Jk trans character and Robert Galbraith

I’ve been speaking out in support of JK on social media but there’s an avalanche of criticism of her latest Trans murderer character plus her using the name Robert Galbraith which apparently was the name of some historical anti gay figure. What do people think is the best way to counter this?

Yeah, it is a 'cis man' dressed as a woman commiting the crimes in this book. So... not a trans woman then? We are constantly told that actual transwomen don't commit crimes, and this is the line that JKR has taken in this book, the perp isn't a transwoman, so what's the problem?

CodenameVillanelle · 15/09/2020 17:40

@movingmuddle

I wonder if it was this crossdressing character that got JK into this whole debate in the first place.

She was dragged into it when she liked a couple of GC posts and the TRAs came down on her like a ton of bricks.

IIRC, she said at the time it had been a slip of the finger, and later she said she'd been researching for a book at the time.

Was it this book she was researching for? Seems likely to me.

If so, then do the TRAs only have themselves to blame for JK Rowling, the gloriously outspoken defender of women's rights? Had they not given her such a hard time for merely liking a couple of tweets, perhaps she might not have spoken out?

Delicious irony if so...

Yes it was. And it was her management team who said it was a slip of the finger, not her
TorkTorkBam · 15/09/2020 17:46

How do you counter it on social media? I wouldn't bother. Counter it in real life instead. Oh wait, nobody in adult real life froths about her being vile.

Chat irl about the weirdos obsessing about her on social media. Revel in how lovely and SENSIBLE real life people are instead. Fuck Twitter. It is a pit of fuckwittery. Fucktwittery.

You can't counter it. Though if you want to try this is a good read:. theconversation.com/why-people-believe-in-conspiracy-theories-and-how-to-change-their-minds-82514

[quote WildAboutMyPlanet]I went to Goodreads to see the reviews because people on there get advanced copies So might shed some light on the plot but....

@Mollscroll

Wind in the Willows is totally transphobic because Toad - the convicted criminal - disguises himself as a washerwoman to escape from prison. Hateful vileness among Edwardian riverbank animals.
This is how Mumsnet saves my sanity, honestly. When it feels as if the whole world has gone mad, I can log on and have a giggle over Transphobic Toad and the Riverbank Bigots, and suddenly the state of affairs doesn't seem quite so dark.

Never change, Mumsnet Grin

SunsetBeetch · 15/09/2020 19:12

I haven't used Goodreads for aaaages, but I spent a few minutes flagging the whiney wanker "reviews".

ottermadness · 15/09/2020 19:22

If mad at JK why not Disney... Mulan anyone?

testing987654321 · 15/09/2020 19:33

The good reads ones are quite amusing "not read it but don't like her opinions". They are so lame they are funny.

maxicheddar · 15/09/2020 19:39

These bloody people are awful. JK doesn't deserve such vitriol.

Further to DialSquare's post, in July 2020 another thing that never happens happened...

A bastard scumbag called Mark Brown from London was convicted of a sexual assault on an 18 year old girl while he was wearing women's clothes including a dress and silver long haired wig.

Wig and dress-wearing man guilty of student sex assault in Islington

news.met.police.uk/news/man-convicted-of-sexual-assault-407098

He was described and convicted as a male/ he and does not appear to have claimed any trans identity but to satisfy Stonewall and the TRAs we are not allowed to question or ask his gender or wonder whether he is really trans, or where on the trans spectrum he may or may not be, so we must consider that he may be trans.

What we do know for sure is that YET AGAIN, a male (who was already a convicted sex offender on multiple accounts but allowed home on licence FFS) has behaved as a sexual predator against a woman, and he committed the crime either as a male who is somewhere on the trans spectrum (and Stonewall includes cross dressing), or he is a man using women's clothing as a disguise to commit crime against women and escape detection.

Either of which are exactly what we are so concerned about happning in women's spaces, because it does happen, even though we are told it never, ever can.

I would send these links to your 'friends' OP but there are none so blind (or dangerous) as those who will not see Flowers

Winecheesesleep · 15/09/2020 19:45

I've just had the book delivered today, is the murderer being a trans person a spoiler for the end of the book? Sad

ListeningQuietly · 15/09/2020 19:46

One of my FB friends is full on frothing about how hateful JK is and how vulnerable our "trans sisters" are.

I cannot be bothered to engage with him.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/09/2020 19:57

No Wink

aliasundercover · 15/09/2020 20:46

That Guardian review linked earlier by eufycurious:

some will still consider this depiction transphobic, given Rowling’s rightly widely criticised views on trans people. It is, at best, an utterly tone-deaf decision to include an evil man who cross-dresses after months of pain among trans people and their allies

Fuck right off.
I read the Guardian every day for 30 years - nowadays I'd refuse my fish and chips if it came wrapped in a copy. Who are these fragile trans people who have had 'months of pain' because someone said something they disagreed with? If they are that delicate then 'being born in the wrong body' is the least of their problems.

GrimSisters · 15/09/2020 20:49

I'm just going to copy the text of sunshine I follow on FB called Charlie Ray, which is quite interesting

I really hate to do this to you Facebook, but today we're going to go there. To those who are mad at JK Rowling for making the villain of her new book a cross-dressing male serial killer.

Cross-dressing is a paraphilia. Completely unrelated to anything that anybody has been talking about gender, we have known for a long time that cross-dressing is a paraphilia. This means that it is a condition that men become sexually aroused because they are wearing "women's clothing". This is an understanding that we have that has absolutely nothing to do with gender identity. Further than that, it is understood in criminology that there is a type of criminal called a lust murderer. Which is quite frankly a disgusting name. This means that a paraphilia has expanded to the point where it is no longer a fantasy or sexual arousal but a desire to actually hurt women and to actually take their clothes off of them and to actually put them on.

Many serial killers kill because they have sexual paraphilias. Sexual paraphilias are known to be a part of the serial killing experience. There are tons of men known of now who were serial killers, who had the cross-dressing paraphilia.

Harden Clark The Cross-Dressing Cannibal. Russel Williams, a Canadian high-ranking colonel, would break into women's houses to take pictures of himself in their underwear. This escalated to rape and murder. Ottis Toole would dress in drag to hunt for women to murder.

Jerry Brudos, one of the killers that was featured in Mindhunters, was sexually aroused by high heels. He went on to make molds of the women's breasts so he could keep their body parts. Another killer featured in this very popular series, Richard Speck, went on to smuggle hormones into jail in order to grow breasts.

Yet another killer featured in Mindhunters was BTK. Dennis Rader "acted out sexual fetishes for voyeurism, autoerotic asphyxiation and cross-dressing; he would often spy on female neighbors while dressed in women's clothing, including women's underwear that he had stolen, and masturbate with ropes or other bindings around his arms and neck."

Doil Lane, child rapist and killer, killed child girls and stole their underwear. He said he liked to put it on.

I could go on, but everyone is obsessed with true crime and you all KNOW this already. This idea that any man who ever puts on women's clothing is "valid" and "included" instead of seeing that criminologists have known for a long time that some men who do this are incredibly sick and dangerous--is an affront to our critical thinking skills. Which one is which? Just trans, or sexual paraphilia??? Welcome to the world of a woman. You don't know which man is dangerous from the outside. All you can do is look for patterns and try to protect yourself.

Criminologists know that cross-dressing is a sexual paraphilia. If this bothers you, you don't have to support the men who cross-dress as a sexual fetish. You can support the men who just want to wear dresses because they think they look cute. But don't come for an author who is clear on reality.

This shit is known and studied. It exists and it is a real thing. Liberals want women to just accept any man who wears women's clothing. My message is different: understand reality and protect yourself. Is every cross-dresser a serial killer? No. But there are many serial killers who cross-dressed, and cross-dressing was not a benign part of the process. It was one of the intrinsic motivations.

SunsetBeetch · 15/09/2020 21:02

That popped up in my FB feed too GrimSisters - it's excellent.

If anyone has the stomach for it, a couple of terven have made twitter threads listing killers who have been into cross dressing (the first is literally just a list - of 66 men).

This one goes into more detail:

Maerchentante · 15/09/2020 21:08

What do the TRAs say about the guys who wore Niqabs a few years ago and robbed some stuff in Selfridge's? Where is their outrage about that?

They only shout at women, but she cannot be cancelled.

I bought my book earlier in a local, independent book shop and got the last copy they had on the shelf. The woman who sold it to me said that she'd heard that there was some controversy and she couldn't understand all the fuss and why JKR got so much vitriol.

If any of the perpetually offended have really bought and read the whole book today, then I'd be happy to talk to them, otherwise just stfu. I'm a quick reader, who read the 7th HP in just under eight hours in English, which isn't my native language, but even if I had had the whole day off and had done nothing but reading, I doubt I'd have finished the book today.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/09/2020 21:10

What a bunch of wankers.

Grin they really are.. singular, aren't they.

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/09/2020 21:11

This is not a spoiler - but she has used the word sex ! Shock
I wonder how the TRA's will cope with that

Winecheesesleep · 15/09/2020 22:43

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine thanks! I'm really looking forward to delving into it Smile

Shantotto · 16/09/2020 08:11

If you’re going to put a spoiler at least put some space between you saying ‘spoiler’ and then writing what it is for goodness sake! It was right next to it!

MillyMollyFarmer · 16/09/2020 08:32

Apart from everything everyone has said, read the book, Nick Cohens review too.... I would say: trans people are just like everyone else! Nobody accuses crime writers of saying all men are murderers? Trans people aren’t a sacred caste, they’re not a special group who are all super nice and non-criminal.
