed and tested by experts in gender dysphoria and judged not to be trans, but simply pretending to be trans. He should never ever have been permitted entry to a woman’s facility. He’s a man, a male, a dangerous, woman hating fake. You can report me all you like, but that means you’re either supporting men pretending to be trans or you don’t believe the trans experts, therefore shouldn’t be supporting young people seeking help from them. Balls in your court.

doublehalo · 18/10/2020 13:54

It's not about personal opinion. It's about the laws of the land.

doublehalo · 18/10/2020 13:55

Or biological reality.

andyoldlabour · 18/10/2020 13:58

I used to think of Ireland as a sensible, friendly place, but when you scratch the surface, abominations like this are allowed to happen. Forget the word "gender", there should be male and female detention centres, who in their right mind would think otherwise.

ElPatito · 18/10/2020 14:06

Is there a word for shocking but sadly not shocking at the same time?

Cailleach1 · 18/10/2020 15:22

Ireland is certainly not on it's own. Other countries are presenting all this under the guise of being 'progressive' like this too. The UK were fortunate that the Tories were against equal marriage to a degree they brought this the first GRA which has unintentionally acted as a bulwark against it. Being early adopters (due to disapproval of same sex marriage), the UK had less of the wonderful features of the Yogyakarta and +10 principles ( created by no state or recognised international agreement). Don't worry, lots of lovely 'progressive' men in Westminster parliament were incandescent (see Crispin Blunt) that women were even considered and the legislation wasn't so easily f*cked through without debate. Ireland's situation is one they envy. Nothing already in place and then shunt it through on the qt. Sex being a protected characteristic was a useful UK feature. Also, that other countries jumped first, so people can see how it is going.

I can't imagine why the staff would strike if the person was in the appropriate unit.

Cailleach1 · 18/10/2020 15:31

Don't think that it couldn't have been on the cards for the UK. A series of haphazard, unintended and unhappy events have tripped it up and forced it all out into the open before it got safety over the line.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 18/10/2020 15:38

What's the justification for doing this though? Why are they putting a female in with males?
