Thinly veiled ad for supermarket clothes makes out that dressing just like thousands of ordinary women is a brave, exciting statement of non-binary identity

Came across this on FB and found it incredibly irritating. Can someone please explain to me how wearing ordinary supermarket clothes that wouldn’t warrant a second glance in the street is actually a brave and exciting expression of non-binary identity? 🤷‍♀️

@Melroses What sort of underpants? I have been fancying the trunk style as women's gussets seem to be turning into g-strings these days, even on the Bridget Joneses. I bought a useless pair from M&S that go all the way up to my ribs at the top, and up my Rs at the bottom.
Men’s cotton hipsters. Make sure they don’t have a penis opening. They are great, I do a lot of sports/exercise and they are so much better than women’s underwear as they stay in place and are better if you’re sweating. And they look better under leggings.

Surely as a basketball player she wore non binary clothes every day? Unless they still play in a slip in the state? Or did she mean when she moved back to Ireland she ditched all her jeans and put on a frock at the airport?

Melroses · 06/10/2020 19:22

They not not so thin too.

Galvantula · 06/10/2020 19:27

Wow, when I went to my secondary school discos in trousers and not a dress I had no idea I was non binary at such a young age. 🙄 I'd decided to get my hair short at one time too, so I actually did get the piss taken for looking like a boy.

What a load of pants. I feel bad that no one told this person they can wear and do what they like.

I spend every day now still in jeans, T-Shirt and jumper/hoodie. I feel weird as fuck the approx one day a year I go nuts and put a dress on.

The early 90s helped me, as loads of people were wearing their dads old shirts and scruffy jeans and boots. ☺️

@VoleClock I've been looking at getting myself some nice boxers actually. I was browsing on Amazon one day which decided to show me "boyshorts for tomboy/trans" Confused

So wimmin can't have comfy shorts 🤔

boatyardblues · 06/10/2020 19:40

The buttons are wonky on the khaki coat. Meh!

I dress like this about 50% of the time and 100% of my first maternity leave. As others have said, they’re just comfortable clothes.

Galvantula · 06/10/2020 19:42

@scrappydappydoooooo how did you pick the size? I wear a lot of men's sized t-shirts but I'm not sure if the pants equivalent world work. I suppose maybe actually measuring myself might work. Grin

HPFA · 06/10/2020 19:58

This ought to be funny but honestly it's fucking irritating.

What fashion magazine would ever feature an actual woman dressed like this except in a before and after where HPFA admits that she's let herself go.

Except if someone calls themselves non-binary it's suddenly super cool to wear perfectly ordinary women's clothes.

boatyardblues · 06/10/2020 20:07

I thought it would link to the Tu menswear collection, but nope. Just the bog standard womenswear range. 🤷‍♂️

Menofsteel · 06/10/2020 21:04

Currently wearing a bus driver uniform including a tie...am I speshul too??? Am I non binary or a man? Damn it, the amazing sex changing jumpers are responsible for my confusion!

thevassal · 06/10/2020 21:14

"I laugh at you because you're all the same" indeed - you are literally wearing a plain t shirt from one of the country's biggest supermarkets. Hardly one of a kind haute couture...

Lougle · 06/10/2020 21:20

I'm wearing paint-stained jeans and a t-shirt with a hole in it today. I've been preserving a chicken coop, all on my own.

MadamBatty · 06/10/2020 21:31

I’ve just read that article...I just realised I know her Mam...her mother is all Straight trousers, Chelsea boots & crew neck jumpers....

Honestly? I just held them up against me in the shop. I find roughly a size or two bigger than I'd normally wear works well. That way I have room for my hips and bum. You don't need to go too much bigger as the baggy front part stretches out across the belly. I like them so much though. They don't cut across the bum like "boy shorts" made for women do so there is no VPL and they never ride up or shift about. And they are made of a sturdier cotton than women's underwear too. They just feel more there. I even love that the waistband sits high on my waist, it's in just the perfect position. And I think they actually look really cute, like a 1950s style bikini bottom.

Image of a set I have.

I’m so delayed, I’ve only just clocked what an enby is 🤦‍♀️

@1forAll74

All this non binary and gender neutral crap etc is very tiresome to read about, and meaningless rubbish.
Lol. I find the ‘they’ thing super confusing. I have several transitioning/ transitioned friends and they are all (individually) doing it very uniquely so it’s really hard to empathise or try to have any discussion without dropping colossal clangers. I tick several diversity boxes by virtue of my health , race and relationship status but I can’t be allowed identify in any way with ‘this’ struggle of theirs. I keep reminding myself it’s all new, in this incarnation, to all of us and that we’re all still finding our feet with it and for someone who’s actually going through it, it is probably not unlike entering adolescence again and building a new identity whilst dealing with other factors such as hormones, societal expectations, family etc.
Galvantula · 07/10/2020 05:41

Thanks scrappy :)

Mooncupdotcom · 07/10/2020 06:33

I always wear sainsbury men's jumpers and tshirt because otherwise the arms aren't long enough, ditto socks. I thought I was lanky but now I know I'm Speshul.

nevernotstruggling · 07/10/2020 08:53

@famousforwrongreason that sounds exhausting.
