Just seen Jo M twitter feed. I assume this is his response to the DfE guidance although it isn’t explicit. I agree with him that children should have quicker access to quality mental health resources but I then part company with him on the results of that. He ignores the whistle blowers from within GIDS on parental pressure and the NHS on the impact of puberty blockers. He then rounds off with a sideswipe at JKR and the promise of the Good Law Project looking at this area. He seems to be doubling down when Mermaids is furiously back pedalling.

But I'd expect a legal practitioner to be more aware of conflict of interest in a general sense, especially if they're very high profile and many many people will take whatever they say as gospel. To me this just means he's abusing a particular position of privilege.

crsacre · 28/09/2020 16:27

Sam Smethers (Fawcett Society) is on the board of the Good Law Project.

Kit19 · 28/09/2020 16:31

Fair point Errol

you'd think therefore he'd be more sympathetic to the women who tweet him with their experience of ROGD or concerns about their child but he really doesnt seem to be

AltogetherAndrews · 28/09/2020 16:35

What is JKR’s amateur hobby here? The writing, or the being female? I suppose it would make sense that he thinks being female could be a hobby.

bookgirl1982 · 28/09/2020 16:39

Amateur hobby = commenting on trans issues, I think

Kit19 · 28/09/2020 16:44

Seems this thread def being monitored

Women's rights issues. The tweet that kicked things off was about being able to use the word 'women' on issues relating to women. (I think I already said this upthread).

Being a woman and standing up for women's rights isn't a 'hobby'.

InvisibleDragon · 28/09/2020 16:47

I'm really ambivalent about JM. So much of the work thst he does with the Good Law project is so great - digging out the dodgy government PPE contracts and getting the ruling on proroguing parliament.

But he has a huge blind spot on this, which is perhaps understandable if it's affecting his own family. I would love to see JM and Joanna Cherry have a discussion on these issues though - would hopefully really get to the heart of the matter, rather than skating around on the surface.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2020 16:48

But amateur for sure, few women get paid for defending women's rights. I've no idea why doing it for free would be seen as a cause for disrespect.

StandWithYou · 28/09/2020 17:08

I agree with ImvisibleDragon that the work on Government contracts etc is great however I disagree on his views on this. Women have a right to comment on issues that affect them and JKR should be able to give her opinion.

I think he is trying to dismiss her opinions precisely because they have brought more attention to this matter. There has been a lot of movement since she wrote her essays and tweets.

‘Insulated by her wealth’ vs funding Lumos and giving away millions to help children. I rather think certain celebrities who endorse TW being able to enter single sex spaces e.g refuges, changing rooms, wards, prisons etc are insulated by their wealth as it will never affect them.

@PronounssheRa

It's interesting, at a time where medical negligence solicitors are starting to circle Maugham decides to use the good law project as a means to attempt to get even more children medicalised, some for life.

He is so personally invested in this he cant be objective (I also think he is a raging misogynist, so will only listen to women who agree with him)

If you haven't already listened to Douglas Murray on talk radio this morning, have listen, the last 30 seconds are a blistering attack on mermaids.

's the Julia Hartley-Brewer interview of Douglas Murray PronounssheRa mentioned, on TalkRadio's YouTube channel.
GreenTrem · 28/09/2020 18:29

"insulated by her wealth from any real consequence" - God, he's really seething that they weren't able to cancel, bully or intimidate JKR into silence. Maugham's claim that she is making thousand's of children's lives more difficult is really beneath contempt. His tweets will not age well.

PurpleHoodie · 28/09/2020 19:09

Love to see a billionaire woman doing good for others.

PurpleHoodie · 28/09/2020 19:09

Did I spell billionaire correctly?

HPFA · 28/09/2020 19:32

I'm puzzled by what sort of lawsuit he could be bringing. The Keira Bell case is coming up, then there's the independent review, if both of those find against puberty blockers what case could he possibly have?

RoyalCorgi · 28/09/2020 19:33

Imagine being a man so arrogant that you think a woman having an opinion on women's rights is an "amateur hobbyist". The ego of it! What's that saying - give me the confidence of a mediocre white male?

The one thing you can say about the trans activist movement is that it really has brought out the misogynists in force. There are so many men who truly hate women.

RoyalCorgi · 28/09/2020 19:36

"insulated by her wealth from any real consequence"

Yes, it's OK to threaten women with rape, torture and murder if they're billionaires. I wonder when it stops being OK? If they have just a few hundred million? A million? Half a million?

This is the man who squealed like a battered fox when Julia Hartley Brewer tweeted a link to a newspaper article that gave his address.

How utterly loathsome he is.

ThinEndOfTheWedge · 28/09/2020 19:38

Love to see a billionaire woman doing good for others.

Agreed - but to be pedantic I think JK has paid her way out of being a billionaire through philanthropy and paying her full stamp of tax.

RozWatching · 28/09/2020 19:54

I think he realised a long time ago that he's not on the side of the angels on this particular issue but he can't backtrack, hence the rage. The misogyny is coming out as a byproduct.

EwwSprouts · 28/09/2020 19:58

Doesn't he realise that we all have to maintain our "amateur" feminist status to stay eligible for the feminist Olympics. Professionalism is ruining the sport!

Imagine being a QC with obvious aspirations to be Mayor Of Munchkin Land and when the chips are down on the puberty blockers treatment protocol, you decide that the side which is sterilising gay and autistic children is the side to be on.

PearPickingPorky · 28/09/2020 22:18

I do wonder sometimes if the tie up between Mumsnet and the Batting QC ( on the Gingerbread project) is somehow influencing the moderation of this board.

Certainly seems so, this thread has more holes than my hosta.
