Hi everyone, I've been trying to screenshot all of the celeb Mermaids endorsements before they are deleted but I'm sure there are some I've missed so I was wondering if you could help me out.

Here are the list of celebs and organisations I've screenshotted (I've got a lot more than this but I'm excluding the minor/random celebs and organisations):

Emma Watson
Munroe Bergdorf
Liberty
Princes Trust
Dr Rang Singh
Jade Thirlwall (Little Mix)
Lorraine Kelly
Aon
Barclays
DMW Group
John Barrowman
Jameela Jamil
Duncan James
Sam Smith
Owen Jones
Starbucks (hard for them to delete that one!)
Channel 4
Canadian High Commission

Have I missed any obvious big names? I don't seem to have Josie Long saved anywhere

Does anybody know why the celebs are dropping their support? Curious.

Datun · 12/08/2020 20:35

There are a lot of people on that list who disagree with feminists, gender critical people, and those highlighting safeguarding.

Personally, I have been concerned about the push to medicalise minors for the best part of five years. Largely due to the information I have read from other worried women/parents.

I'm entirely happy to highlight those who have disagreed.

I'm more than happy to hear their reasons, too, of course.

In fact, I'd love to hear it.

For me it's about highlighting how dangerous it is to mindlessly throw your support behind a cause or charity

Yes. It always reminds me of the ‘cake’ and ‘nonce sense’ spoofs on ‘The Day Today’: some people are so eager to raise their public profile by publicly endorsing what they assume to be a good cause that they don’t pause for a second to engage in any element of critical thinking or basic research.

It’s apparently more important to be seen to be doing the media-validated ‘right thing’, rather than actually thinking about what might be the right thing.

Re. the "are we stooping to the same tactics as the TRAs?" question, I'd draw a distinction between individuals being blithering idiots on their own time on their private twitter accounts, versus insitutions and politicians.

So the people I want held to account are people like the NHS, BBC, various police forces, local authorities (and their education departments), schools, politicians like Mhairi Black. Safeguarding and avoiding a Kids' Company scandal or worse by doing due diligence should be top of their list of priorities - and all the evidence was there for them to see (Mermaids' founder taking her child to Thailand for surgery which was illegal here, continuing to recommend the Webberlys' online Spanish practice after they'd been disciplined by the GMC over here and one had been struck off, parroting the line that puberty blockers were harmless and reversible when the evidence was there in the scientific literature for everyone to see, encouraging children to contact them behind their parents' backs).

Ms/Mr Random Sleb on twatter spouting shite because they're a pillock - well, that's a bit "Dog bites man", isn't it? Too commonplace to be of any note. And also (for me) under the heading of "opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one." People as individuals should be free to spout shite. It's only when they wield power that their opinions become of public interest, and that they need to be held to account for the consequences of the shite they spout.

(I quite agree with Diana about who should be held to account but adding the above for the log).

BewaretheIckabog · 12/08/2020 22:55

I am completely against cancel culture and found it troubling and Orwellian, when Owen Jones said he was keeping account of how people thought and making a list. I found it chilling.

However, many are quick to enjoy basking in the cause celebre and milking it. It would be great if going forward, both corporations and media personalities applied critical thinking and researched what they were advocating.

Witch hunts and silencing are not the way forward. Naming names who have enthusiastically jumped on a bandwagon is not the same thing; no one is censuring or asking for them to be cancelled.

What I hope is thatsome people, particularly those in the public eye, or those with impressionable followers will realise how dangerous it is to support issues blindly and not dig a little deeper.

twoHopes · 12/08/2020 23:05

I agree with many of the comments here, particularly around focusing on the politicians and institutions over random celebrities (especially minor ones).

It's a thin line between holding people to account for supporting something very harmful and participating in cancel culture. I would never want anyone to lose their jobs or face online abuse, I just want the general public to be able to look back at the Mermaids story and learn from it.

Thanks to everyone for chipping in with your suggestions, I'm very happy to wrap this up here. Thanks also for sharing the tweets from Julie Bindel and Suzanne Moore, I'm sure they could do this story justice.

I dont think you should...

I agree completely with diana that organisations bear Responsibility here, but...i also think there is a lot to be said for people like influencers, politicians, actors etc To be open

People follow them, they Listen to them, retweet them etc..its not fair at all that ‘JKR Is wrong Lets disown her, post against her, call her dreadful names‘ stands without the breath of an apology or a ‘sorry i was wrong’

Dont give a shit about cancelling these people but I don’t think you should get to slag people off and call them terfs And then just skulk in the fucking shadows

Fucking woman up say youve made a mistake and move the fuck on

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 12/08/2020 23:15

There appears to be slightly too many fucks there 😳

But to be fair

I don’t give a fuck 😀

I apologise when I’m wrong (yes i do dd!!) i dont think its bad to hold others up to the really really low bar ive set myself

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 12/08/2020 23:16

That’s pretty much what beware said

But with less fucks

BewaretheIckabog · 12/08/2020 23:47

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer

Never underestimate the power of the f word.

The fucking fucker’s fucking fucked. A great sentence for explaining grammar!

OldCrone · 13/08/2020 01:00

continuing to recommend the Webberlys' online Spanish practice after they'd been disciplined by the GMC over here and one had been struck off

Neither of them have been struck off, but they are both suspended, so are not allowed to practise in the UK. (I think it's important to get these sort of facts right)

BertBox · 13/08/2020 01:18

Emma Bunton (if we're still adding names.

MrsToddsShortcut · 13/08/2020 01:59

It was Susie Green who posted about Jackie Green being best friends with an officer from West Yorkshire Police (who are the force who drove halfway across the country to interview Posie Parker, because apparently there's no crime in W Yorkshire)

Also Russell Tovey was originally slated to appear at DigiFest but in his defence, he seems to have pulled out as his name disappeared a week or so beforehand. This should be noted, as clearly either he or someone he knows, did some due diligence)

Ruth Hunt is a trustee of Shelter.

highame · 13/08/2020 07:58

@twoHopes I don't think you should quit either. Personally, I was a bit taken aback by the 'zealot' like pile on. Once we all take a few deep breaths, it becomes clear that this information might be necessary in the future.

My hope is that it wont be and that organisations will recognise, admit mistakes and start to review their funding and supporting without looking for the next Wow, that's cool, lets fund that one.

twoHopes · 13/08/2020 08:10

Thanks. Well my plan is to package this information up and email it to someone who can make use of it. Maybe Suzanne Moore or Julie Bindel are good targets given their tweets and links to the mainstream press.

My comment about wrapping it up was more to say that we've probably got a sufficiently long list now. Unless we're missing any big names then I think this is good enough evidence of the level of corporate/institutional/celebrity backing of Mermaids.

OP posts:
OhHolyJesus · 13/08/2020 08:20

I think there is a difference between some well known names adding their support/jumping on the bandwagon, or actively campaigning for them. I didn't know Emma Bunton supported that JJ did because she's so much more active in her support.

Also there's a big difference between some singers or actors supporting them compared to government departments, the NHS, prominent decision makers (just a thought, has Perm Sec for Ed Jonathan Slater ever supported Mermaids?).

I think you should carry on OP but there's a great list here and there must be more people you could send it to.
