Am I going to look like a complete eejit?

I was trying to set up a profile for my daughter on the Zoe covid reporting app. My son has tested positive for covid and wanted to add the whole family as symptomatic etc
They asked what sex she was assigned at birth and I saw red and stopped setting it up and emailed them to say it was a ridiculous question as sex is observed. May have ranted slightly. They’re going to think I’m bonkers aren’t they? So fed up with this shit though. Just feeling a bit embarrassed now and I don’t feel well so I’m all doom and gloom.

Hope your family has a mild case.

It's a fair enough thing to email over. Sex isn't assigned. I stop filling out anything that uses that terminology. I wouldn't worry about them thinking you're a crank, and just think of it as having made a necessary point.

In this case, is using the app (I don't know it, sorry) of benefit to you? If so, don't cut off your nose to spite your face. Just register when you feel like you can deal with the unscientific language.

ButterflyBitch · 14/10/2020 20:48

Thank you. I hope they don’t think I’m mad I just wanted to say how stupid it is. I think it’s not necessary for her to be on there as if her test comes back positive then it’ll be registered on the track and trace. The Zoe apps a medical study I think. Maybe I’ll try again tomorrow when hopefully I’m not feeling as rubbish.

You're ok OP, have a rant!

Also, who cares what they think, firstly it's a valid concern due to fact that biology matters, and it's just an app.

It's not your employer or a close friend with a trans kid or anything that can really rebound on you.

You're the customer here, you can complain or send feedback. I'm sorry you have had a positive test. I hope the necessary isolation goes ok. Wine

TheFleegleHasLanded · 14/10/2020 20:53

Loads of us complained when the app first came out OP, there were a few threads on the board, a search should find them.

Mind you, if you want to save time I can tell you the ending; we were all ignored.

ButterflyBitch · 14/10/2020 20:53

Thanks OhHoly. Think I’m just feeling a bit daft. Probably but sensitive due to feeling poorly. You’re right it’s not like I know them personally.

ButterflyBitch · 14/10/2020 20:54

What is wrong with the word that such a stupidly worded question is on there! Fleegle I’m disappointed but not surprised that you say that.

OP posts:
Skyliner001 · 14/10/2020 20:58

You already do 😊

ThinEndOfTheWedge · 14/10/2020 21:28

They are the ones who look like idiots - not you.

Singasonga · 14/10/2020 22:25

I'm fairly pissed off about the fact that they are forcing me to declare my underage children's genders on top of their sex "assigned at birth." Why do they need to know the former at all? And why are they making me declare identities for children?

ButterflyBitch · 14/10/2020 22:36

Yes Sing agreed. It’s all bonkers and pissing me off. Don’t know if they’ll reply or not

OP posts:
ChattyLion · 14/10/2020 22:38

It’s great that you contacted them and hope everyone feels better soon.

gassylady · 14/10/2020 22:40

I contacted them about this months ago when they first changed the questions asked. I pointed out that it was already becoming clear that males were at greater risk so why not clear data.

Whatwouldscullydo · 14/10/2020 22:42

Sex matters in medicine. Its not a tim to pander to feelings. Its facts that will save you or kill you.

Nice one op no one needs to know your identity they just need to know your sex and and how covid might affect you.

ilheartjennimurray · 14/10/2020 22:57

I’m contacting them too, I can’t answer their question

goisey · 14/10/2020 23:12

You did good op.
I'm going to follow your example and email next time I see something like that.

thirdfiddle · 14/10/2020 23:23

When I did it there was a self describe box which I used to say sex not gender or something along those lines. Took me a few tries to get something accepted, there may have been a non explicit character limit. Well done for emailing. I do think it's worth making a fuss with these things. Maybe if pandering to the identity lobby doesn't give you the easy life you'd hoped for people will stop doing it and design questions that are accessible to both gender believers and nonbelievers.

DappledOliveGroves · 14/10/2020 23:24

I deleted the app when they decided to go woke.

AdultHumanFemale · 14/10/2020 23:27

I was shocked to see 'gender' on my DC's flu vaccination consent forms recently. I rang school and emailed the company to register my objection. I think it's important to make the point.

Reggiano · 14/10/2020 23:31

Taking the political side of things out of the equation, if there's a case of
covid in the family, you really want to report that and get a test. Covid doesn't care about these things and you gotta do what's best for your childs health atm

Melroses · 14/10/2020 23:33

You did good. I was registered with the twins study which they wanted to link, but when I couldn't get past the 2 stage questions without affirming a belief in gender ideology, I gave up.

I got ignored by them too.

The silly app kept badgering me to fill it in so I deleted it.

I am not sure I want to bother with the twins stuff further either.

ilheartjennimurray · 14/10/2020 23:36

I’ve complained and deleted the app. Will reinstate if they correct it to ask medically accurate questions.

Melroses · 14/10/2020 23:53

They still have a few areas without enough signed up (can't link to it as it doesn't work atm - seems to be about to change the format again)

EdgeOfACoin · 15/10/2020 06:27

@Skyliner001

You already do 😊
@Skyliner001

Perhaps you can help me. If sex is 'assigned at birth', how is it possible to determine sex before birth? How is it possible to screen embryos on the basis of sex (e.g. for the purposes of reducing the risk of genetic illnesses)?

You see, I think that the phrase 'assigned at birth' is ludicrous for the above reasons. I think that the OP is not ridiculous for pointing that out.

I am curious to know as to why you disagree. What am I missing?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 15/10/2020 06:51

So the creators of this app, which could support the health service and protect people’s health, are willing to lose potential uptake and possibly skew their results by ignoring biology. Brilliant. OP, you’re not the eejit.

AsTreesWalking · 15/10/2020 07:11

You are not an eejit OP, but what a shame it is that this wording is putting sensible people off using the app.
It's an important study that has moved our understanding of cv19 on. I've been using it from the beginning, and learned a lot from the updates it provides. Wording notwithstanding, it's worth using.
Tim Spector's twin studies have discovered a lot of useful stuff as well, including the insights into gut bacteria (see The Diet Myth - stupid title, fascinating book)
I can't understand how such a c!ever, eminent doctor can go along with this nonsense.
