Hi everyone, I've been trying to screenshot all of the celeb Mermaids endorsements before they are deleted but I'm sure there are some I've missed so I was wondering if you could help me out.

Here are the list of celebs and organisations I've screenshotted (I've got a lot more than this but I'm excluding the minor/random celebs and organisations):

Emma Watson
Munroe Bergdorf
Liberty
Princes Trust
Dr Rang Singh
Jade Thirlwall (Little Mix)
Lorraine Kelly
Aon
Barclays
DMW Group
John Barrowman
Jameela Jamil
Duncan James
Sam Smith
Owen Jones
Starbucks (hard for them to delete that one!)
Channel 4
Canadian High Commission

Have I missed any obvious big names? I don't seem to have Josie Long saved anywhere

I don't think others have deleted tweets (that I know of) but I wanted to archive everything in the event that more and more people started doing it. This isn't an attempt at cancel culture (which I hate) but about holding influential people to account for the harm they've caused in supporting this charity.

That has the usual suspects plus celebs.

I don't know for sure as i'm not on twitter but I'm pretty sure Ash Sarkar has done stuff supporting Mermaids.

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/08/2020 16:55

If you go to mermaidsgender on Instagram they have all their celebrity supporters showing with names scribbled under their photos. I’m not on there so can’t go through it all, but someone who’s a member on there will see them clearly.

Lloyd's bank had mermaids as their official charity for a while

Most proponents of cancel culture say this.

Hate to say it but you're all starting to look a bit deranged and witch hunty, like you're sniffing the air for blood.

If something is going on with Mermaids just what exactly do you intend to do with this list of names? Hold a two-minute hate?

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 17:40

I’m sure they must have a supporters page on their site - if they have supported any awards there will be details there too.

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 17:42

Unwashed - people are keeping an eye on who is deleting their history. It’s interesting isn’t it? If people start disassociating themselves then that indicates something sinister is happening.

This side doesn’t write to companies and people to try to get them ‘cancelled’, pull webchats and sponsorship deals, organise social media pile ins etc...

AskDan · 12/08/2020 17:52

The point about Mermaids is that it is entirely propped up by its celebrity and corporate backers/endorsers. It was the same with Kids Company. You can't tell the story of what happened with Mermaids without this information so I want to save these tweets (before they are deleted) so we don't see history erased. I certainly do not want to see any of these individuals trolled or cancelled.

I suppose it is that they supported a charity that allegedly used drugs experimentally on minors. Is unnecessary surgery on young peoples bodies ever a good thing? When FGM and breast ironing are mentioned, it is unusually not in a celebratory or cheerleading way. Unlike the current promotion of breast binding, drugs being prescribed and surgical intervention on healthy bodies; irrespective of what guise this is being carried out under.

People have been raising these issues before.

I guess it may be akin to many abuses which have taken place in the past, leaving damaged bodies and souls in their wake. I think people who further promote it are part of the whole thing. They deodorise the veneer. I think is even more bankrupt when someone promotes something along those lines for 'likes'. Not saying they all do it for that, of course. I suspect some may do it to appear more 'progressive' and modern in quite a shallow way. Keeps them relevant. Just mon opinion.

unwashedanddazed · 12/08/2020 18:11

Serenity I know what 'this side' does, I've been GC for about 8 or 9 years. I'm on the same 'side' as the rest of you here.

But this somewhat gleeful list making looks like the tactics of TRAs. Unless the twoHopes is intending to actually write the story of what's happening, in which case I withdraw my expression of discomfort at what is going on in this thread.

Clymene · 12/08/2020 18:14

Is it gleeful to hold people to account?

AskDan · 12/08/2020 18:15

Not exactly a celeb.. but Mermaids were due to deliver training for teacher members in April.

Unwashed - I'm very happy to take criticism/feedback on this.

About a month ago I was thinking of publishing the list of celebrity/politician supporters online (with screenshotted evidence) so that it was in the public domain. But I actually thought twice about that and worried that it could lead to online abuse/trolling.

My objective was just to save the information on my hard drive so that when someone does write the full exposé, the history is not lost to the delete button. I'm probably not the best person to write this story as I'm not a journalist (and not a particularly good writer either).

OP posts:
PronounssheRa · 12/08/2020 18:29

A list would be very useful for a journalist, or anyone else who decides to write about this if the shit hits the fan.

For me it's about highlighting how dangerous it is to mindlessly throw your support behind a cause or charity
