Came across this on FB and found it incredibly irritating. Can someone please explain to me how wearing ordinary supermarket clothes that wouldn’t warrant a second glance in the street is actually a brave and exciting expression of non-binary identity? 🤷‍♀️

What tea said ... I very quickly tired of how desperate it was to tell us wimmin we should be kinder. Confused

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/10/2020 21:36

You're right nicegerbil, to clarify, her parents are trying to raise awareness of the situation and have created the hashtag to be shared.

If reports are right, she was the victim of homophobia.

JKRisagryff · 05/10/2020 21:36

Fuck me. Wtf do they think the rest of us wear? I have been dressed in very special attire this week in jeans, DH’s massive stolen hoodies and boots/converse. Apparently don’t need to worry that people will think I’m in slobby mum gear. They’ve actually all been gasping and doing double takes in the street at my bravery.

1000umbrellas · 05/10/2020 21:37

You wouldn't want to rush into wearing jeans and a jumper all at once.... imagine! Lolling at this @napody Grin

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/10/2020 21:38

What's "non- conforming" about wearing jeans and a jumper?

Well, precisely.

I was astounded to hear a young colleague describe how her mother wouldn't allow her to dress how she wanted recently, eg a football top.

SophocIestheFox · 05/10/2020 21:42

If they had to “transition” to what they was wearing, which is 2020 nondescript, but they already didn’t wear “traditionally” feminine clothes, what the fuck was they actually wearing before? Loon pants? Pedal pushers? Full bore Adam and the Ants ensemble? That’s the only way I can fathom that they could have transitioned from the 1950s, when jeans and a jumper might have been a bit of a racy choice for a well brought up young lady, to this years high street.

NiceGerbil · 05/10/2020 21:43

The other point here is just...

Why so bland?
There are a range of styles across male and female fashion that are really sharp. From across the decades. And you could take from.

I've seen men in city of London in gorgeous 3 piece suits and wearing bowler hats.

Annie Lennox rocked a suit.

When I was at school the girls and the boys both wore 501s and a waistcoat. We wore pretty much the same clothes completely, looking back

Goth style crosses the sexes and genders.

Bowie in life on Mars. That suit! Georgeous.
Prince mmmm and his own style which crossed genders.

Of all the things you could choose to wear to express your non binary soul... Jeans and a jumper I personally see as a really safe feminine choice.

Fucking hell.

abbey44 · 05/10/2020 21:44

I'm 60-ish now and have been wearing clothes like this most of my life - even (gasp) men's shirts and jumpers because they're better made as a rule, and I like oversized. I thought I was just dressing for comfort and to please myself, but no, I've clearly been an early exponent of non-binary, well before we even knew what that was, and so far ahead of the curve that I'm meeting it on the way back. Who knew. Go me Grin

So many comments on here that I dearly wish we had a 'like' button for.

NiceGerbil · 05/10/2020 21:48

Thank you neurotrash. About the hashtag explanation.

For girls and boys, lesbian/ gay (and much worse words) are still a go to bullying thing irrespective of actual sexuality of the bullied child.

The fact that these things are used to bully, still, shows that children are still very keen on enforcing gender norms one of which is heterosexuality.

Where is stonewall? I'm serious. The basics are not done in large parts of society. And they sell gay men and lesbians down the river by redefining them as an 'ID' that anyone can claim.
Sound familiar?

Jeans and jumper were very much the thing in the late 1950s for young people.

Also tweedy jackets and cigarettes for the men Hmm

StanfordPines · 05/10/2020 21:53

If she wants to identify as non binary then that’s fine, but please don’t pretend you are the first woman to wear jeans and a jumper.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 05/10/2020 21:54

So does this mean I've been non binary all my life and never knew it?
Does it hell.
She's dressed like I and many of my friends dress every day. We dress for comfort, were women, wives, mothers, grandmothers, nothing more nothing less.
Today was jeans, and long sleeve navy tee.

SophocIestheFox · 05/10/2020 21:55

1940s then Grin maybe they had to cycle through the New Look before transitioning to a really fucking dull jumper, and they’re pissed off becuase those massive skirts and cinched waists were too restrictive and feminine.

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/10/2020 21:57

Same here plus Dr Martens and no need to pigeonhole us.

The 1940s had land girls.

Even allowing that the first picture is a prettified version from Land Girls both of these are more interesting than what she is wearing.

Anyone else channeling Syndrome from the Incredibles? Just substitute 'special' for 'super'.

Melroses · 05/10/2020 22:09

If I remember my James Herriot correctly, Helen scandalised the village by wearing trousers and a jumper in the 1930s - very risque Grin

Siameasy · 05/10/2020 22:10

This is depressing. What happened to being a goth?!

StandUpStraight · 05/10/2020 22:11

I think you have to be remarkably self obsessed to even begin to think that dressing in perfectly nondescript, ordinary women’s clothes renders you androgynous-looking. You’d have to be completely unaware of culture (popular and otherwise) and fashion from any era other than your own. Hell, these clothes are so ordinary that you’d have to not be opening your eyes when you leave your house. I do think that so much of this gender shit comes from people who don’t do things in the real world, and are so absorbed in their online and mental bubbles that they have purely and simply lost touch with material reality.

notyourhandmaid · 05/10/2020 22:20

Jeans and jumper should not require a 'style video'.

MrsVeryTired · 05/10/2020 22:21

I know it's not the main point of the discussion, others have covered that well, but those mentioning cultural appropriation for her hair- isnt she mixed race?

DidoLamenting · 05/10/2020 22:24

Is this the same person? The name is unusual. If it is - how is it possible to be involved in a competitive sport like basketball (which is not one like athletics which does have gendered costumes) and be so unaware of what is normal clothes for women?

What makes me worry is what is happening to the younger generation that they consider jeans and jumper is an edgy statement of non binary-ness ?

What has changed in society, where was the turning point that society has become so inwardly focused and arguably self absorbed,? How has society regressed to this point, I thought we had won these battles, clearly not.

WatchoutfortheROUS · 05/10/2020 22:53

I didn't even read that I was so bored just reading the title and looking at the pictures Grin Woman breaks boundaries but wearing a t-shirt and coat? Uh-huh. I'm inspired Grin

BINtersectionalFeminism · 05/10/2020 22:53

Maybe she lives in a hipster part of east London and so she does stick out, for being so mainstream in comparison?
