I wonder if @HazzaTheOwl can shed any light on why it appears that a plain clothes officer was directing operations?

Zilla1 · 20/09/2020 20:21

I wonder if some enquiries of the Chief Constable, Crime Commission, MP and Leeds Mayor might elicit some information about their decision making and opinions to clarify the soundness and consistency. I don't know enough about law enforcement FoI exemptions to understand whether the advice to the police on the ground could be successfully sought.

Those arrested can probably get a huge amount of info on this via DPA subject access and pre-trial disclosure.

It really is an awesome chess move. And brave of the women to make it.

It's very stressful being a political pioneer, no matter what the scale of it.

SmudgeButt

Well I've googled and still have no idea who Kelly-Jay is. So maybe not so legend as some might think.

These days one can simply identify as "legend" and unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it.

feminist SNORKING HERE!

Another video explaining how they consulted with the police prior to today's event. They risk-assessed for covid, went equipped with masks and hand-sanitiser and were under the impression they were acting lawfully.

I really don't understand how the police can justify the arrests after the women followed the advice they were given.

Zilla1 · 20/09/2020 20:37

JamieLee, I agree though I wondered if third parties enquiring of the Chief Constable, Crime Commissioner, MP and Mayor may force people to set out their opinions and for these to be explicitly seen by some others with direct influence (Crime Commissioner/Chief Constable) and indirect oversight of sorts (MP).

HazzaTheOwl · 20/09/2020 20:42

I cannot imagine why plain clothed officers were involved if this were truly a simple Covid violation. Covid legislation appears increasingly to be a useful tool for the locking down of political activity.

@OvaHere

Amazing how many people who have no idea who Posie is have found this thread and want to point out just how much what she does doesn't matter to anyone. Grin
extraordinary! anyhoo wish I'd been there... could we organise a mumsnet outing to protest the sex tollerance zone when we are allowed to travel??
Datun · 20/09/2020 20:47

and I'm thrilled you are calling out the aggressive plainclothes man strutting about

I know!!!

Good god the optics!!!

Quaagars · 20/09/2020 20:48

So have I got this right - she was told she could be let off if she gave her details and she refused which resulted in arresting?
If so (happy to stand corrected) sounds like she wanted to get arrested in order to come across as all martyr like.

I believe they wanted to issue her with a fine which is why they wanted her details. She hadn't done anything wrong and didn't need to give her details.

And?
fatblackcatspaw · 20/09/2020 20:52

@Coyoacan

Well Posie has managed to attract some knew people to this board today, for a start. Including the one and only Harrop admirer, hahahaha.
Is Adrian's mum posting now? surely we can get her over to the darkside...
Datun · 20/09/2020 20:53

And?
Exactly 🤣

Datun · 20/09/2020 20:54

It's a brave woman who is prepared to sacrifice herself for her beliefs.

Well, Posie is kind of a genius for this sort of publicity stunt.

Think it through - what started as a small demo with 27 women at it has now turned into a brilliant publicity photo (the woman in the "Thought Crime" t-shirt being loaded into a police van by uniformed police), a possible court case with possible counter-sueing for wrongful arrest, a load of women contesting their £100 fines in court.

The video footage of the police officer repeatedly telling Posie it wasn't a political protest, but at the same time being utterly unable to say what the criteria were for something to count as a political protest is (a) hilarious in a dark sort of way and (b) chilling and (c) pretty damning if this all gets to court.

What started out as a protest which wouldn't even have made the Yorkshire Evening Post now looks more like something Janice Turner might cover in the Times.

Posie's played a blinder.

Neither do I. It's outrageous. As far as I can tell from the Liberty website SFW followed all the government guidance.
I thought the plain clothed police officer behaved in an incredibly intimidating way. When he initially approached the woman reading her speech I thought he was some random coming for a close up heckle.
Why were plain clothed police there anyway?
WYP have done themselves no favours this afternoon.

The foregone conclusion has to be piece of piss. She knows that TRAs can't help themselves.

It's the entire point. It's more Streisand than Streisand could ever be.

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 21:04

'chilling effect' is an actual concept in British law, thank god.

Indeed it is. It's an actual thing.
