Who has abortions? According to Marie Stopes Australia, it’s men... and “people”

A Marie Stopes Australia post on Facebook is attracting a bit of attention... 5 pictures, the first one just a graphic that says “Who has abortions?”. The next four slides are-

-Men with uteruses
-People who already have children
-People with a wanted pregnancy
-People who use contraception

Just shy of 800 comments... apparently GC comments were being deleted left right and centre but MSA have updated to say they are no longer “moderating” the discussion.

www.facebook.com/810047862456121/posts/3095104533950431/?extid=sleFTcNldQcFBsya&d=n

This is how they’ve captioned the post...

EDIT: TRIGGER WARNING

Unfortunately this post has attracted discriminatory and hateful comments that are simply unacceptable. As we are a very small team managing this page, we don’t feel we’re able to moderate the comment section any longer.

Our intention was never to erase women and their experiences, instead, we are aiming to highlight the stories that aren’t often told. There are many, many stories and tonight’s post was just a small sample.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this post 💙

Abortion is a sexual and reproductive health service that many people may access, and it’s important that we destigmatise those who may decide to seek an abortion.

From men with uteruses, to people who already have children - the list of people who may have abortions is endless.

Abortion is healthcare, and we will continue to help those who seek abortions access them safely.

Slide 3: People who already have children. An illustration of 2 people looking to their left. The 1st person has brown hair styled into a plait, gold hoop earrings and a yellow t-shirt. The 2nd person has short brown hair and is wearing a light green collared shirt under a dark green jumper.
Slide 4: People with a wanted pregnancy. An illustration of 2 people looking at each other. The first person has blonde hair styled into a pony tail, is wearing glasses and a light blue collared shirt under a maroon jumper. The 2nd person has black hair in a bun, wearing a green necklace with a blue pendant and a white shirt.
Slide 5: People who use contraception. An illustration of a person with short black hair wearing gold hoop earrings and a maroon turtleneck shirt. They are looking at their cup of tea. There is steam coming out of the yellow cup.

First the tampon company survey where 'woman' wasn't an option on the drop-down list, but man was (men have periods, women clearly don't) and now this.

I used to think GC people were maybe overreacting a bit when they said women were being erased. I now know they weren't.

Woman is now a taboo word.

This has to stop.

BlackWaveComing · 13/09/2020 22:13

The FB pushback was heartening, but the willingness of an abortion provider to erase their client exclusively female client base in favour of men is horrifying.

Minds so open their brains fell out.

OhHolyJesus · 13/09/2020 22:14

The FB OP remains and the ratio is strong, it will probably be removed at some point so if someone wants to send feedback directly the email is

[email protected]

FWIW the Marie Stopes International FB page uses the word women, so maybe Australia is just having a moment of madness after that YEP plasticine penis incident...

BlackWaveComing · 13/09/2020 22:24

One of the fucking annoying things is that in their idiocy, they fail to tell stories that might actually ease the worries of women accessing their services.

For example, I had a surgical termination while still breastfeeding a toddler. I was extremely worried about revealing this. It was part of why I had no sedation. Apparently, it's so common, the provider had a stamp - breastfeeding - so staff were aware. I felt so comforted that other breastfeeding mothers had been there before me, in numbers enough to require a stamp! I felt less lonely and stigmatized.

To me, telling stories like that would be true inclusion.

But no, meeting female needs is so last century for these orgs.

BlueJay99 · 13/09/2020 22:28

Am I supposed to be ashamed of being a woman now? Can I still say I am a woman? Does it not mean anything, count for anything.
Should I only whisper it.

The GC comments are astounding though! I’ve followed this debate for some time and this was impressive

SoManyActivities · 13/09/2020 22:49

Yes, the comments on that FB post are really heartening. Women have had enough of this.

Emmmie · 13/09/2020 23:29

The link appears to be broken 🤷🏻‍♀️

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 13/09/2020 23:37

They've just posted this. Good. www.facebook.com/810047862456121/posts/3097013523759532/

Emmmie · 13/09/2020 23:41

Yes!

ArabellaScott · 13/09/2020 23:43

I should fucking well think so.

ArabellaScott · 13/09/2020 23:45

'We apologise wholeheartedly and unreservedly for not including women in our post about people who have abortions.'

2020, this is where we are.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 13/09/2020 23:46

@ArabellaScott

'We apologise wholeheartedly and unreservedly for not including women in our post about people who have abortions.'

2020, this is where we are.

It's astounding isn't it?
DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 13/09/2020 23:55

“For not including women”; in a post from a service which is only for women. 🤦🏽‍♀️

But at least it is an apology.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2020 23:59

Of course, their apology is now getting criticism for caving in to 'terfy Karens' Hmmand removing their 'inclusive' message. By people missing the point that it wasn't 'inclusive'.
Let's see if they can manage to come up with something better, inclusive of all who may need their services.

FloralBunting · 14/09/2020 00:02

We are very sorry that we couldn't get away with our foolishness by a bit of mealy mouthed wokewaffle and have taken an astonishingly long time to register that women are indeed the only people who have abortions, so we're sorry for completely neglecting to mention them in our original post and subsequent comments.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 14/09/2020 00:03

Everyone who objected were apparently 'Terfy Karens' according to one pissed off misogynist. I've not seen that particular compound insult before, but then I'm mainly on twitter.

TheDragQueen · 14/09/2020 00:04

It’s a shit apology and even then had to be dragged out of them.

FloralBunting · 14/09/2020 00:04

fucking wokesters whinging that an abortion provider is treating women with the teensiest modicum of respect. FTFOAFOSM you hideous misogynists.

StrangeLookingParasite · 14/09/2020 02:05

At least two screeching wokebros in the comments. They look ridiculous.

Appology removed (I think).

Emmmie · 14/09/2020 05:04

StrangeLookingParasite
Yup!

EdgeOfACoin · 14/09/2020 05:16

@Emmmie

Appology removed (I think).
Appears so.

They are utterly, utterly pathetic.
