Re. cost of the GRC process:

Maya Forstater has put together a report based on "evidence from the minutes of the Gender Recognition Panel User Group (obtained through a freedom of information request) and on statistics from the tribunals service."

Brief article:
medium.com/@MForstater/long-slow-demeaning-intrusive-and-distressing-or-swift-professional-and-efficient-e100f2fb41f8

Long version:
drive.google.com/file/d/1WU2ddIYVlRbMf3hEajlHHlrKL3l0zggn/view

One of the findings is that a large proportion of successful GRC applicants (60%) were fully exempt from paying fees, and a further 17% paid a reduced fee (it says 22% in the report, which doesn't quite add up, so I'm assuming it's a typo).

There is no consistent data on this, but these are the figures reported in the user group minutes for April - October 2008.

I'm really worried he's going to do this, given the views of some of the Labour front bench - Nandy, Streeting, Rayner etc

I will never forgive or forget Nandy (who prior to that I thought was really good) saying with an absolutely straight face that a male-bodied trans-identifying rapist who'd violated his bail conditions ought to be put back into a women's prison because TWAW.

Tootsweets23 · 20/09/2020 15:13

I'd like to think Biden will choose on merit not identity politics. How many trans identified judges are there in the US anyway? Any of the calibre to be on the senate? If they are RBG levels of intelligence and following the law not their own personal hobby horses then I have no issue with a trans judge.

Re KS, I would be surprised if he allows himself to be pushed by his front bench. Whatever he says on this issue I will take as his opinion not based on coercion. They all know an earthquake is about to go through the party when the EHRC report comes out, so he weirdly has a huge amount of power just now to break with the past. Up to him whether he chooses to use it, and if he doesn't I will read it that he doesn't give a shit about women's rights.

Tootsweets23 · 20/09/2020 15:14

Sorry be on the Supreme Court not the senate!

100%

@Kit19

Pledged *@endofthelinefinally* :)

KS will be desperate to avoid this if possible. He’ll be under pressure from his front bench to Wade in & I hope he’s able to resist

I know. Certain people are desperate to stop JC doing his research.
merrymouse · 20/09/2020 15:46

I hope he’s able to resist

I'm hoping, that having acted for Helen Steel during the Mclibel case, he has some appreciation that the women who oppose self ID are predominantly left wing feminists.

EwwSprouts · 20/09/2020 16:17

Fingers crossed Liz Truss speaks plainly and clearly on Wed.

KS is a bit stuffed as this is there for all to see. TWAW not once but twice & commitment to reform the EA2010.

That and all women shortlists!
Kit19 · 20/09/2020 16:52

If this turns out to be true then Wednesday is going to be an almighty bin fire of rage & we’ll be invaded by a whole load of new posters.....

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 16:57

Yup there’s going to be a lot of angry people out there and journalists writing about suicide stats and the fact that their adult children have locked themselves in the attic to cry (if they haven’t stoped crying over Harry Potter and the Twitter of Doom).

CaraDuneRedux · 20/09/2020 17:00

Harry Potter and the Twitter of Doom was really written by Daniel Radcliffe. True, dat!

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 17:03

I thought it was Hagrin / Hagrth?- sorry if that’s not right - I’ve not actually read the books (I flicked through one on holiday when I’d run out of books to read and borrowed it - I could’ve get on with it). or seen the films.

Nah, Hagrin/Hagrth's been cancelled because he revealed himself to be team JKR Grin.
SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 17:16

I can’t keep up. It’s like when DS was at nursery and Gormiti was out and Bakugun was in.

Kit19 · 20/09/2020 17:18

This is interesting! Sounds from the statement that stonewall have accepted that what has been leaked is what will happen

wow!
As a separate policy matter, the Labour Party is committed to reforming the Gender Recognition Act and the Equality Act 2010 to ensure they protect trans people. We will formulate more detailed policy to achieve that goal – whilst maintaining important safeguards and protections for all women, including vulnerable women

gardenbird48 · 20/09/2020 17:55

Unless he goes full TWAW and if so I'll never vote for him.
I’m sure KS signed a TWAW pledge when the others did but his didn’t have the ‘Hate groups’ point in the list. He’s been very quiet and if he did decide that Liz and the women are right it sounds like he will have a huge mountain to climb with his MPs and the vociferous Labour LGBTQ+ groups and I think the CLPs in many cases who are blocking women from speaking on this.

I am disappointed, not because I would have supported the Labour Party but because it does democracy no favours if we don’t have an effective opposition.

OldmanOfTheWeb3 · 20/09/2020 18:11

I don't know if there are any MtF trans out there who are qualified. Whilst technically he can nominate anyone it's a small pool of people who are actually qualified to be one of America's highest judges. Likely pick will be either Amy Coney Barrett or Barbara Lagoa. Advantage of the latter is that ID-obsessed Dems supported her previously so they'll look really petty if they try to oppose her just because Trump has nominated her. Dems tend to act like anyone Hispanic is on their side so they may have shot themselves in the foot with this.

Anyway, to bring the tangent back around to the original topic, can we spare a thought for this poor person? Without Self-ID how are they supposed to pick which sex is most advantageous to them each day?

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 20/09/2020 18:18

Excellent if true (but braced for the SNP Angry)
I don’t care what money is charged the important difference is “have to produce two reports that they have suffered from gender dysphoria”
(Actually that’s not true; I do care I still think it’s a ridiculous law that should be repealed )

TheFleegleHasLanded · 20/09/2020 20:46

Agree Gibbons I would be for repeal, but in the absence of that Maya Forstater has come up with some innovative solutions for reform. The GRA is entwined with some European court judgements (I don't have the detail with me) so repeal is not straightforward.

But Self ID being removed as a possibility (at least for this Parliament) is a victory and even though there is much still to do we should take a moment to at least relish winning this battle.
