Some of the script:

STAFF AT THE Oberstown Detention Facility have threatened industrial action after a young female detainee was moved into a new mixed-gender unit.

“Fórsa has called on the employer to immediately disestablish the mixed-gender unit with immediate effect and engage with the union to resolve this matter of trade dispute.

It is understood residential care workers in Oberstown have flagged their opposition to the mixed-gender units with management on numerous occasions. Social care workers, who act as underage prison wardens, are fearful that one of the detainees may seek to take exploit the fact that there is a female in this unit.

*I was seriously assaulted in a unit just like this by a young boy (16). I was assaulted many times and by girls as well, however this boys strength and power was too much even for me as a grown up. I hate to think about the young girls in this situation.

*A vulnerable young female, being put in with convicted child rapists and murderers

Note:
The teenage killers of Ana Kriégel were (are?) at Oberstown

@KnightsofColumbusThatHurt

What's the justification for doing this though? Why are they putting a female in with males?
Cost cutting apparently Angry

I'm trying to find the article where I read that about saving costs. However, there have been issues surrounding Oberstown for a few years. There has been an extensive fire in the past and there are staff shortages. This new mixed gender unit is probably a concern for multiple reasons.

There had been a commissioned report (in 2018?), which it seems was not published for legal reasons according to the minister for Children and Youth Affairs in 2018. I don't know if the report remained under wraps.

So, the union that represents staff at Oberstown is Fórsa. It is not just about the young people, it is also about the risk posed to staff.

So, Trinity House, Oberstown boys and Oberstown girls were all merged into one institution in 2016. There are different Units though.
In this article from 2017, it said that Oberstown has the capacity for 48 boys and six girls but that females(sic) hadn't been sent there for years.

Thanks Cailleach. So the Minister for Children wanted to find out about why girls shouldn't be at Oberstown, BUT a report on Oberstown was withheld from her. Witheld from the Childrens Minister. She had "concerns over recommendations that females should not be kept in the centre, but could not properly enquire why without the report"

It's a report based on a 'review of Oberstown, commissioned after a fire, protests and strike action by staff over health and safety concerns

They didn't publish the report as people 'were not offered “right of reply” by the report’s authors'? Baffling.

AND
🙈the authors had gone outside the agreed terms of the report. 👀👀👀👀👀👀

^ this is worrying. It's only natural to follow up things as you investigate, do a review, do research. is this about inconvenient truths? why can' ministers access it?. (not even a redacted version). what is going on?

Is this the minister now?:
Roderic O’Gorman TD representing Dublin West
Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration, and Youth

May I again point out that Roderic O Gorman had a cosy pic with Peter Tatchell on his twitter and only half arsed defended it and blamed homophobia for people objecting to it.

Cailleach1 · 21/10/2020 14:01

I think Roderic O Gorman would be trying to pretend that it was in relation to homophobia then. If he can disingenuously file it under homophobia that would give a handy, but false veneer of protection to what the objections actually were in relation to.

I think it was an old article with a discussion about the idea of sexual activity with children quite a bit under the age of consent. Peter Tatchell was part of this report/interview or article in some way. Not to put too fine a point on it, it was a discussion in relation to paedophilia.

It is a little dishonest in my view for Roderic O Gorman to try to deflect the objections by pretending it was about homophobia. The objections weren't in relation to the sex lives of consenting adults. The objections were in relation to an old discussion in relation to adults having sexual activity with children.

I'll see later on if I can find the stuff on it.

Oh god. I see he is the minister for children. Wow. He should have to clarify that. It is not a good look for the minister for children.

FindTheTruth · 21/10/2020 18:24

They're moving the child in with males to cut costs, yet they get €6,557 per child per week in Oberstown

Don't know much about Roderic. Even if he is any good, can he do anything? what I don't understand is how a country stops a children's minister from accessing a report about a children's facility they're responsible for. not even a redacted report.

That poor, poor girl.

I'm almost in tears reading about this. Thank goodness Ireland has unions willing to kick up a stink about it.

JKRowlingforever · 21/10/2020 23:49

So we gave 2 Male sex offenders in the women's prison in limerick and 1 female in a oberstown among the males.

No- it was the Minister for Children who refused to publish it.

Minister for Children and Youth AffairsKatherine Zapponesaid the publishing of the operational review of the children’s detention centre, commissioned in response to issues at the facility in 2016, presented “substantial legal risks” as individuals or bodies named in the report were not offered “right of reply” by the report’s authors

The person whose concerns you quoted was Anne Rabbitte from Fianna Faila member of a committee looking into this.

The Minister for Children and Youth AffairsKatherine Zapponeprevented anyone from seeing it supposedly on the advice of the Attorney General.
