calling once more for a more nuanced debate around gender identity and women's rights. It's here https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/statement-from-j-k-rowling-regarding-the-robert-f-kennedy-human-rights-ripple-of-hope-award/.

Thanks JKR

Anyone involved with Mermaids should be seriously worried about the future investigations around their unethical practices. Poor bloody kids...

SoManyActivities · 28/08/2020 20:29

I think that is really fucking low actually - blaming JKR specifically for those children self harming. There is no level of emotional manipulation that they will not stoop to in order to try and keep going.

moptophairshop · 28/08/2020 20:30

I feel quite sick reading through Mermaids statement. How dare they sink to such depths of emotional blackmail - and the sheer disregard of safeguarding when attributing suicide attempts to one specific event. What would Samaritans say about their that? Don't they talk about social contagion and the responsibility of media outlets when covering suicide? Working with such vulnerable children is challenging and Mermaids should have systems to refer children who they think may be at risk of significant harm.
I was truly hoping to gain some insight into their methods from their response. Just an inkling of reassurance that they take a rounded approach when supporting children and families. But no, instead they reiterate their belief that children know their own identities and should be followed without arbitration from other supporting professionals. So basically, exactly what JKR has described as the worrying approach that so many professionals fear is causing harm to many.
To end the message with a call to listen to trans people and their families- arghh! That's exactly what JKR talks about in her statement! It is because she has listened to so many voices that she said what she did.

ArabellaScott · 28/08/2020 20:31

'there have been cases of self-harm and even attempted suicide following J.K.Rowling’s statements and the public response on social media and in the press. Surely this must cause us all to pause and question the way young trans lives are being debated in public.'

JFC. That is blaming JKR's statements directly for self harm and suicide attempts. Do Mermaids not employ lawyers? You'd think someone would have advised them how libellous, dangerous, irresponsible and bloody stupid that is.

yourhairiswinterfire · 28/08/2020 20:36

Is there anyone at all we could complain to, to ask to condemn Mermaids for their blatant disregard of safeguarding?

ArabellaScott · 28/08/2020 20:38

Charity Commission?

Kit19 · 28/08/2020 20:39

I know we’ve talked in the past that mermaids are the new Kids Company & they really are

Kids company weaponised suicide in an attempt to deflect attention & avoid engaging with factual arguments

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34535954

It didn’t work for them and it won’t work fir mermaids. It’s so utterly and appallingly low of them to behave like this

‘We didn’t want to say but look what you have us do!!!!!!!’

MichelleofzeResistance · 28/08/2020 20:44

To end the message with a call to listen to trans people

But not Kiera Bell. Or Debbie Hayton. Or Miranda Yardley. Or any of the other trans people who have spoken up about the many problems with this ideology. They show no respect or listening to those trans people at all, particularly those detransitioning.

Which demonstrates clearly, it's the ideology being served rather than the full demographic.

Lamahaha · 28/08/2020 20:47

apologies if the Mail link has already been posted:

SoManyActivities · 28/08/2020 20:54

Also, in what other arena would

we have told these children this massive lie and if the whole world doesn't collude in that lie, even at the expense of their own rights, these kids are gonna kill themselves

Be in any way acceptable?

SophocIestheFox · 28/08/2020 21:08

Bloody hell, that’s a new low for mermaids.

Look what you made me do, indeed.

Kit19 · 28/08/2020 21:16

It’s panic coms

If you’re resorting to ‘CHILDREN WILL KILL THEMSELVES AND ITS ALL YOUR FAULT’ then just maybe you need to think about your whole raisin d’etre

HPFA · 28/08/2020 21:59

By a strange coincidence the Mermaids thing popped up on my timeline as the same time a Twitter user was declaring that Laura Pidcock (a Labour NEC candidate) wanted to take away trans people's lives. When I asked whether LP was in fact a supporter of execution for trans people I got the whole suicide thing and soon was being told I was a murderer myself.

I can't think of any political debate where opponents have weaponized suicide in this way so that any disagreement was equivalent to murder.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2020 22:09

That horrific Mermaids response archived:

archive.li/ksqlk

I cannot believe that they say Rowling is directly responsible for children self harming and for attempting suicide.

backaftera2yearbreak · 28/08/2020 22:16

😲

I’m not sure how else to respond to that statement. Can you imagine if someone accused Mermaids of making them suicidal. I’m sure the statement would read people with suicidal ideation feel this way for a multitude of reasons. I’m actually quite shocked by that statement!

Justhadathought · 28/08/2020 22:26

These children need honesty, not false expectations. That's what's causing the damage. They're going to grow up unable to cope with the harsh realities of the real world if this continues. Emotionally stunted sad

The Coddling of the American Mind: How good intentions & bad ideas are setting up a generation for failure. Worth reading.

Stressing · 28/08/2020 22:30

I'm worried about JK. She is getting a hammering from so many angles, there's only so much she'll be able to take before she gets worn down. At some point she might just withdraw.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2020 22:43

@Stressing

I'm worried about JK. She is getting a hammering from so many angles, there's only so much she'll be able to take before she gets worn down. At some point she might just withdraw.
But she's getting a lot of support too - the communications she's mentioned (particularly detransitioners) not to mention the vast majority of comments on newspaper articles it seems.
highame · 28/08/2020 22:49

I do not imagine JKR is having to look at that stuff. She has people and they're doing the looking.

She has a huge fan base and knows there is a lot of support, not just any old support, but world wide support and her charity work. Also friends in high places

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2020 22:52

I'm not sure how much longer this will be going on either. That attack on JK Rowling by Mermaids is so egregious that is seems they have gone all in, nothing to lose. I'm feeling optimistic tonight, and there's a lot of things going to come together soon, I think Mermaids can see that they are not going to be around much longer.

dolorsit · 28/08/2020 22:56

Wasn't somebody else accused of being responsible for suicides and whoever made the accusation had to retract?

BlackWaveComing · 28/08/2020 22:58

Mermaids needs to be shut down.

Anyone who has spent even 10 minutes googling 'responsible reporting of suicide and self harm' would know you NEVER blame single factors. They are utterly irresponsible in this as in so much.

Of course, I'm pretty sure they're lying.

TheFleegleHasLanded · 28/08/2020 22:59

That would be Helen Belcher who accused Janice Turner dolorsit.

IPSO found in Janice’s favour but Belcher didn’t apologise. Belcher is of course someone who seems to have a rather powerful influence over Ed Davey and the Lib Dems. Very odd.

BewaretheIckabog · 28/08/2020 23:00

I’m sure that what is hurting gender questioning children is being told people like JK hate them and deny their existence. This is what the TRAs are telling them and not what is being said.
