Whilst there are lots of good thing in here (the reversing of the ban on trans people in the military, for example), there is also this:

"Guaranteeing transgender students have access to facilities based on their gender identity. On his first day in office, Biden will reinstate the Obama-Biden guidance revoked by the Trump-Pence Administration, which will restore transgender students’ access to sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms in accordance with their gender identity. He will direct his Department of Education to vigorously enforce and investigate violations of transgender students’ civil rights."

How he squares this with his pledges regarding women's rights, I do not know. I could scream!

How many other posters on this thread are registered US voters?

HelloToMyKitty · 21/08/2020 22:12

I would be interested to know if America has a ‘shy Trump voter’ phenomenon

Reagan voters were like this from what I’ve heard. Not all that farfetched (my family however are very proud Trump voters 😅). I would consider voting Trump if the rioting moves closer to home, but still plan on remaining apathetic.

SunsetBeetch · 21/08/2020 23:18

*He also said:

"By the way, what you all know but most people don't know, unlike the African American community with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community with incredibly different attitudes about different things. You go to Florida, you find a very different attitude about immigration in certain places than you do when you're in Arizona. So it's a very different, a very diverse community,"*

Holy shit.

You know, I absolutely know what he means about the Hispanic community - their voting patters as a group are more varied. But man, what a way to say it!

Its sad to watch the Democrats tell us that Joe Biden is going to save the US - in 2008 he wasn't good enough, in 2016 he wasn't good enough, but somehow, 12 years later as the world burns around us all, Joe is the man.

I watch all this in Ireland where we have a 100% Democrat supporting media - honestly, none of them saw the Trump victory (I did as I watch US news as well as Irish and read US newspapers online) but even I am shocked at how the Democrats have handed this to Trump.

Are they trying to tell us, that in the biggest economy in the world, with a global reach of ideas, the best they could muster to challenge Trump is Biden? Was there no one, male or female, under 65, who could step up? Has the party been so hollowed out post Obama that there is no one under 65 left????

And then to cap it all, they tried to appeal to the sceptics by adding Kamala Harris?

How is having a misogynist and a 'touchy-feely" guy running for president anything other than a sign that feminism does not exist in any meaningful way in the US.

I spent all my college summers there and hoped to live there - I did not get a visa and life happened. Now DD wants to go there to study but the last 9 months have made her reassess her views. I am sure she is not the only one.

Thing is, registered Democrats literally voted for the guy so you can’t exactly blame the DNC for this. I thought 2016 Warren would have been the right person (Clinton wouldn’t have accepted her running 🙄) but 2020 Warren went too far left and made herself unpalatable to the general public imo.

Annasgirl · 22/08/2020 15:35

@HelloToMyKitty - yes I realise the system is very poor. I really liked the Beto O'Rourke guy at first (probably because he was youngish, handsome and part Irish) but he disappeared quickly.

I wonder why someone like Andrew Cuomo never ran, or someone like O'Malley in Boston never got traction. I really think the "stars" like Sanders and Warren are, like Corbyn, unelectable. They need a MOR centrist who is younger than Biden - where is that person and why were they not picked as VP?

And I am not sure that a woman would be elected in the US - they are, like Ireland, very misogynistic and anti-women at heart and women in the US have never really challenged this (look at maternity rights for instance).

ListeningQuietly · 22/08/2020 15:52

I find the multiple posters trying to discourage people from voting for Biden very interesting

its rather like the campaign that Cambridge Analytica ran in Guyana

lowered turnout for Biden plays right into Trumps hands

HelloToMyKitty · 22/08/2020 16:03

I kind of disagree. But I do think it would be far easier for a conservative woman to win. Kristi Noem (South Dakota governor) has been getting good buzz on the GOP side, her or Nikki Haley would have a good shot.

HelloToMyKitty · 22/08/2020 16:27

Yeah, ok. Sounds a bit like a conspiracy theory to me. I mean, if you want to influence the US vote, Mumsnet isn’t really the place to go 😂

@ListeningQuietly - yes of course, I, who have posted thousands of times over many years on everything from style to AIBU to relationships to feminism to housekeeping, am a bot employed by the Russians Hmm.

You do realise that people like you are the reason the Democrats keep losing, the reason Labour keep losing in the UK and the reason the right wing are winning all over the place - it is not because the world has suddenly become right wing, it is that the ordinary Jo and Josephine are sick and tired of Woke Intelligensia telling them that they are stupid.

But keep right on going - I have no skin in this game, as I said my DC will not be moving there now so I am just a remote bystander. But it saddens me to see the way this has all played out and all of these people have thrown women and girls and black people under a bus.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 22/08/2020 17:14

I'm so glad I don't live in the US. Here I've become a single issue voter - whoever will stand up for sex based rights over TRA demands gets my vote. That means having to grit my teeth and vote Tory, I can do that. Never thought I would, but Labour and Lib Dem have made their contempt for women and girls clear. But in the US? I could never vote Trump, and the Dems are intent on throwing women and girls under the trans bus. I think I'd just not vote, but that's not an easy choice either given the utter state of things.

When are the left going to realise that going further left isn't going to win back the reluctant middle ground voters? Pandering to the ideologically pure on Twitter translates to lost votes in the real world. The pattern has been repeatedly proven. And yet they carry on and then can't understand why they lose.

MrsSteveMcDonald · 22/08/2020 17:27

Going back to trans people in the military, we are constantly told that they are so fragile that misgendering will lead to suicide. How is it then that they are also considered mentally strong enough to cope on the front line in a wartime situation?

ListeningQuietly · 22/08/2020 17:35

Biden is - by American standards- centre Left
but many of the policies he embraces are what the UK would call right of centre.

Womens' rights in the USA are an utter shambles
using TWAW as a reason to vote for right wingers helps the right
not women

I am hoping that Biden and Harris focus on the really important stuff for women

  • maternity pay
  • ante natal care
  • general health care
  • contraception
  • nursery care
  • abortion rights
  • employment rights
merrymouse · 22/08/2020 18:51

I don't think many people think Biden is going to 'save the US'.

They just think he isn't a narcissistic con man who has just suggested that the FDA is trying to sabotage the vaccine trials.

'Woke' doesn't really come into it.

Freespeecher · 22/08/2020 19:03

Maybe things will be better with a new slate of candidates in 2024.

‘using TWAW as a reason to vote for right wingers helps the right

I think you’re misreading the purpose of a lot of the posts on this thread.

I can’t see anyone here saying or even implying ‘Biden thinks twaw so vote Trump, people!’
It’s more ‘oh shit, are the Democrats going to fuck this up when they could and should win this election?’

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 22/08/2020 19:14

Indeed.

ListeningQuietly · 22/08/2020 19:18

I have to hope that the vast majority of registered female voters in the USA care far more about the lower tiers of the Maslow pyramid
and will shrug at TWAW
to get Trump out

Folks in California are rather more worried about climate change induced fires burning down their communities
and the Redwood forest where their parents' ashes are scattered
than what people identify as

merrymouse · 22/08/2020 19:25

It's not clear that trans issues have a very high profile in the US.

They don't seem to be discussed on e.g. the View.

Abortion and gun rights seem to loom far larger.

HelloToMyKitty · 22/08/2020 21:19

Or the basics of keeping the lights on, which California has been unable to do several
times in the past week. The state government is such a shit show.

ListeningQuietly · 22/08/2020 21:22

read the bit I lined out and then sod off with the crassness

Keeping the lights on will not change the dropping water table
which is entirely down to lack of snowpack in the Sierra
and federal water use permits

You are very mistaken to think that female voters in the US have the same kind of priorities that ones in the U.K. do. An awful lot of American women are very anti-abortion and will reliably vote along those lines.

Because of this wedge issue, you can’t rely on women voting as a bloc. It is what it is but this point often gets overlooked in foreign media.

ListeningQuietly · 22/08/2020 21:32

myKitty
The anti abortion women are where they are

my big concern was that threads like this were being used to split GC women off from voting

but Roe v Wade is so much bigger than TWAW
as is maternity pay
as is health care
as is contraception access

every person who can vote should vote
and due to Trumps vile interference with the USPS
they need to vote early
