calling once more for a more nuanced debate around gender identity and women's rights. It's here https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/statement-from-j-k-rowling-regarding-the-robert-f-kennedy-human-rights-ripple-of-hope-award/.

Thanks JKR

Holy hell turns out I was over estimating Mermaids’ integrity ShockHmm

Datun · 28/08/2020 23:10

@BewaretheIckabog

I’m sure that what is hurting gender questioning children is being told people like JK hate them and deny their existence. This is what the TRAs are telling them and not what is being said.
Indeed.

I wonder if jK Rowling can legally demand to know exactly what mermaids is referring to.

SoManyActivities · 28/08/2020 23:16

This is from The Samaritans 'Guidance in reporting on youth suicide and suicide clusters':

Avoid speculation around the causes of a young
person’s suicide. For example, when a suicide is
reported and bullying is cited as the cause, this
could affect other young people experiencing
bullying who may be feeling hopeless about their
own situation. Making direct links about causes
oversimplifies suicide. Publishing lots of photographs,
outpourings of grief or messages about holding
people to account for a death, for example directed
at bullies, can increase the likelihood of other young
people identifying with the person who has died
and could lead to suicide contagion.

What are Mermaids thinking publishing this statement?!

Datun · 28/08/2020 23:17

Allison Bailey:

1/ This is shocking & disgraceful.
@Mermaids_Gender
accusing
@jk_rowling
of causing child suicide attempts. This is a red alarm, child safeguarding emergency. Mental ill-health leads to children experiencing suicidal ideation.

2/ adult concerns about trans activism cannot conceivably be a risk to children‘s mental health, such as to cause suicidal feelings, unless they are being manipulated by the adults around them, planting & then reinforcing that message.

3/
@Mermaids_Gender
in an attempt to defend itself, appears to be using children‘s vulnerability for it’s own political purposes, with scant regard for either their welfare or the welfare of an adult woman who has done nothing to deserve such a truly wicked & manipulative charge

4/
@trussliz
if an adult parent used & maniuplated a child in this way, social services would be called immediately. No organisation tasked with caring for children should be allowed to deploy suicide in such a nakedly offensive way. This is an emergency. This cannot be ignored.

It's possible they have no idea what they are talking about, or how to handle it. Susie green is an IT consultant, not a mental health professional.
yourhairiswinterfire · 28/08/2020 23:21

They need pulling up on it pronto, and they deserve to be shamed in the media for what they've done.

ItsLateHumpty · 28/08/2020 23:37

OMG! Radio Times Shock I hope this is a very expensive ‘mistake’ for them.

twitter.com/WeAreLe30956108/status/1299382319489388544

See screen shot! Just wow. From the (now removed) article:

"In recent months, all manner of problematic elements have been highlighted in Rowling’s back catalogue, including her tendency to equate ugliness and fatness with evil, the anti-semitic stereotypes embodied by the goblins of Gringotts, and the Harry Potter series’ tepid engagement with the issue of chattel slavery. While these are all issues distinctly separate from transgender rights, it has been suggested that perhaps they are emblematic of a lack of interest on Rowling’s part in dismantling systems of oppression.”

Screen capture of @RadioTimes accusing @jk_rowling of bigotry, anti-Semitism and lukewarm feelings about chattel slavery. All already deleted. Hope she sues

Thread about the Radio Times article.

There's an archive link on there to the original article.

ItsLateHumpty · 28/08/2020 23:58

Ah thanks OldCrone I hadn’t been on the main FWR boards, and was so outraged at this shite I posted without checking.

ItsLateHumpty · 29/08/2020 00:09

The spin has already started - apparently RFKHR stripped her of the award akshally!

And hahahahaha delusion is strong in this one!

An RFK employee is claiming on twitter that they had already stripped her of the award when she gave it back.

So we're supposed to believe that JKR put out her tweets and statement at the start of June and then Kerry Kennedy writes her statement at the start of August (with no mention of taking back the award) that they were going to strip the award less than a month later. Surely if you were going to strip the award or even were thinking of doing so, you would mention that in your blog earlier in the month. Am I wrong or does that timeline seem weird to anyone else?

Jinx @ItsLateHumpty

yourhairiswinterfire · 29/08/2020 00:33

Ha, they wish. They just don't like that JKR has more class in her little finger than the whole lot of them put together.

Even with death threats, rape threats, and porn tweeted at children on her timeline, she's still been more dignified than they'll ever manage to be.

She's too powerful to cancel. And they fucking hate it.

TheHeartbeat · 29/08/2020 02:07

Very well played sending that award back.

All the headlines, local and foreign, said she send it back basically having her take control of the narrative just like that!

Very well played. Seeing Kennedy try to spin it back around on Twitter really confirms their publicity stunt backfired wonderfully. Grin

NotBadConsidering · 29/08/2020 05:12

www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-53944773

[Kennedy] went on to say the organisation categorically rejected Rowling's view that a person's sex is the one they were assigned at birth.
"The science is clear and conclusive: Sex is not binary," she wrote.

I mean how can you deal with this sort of stupidity? No wonder Rowling returned the award, it’s run by a complete imbecile.

Since I posted this, the article has been amended and this batshit statement has been removed. I wonder why? Hmm
SophocIestheFox · 29/08/2020 06:08

Oh you’d already stripped her of the award? Did ye, aye? 🤣

The state of these idiots- they only gave her the award to get a bit of her star power and global reach reflected onto themselves.

I see Bill Clinton is a previous recipient of the Ripple of Hope award. Good thing the same standards of behaviour aren’t applied to men accused of actually sexually assaulting women, eh, or you’d definitely have to take his back, too!

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2020 06:26

@PublicServiceArse

I realise this is pretty important (to some people) but I’m a bit Hmm at the need for an earlier poster to go full on archive this, save that. It seems unhinged. Honestly no one cares enough to go back to 2019 and delete stuff to try and trick you.
But already, pieces are being edited and deleted...
boatyardblues · 29/08/2020 07:25

What’s happened to Jane Claire Jones’ tweets with Kerry Kennedy’s annotated speech? I had them bookmarked for later perusal & they’ve gone. Angry

merrymouse · 29/08/2020 07:44

from this, I understand that JKR believes your sex at birth is the most important determinant of gender',

How can an organisation that theoretically promotes human rights be so dense on the subject of human rights?

Nobody suffers discrimination because of their internal sense of their own gender. They suffer discrimination because gender is imposed upon them, regardless of who they feel they are.

Before full equal suffrage in the U.K. in 1928 nobody got to vote because they didn’t feel feminine.

No woman can control her fertility by simply opting out of being female.

Going on about sex being non binary is completely irrelevant. Even if it were scientifically coherent, it wouldn’t stop discrimination against ‘big gamete people’.

I believe JCJ moved her notes to her blog.

Andrew Doyle talking a lot of common sense about this story on the Sky News paper review at 7.45am today - that will have reached a big audience.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 29/08/2020 08:19

I love that JCJ has posted screenshots that shows the depth of her frustration on this. So much more powerful than a tidy, typed narrative.

You can feel her anger at the stupidity and injustice of it all, can see the eye-rolling-what-the-fuck-even-is-this twisted narrative and can hear her banging the table in rage. Good on her.

Stressing · 29/08/2020 08:33

What concerns me though is that JK is not a politician and dealing with backlash in this level would never have been part of her plan. It's taking her away from her true path and I worry could end up consuming her. You have to be hard as nails for this to eat away at you. Whenever she opens her mouth what she says is now twisted. If a little bit of self doubt starts to creep in then that could have a catastrophic effect on her self esteem. What a horrible world we live in where identity politics can set of a social media world war three.
