Just seen Jo M twitter feed. I assume this is his response to the DfE guidance although it isn’t explicit. I agree with him that children should have quicker access to quality mental health resources but I then part company with him on the results of that. He ignores the whistle blowers from within GIDS on parental pressure and the NHS on the impact of puberty blockers. He then rounds off with a sideswipe at JKR and the promise of the Good Law Project looking at this area. He seems to be doubling down when Mermaids is furiously back pedalling.

@PigeonToe

Doesn't he realise that we all have to maintain our "amateur" feminist status to stay eligible for the feminist Olympics. Professionalism is ruining the sport!
Sniggered like fuck at this

That 'insulated by her wealth' comment is such a giveaway to misogyny, I think. Because women shouldn't enjoy that kind of immunity when they express an opinion. It's as if her wealth were inherited or some sort of windfall, isn't it; not the result of her own hard work and genius.

I've been watching the new series Ted Lasso on AppleTV and there was a line in it that really got me, it was a young Nigerian football player talking to the head of the club and he said :"did you know that JK Rowling has more money than the Queen? I like the idea of someone becoming rich because of what they gave to the world not just because of who their family is".

FloraFox · 29/09/2020 00:13

"amateur hobbyist" - what is he then? He's a tax lawyer fishing around for a case to take pro bono, he's just described himself.

as for "no parent or teacher spontaneously pushes children to change gender" well no lawyer would ever make a statement so incapable of being substantiated ... oh hang on....

MindTheMinotaur · 29/09/2020 08:07

Really? Who has made children's lives more difficult? JK Rowling who expressed carefully worded reservations or the adults that chose to message that to children as hatred and denial of their existence? I don't tell my child that the RSPB hates her and wants to replace her with birds.

I guess the whole patriarchy and the class system and the traditional hierarchies get a little shake whenever an 'ordinary' individual - especially a woman - rises by their own efforts and refuses to conform to the expected stereotypes for that scenario. I think the only acceptable alternatives society has for these situations are:

  1. Go off the rails with drink, drugs, fast cars and scandals ( favoured option for male sporting stars and popstars of both sexes).
  1. Become part of the establishment, adopt its values and blend in with conspicuous displays of wealth (favoured for self-made industrialists and business people)

Option 3: Continue to be yourself, go on caring about people and turn your acquired wealth to good uses while refusing to either self-destruct or shut up is just too disconcerting for establishment figures.

Methinks Jolyon needs to read some Elaine Showalter. ROGD is so clearly a type of mass hysteria and we know really quite a lot about how that develops. There is no way parents and other adults involved in all things trans aren't helping to feed the situation. No way. You only have to dip your toe into Twitter to see there are parents out there who are getting something out of their children identifying as trans. It is so clear to see.

RoyalCorgi · 29/09/2020 13:26

ROGD is so clearly a type of mass hysteria.

That is bang on. Mass hysteria can be relatively harmless or it can be dangerous and ROGD is an example of the latter. It absolutely beggars belief that adults are going along with it and even encouraging it rather than putting their foot down and saying, "Don't be silly, you'll grow out of it."

PearPickingPorky · 29/09/2020 14:51

And weirdly, if the same rules applied to teenage girls as apply to middle-aged males - namely that their hairy bodies and penises don't make them any less of a woman - then this mass hysteria wouldn't even matter that much. If thousands of teenage girls want to identify as boys or non-binary, so? The issue is that for children they have to be immediately carted off to the gender clinic for irreversible medical treatment.

I can’t believe I missed this at the time! From Meggie Foster who does the brilliant lip syncs.
