Let's not get drawn into any slamming matches as it important that this thread stands.

Here's an excellent article by Jo Bartosch.

doesn't mean that I can't speak on this thread

Nobody said you couldn’t. A few of us are calling out your hypocrisy and the fact you kept saying pages ago you didn’t find this or Posie interesting, you said it was irrelevant and yet you’re continuing to post, mostly to goad posters so you can then report them. It’s good to know that in fact you find Posie and this protest extremely interesting and you’re very invested in this. You’re doing wonders for her cause.

Datun · 21/09/2020 12:18

@SorryImKnew

Sounds like it comes down to whether Norbery's decision was right or wrong then.
Posie's organisation is political. They were arrested for it not being political.

But that's only half the story, the other half is the way the process was carried out.

And, of course, the upshot will also be that they might as well have written a how-to manual, for every gc women's group in the country.

All they are doing is amplifying that which they want to silence.

The own goals are never ending.

OldCrony · 21/09/2020 12:18

With a "hide poster" button wouldn't you still see some of the rubbish if other posters quoted them?

Winesalot · 21/09/2020 12:18

I also remember hearing KJ say that she had spent time discussing and clarifying their position with Liberty who were advising. As a human rights advisory group, one would think that Liberty should be able to tell them if they ticked the 'political' organisation or not.

The women did not just turn up without doing a lot of work beforehand to make sure they would meet the criteria.

Kazakaren · 21/09/2020 12:19

I seem to remember according to the data analytics a few years ago, for every poster there are twelve lurkers.

It must be true. The discussion on this topic and the amount of posters contributing has massively grown over the past three years. The more mumsnet get bad publicity by activists trying to shut it down, the more people come to see what's happening. Mumsnet are /were fabulous for letting the conversation continue in the face of adversity.

fatblackcatspaw · 21/09/2020 12:19

@Dances

Do the Covid rules apply to the 'protected' prostitution zone?

How is a blow job safely administered? Are the police policing Covid there I wonder?

BLOODY good question? surely under covid rules this zone could be shut down?

That's a fair point. I probably just need to maintain my internal 'ignore' button more efficiently.

I only joined because I spotted a buggy I liked the look of on the for sale pages 😂

If only we'd all just stuck to pushchairs and cooking.

@Kazakaren

I've now decided to invoke the virtual "hide poster" button

Wasn't mumsnet going to do this at some point? It's no different to the block functions on Twitter and Facebook. I'd definitely pay if that feature was added.

I'd argued against a block/ignore poster button on here for years, but now I would happily subscribe to Premium if it offered this option. Every other message board I read regularly has it.

It does, but for me it's easier to just scroll past those quoted posts. It feels a bit like being in one room with a group of people in a discussion , but overhearing a conversation next door that is less relevant to the one I'm in.

That is truly a shining thing of beauty. I have my reservations about the abuse it brings to Joanne Rowling, but on the other hand it is amazing publicity for the new book.

Winesalot · 21/09/2020 12:30

And of course, a I love JK Rowling sign is a continuation of the message set by KJ.

Cailleach1 · 21/09/2020 12:35

The West Yorkshire Police were laying in wait to do what they did. Did they have a pretext ready as there is usually no pushback or real accountability where women's rights are concerned? I can't fathom why they appear to be bigoted against women's rights. The plain clothes chappie was all about 'we'll talk about that afterwards'. Hmm. Beyond the condescension, it was a little like 'Give me a little time and I'll come up with something to fit retrospectively'.

I really hope they have to disclose what influenced and the full basis for their actions. Why did they lie (sic) in wait and shut the protest in connection with women's rights down? Why did they reject the motive when the meeting having a political purpose was explained to them? I'll just say allegedly they were told it was a political meeting prior to the event, so if that was the case it would be shocking if they shut it down on a pretext and lied about the information they were given. If that were the case it would be mendacity along with misogyny. One of the most frightening places for that is in the police force.

Maybe the force themselves decided they didn't like women organising in their women's interests. Maybe they seek classes to indoctrinate their force that 'woman' is merely an identity like a coat, that all and sundry can put on, rather than have the policy that due respect to be given to women as equal members of society who have a perfect right to campaign and protest. The police practice in Leeds seems, to an onlooker, to be that it is ok to turn a blind eye to the situation of women who may possibly be trafficked and abused without too much close scrutiny to their well being or prevent vulnerability being exploited.

How could it be any different then? Root and branch reset of integrity and impartiality seems to be needed in my view.

CharlieParley · 21/09/2020 12:37

@SorryImKnew

On what basis did the police advise Claire/Posey not to go ahead with the event if they feel within the exemption categories?
On the basis that we are currently dealing with on ongoing crisis caused by a pandemic. You mentioned this several times on the thread yourself.

During this crisis, any large gathering adds to the stress on the police. The pros and cons of holding political protests have been discussed up and down the country, in every country affected, both privately and publicly, by citizens, parties, civil rights organisations, the police and all levels of government.

Democratic countries have alighted upon an uneasy compromise that accepts the citizenry's right to free assembly in principle but limits it in practice through the use of tightly regulated exceptions (see earlier in the thread for those applicable in the UK).

The police is urging all organisers to take their protests online if possible, to make their jobs of policing the public's adherence to the Covid-based restrictions easier.

The police have however allowed various protests to go ahead unhindered, and have partially intervened in others (in addition to normal policing interventions of course). AFAIK this is the only political protest they have completely stopped.

Datun · 21/09/2020 12:39

Just in case knew is still in any doubt as to posie's goal.

After the event Kelly-Jay Keen explained that she knew was likely to be arrested, part of the reason she refused to give her details to the police was in order to have the opportunity to voice her concerns in court.

@Kazakaren

WHY WON'T YOU JUST BE KIND?' views in the last year

At least you got there in the end 👍

we should be kind to each other but I find it odd how women are always the last get the kindness.... its like kind is some kind of a pie but we aren't going to get any. So we have the most murders, domestic violence abuse, wage gap etc etc as the kindness seems to be sucked up by white males... odd
