So Dominos has cancelled its offer of free pizza to "Karens" that it made on social media a few days back. The reason for this cancellation is the backlash it received from the wokies, who aren't very happy that white women are being rewarded with free pizza (lol), because they're entitled, privileged, and use their skin colour in nefarious ways.

For example, twitter.com/aramreyess/status/1288314493085179904

I'm absolutely sick of this anti-woman, anti-white bullsh*t that's spreading through society.. I just have to say. Why is this happening?

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 15:16

I suppose we could amuse ourselves by mentioning that the wokes should speak to the manager at Domino's, as they do so enjoy wheeling out that 'gotcha' whenever anyone critiques the Karen meme.

QuestionMarkNow · 30/07/2020 15:19

I’m a middle age woman and I hated that offer.
Nit for the reason mentioned but because it was playing AGAIN on a word that is diminishing towards women.

It’s not about been woke or you g or whatever. It’s about not accepting sexism (even in a disguised form around one look how nice we are to give you a freeby)

Staffy1 · 30/07/2020 15:25

Absolutely. Being a white, middle-aged women seems to be a sin these days.

NotTerfNorCis · 30/07/2020 15:47

I don't agree that it's used far more by women. Just did a quick survey on Twitter (search on Karen, order by Latest) and the majority using it are men - which is the impression I always had.

I think what's happening is that the liberal, ID politics left are so into self-flagellation, treading on eggshells, blaming one another for trivial slip-ups and coping with severe cognitive dissonance while putting certain people on a pedestal, that they need a target to vent at - someone it's safe to hate. Earlier this year that looked like it was going to be older people ('ok boomer'). Now it's shifted to white women. Maybe hating old people went out of fashion because of Covid.

Datun · 30/07/2020 15:48

@Helmetbymidnight

i think a lot of people really are confused with the us and the uk. i dont believe karens are the entitled racists in this country- they are usually w/c and often black (at least my friends are)
That's probably the Twitter effect then, is it?

Is the name Kevin the same? It seems to have entirely different connotations over there than it does here.

twoHopes · 30/07/2020 16:02

Chad refers to a sexual 'alpha male' type - it's an incel term that's been around for years

Was coming here to say this. And the female equivalent of a "Chad" is a "Stacey". It's interesting that the "woke" are now using the same kinds of misogynistic names for women as the incels they so despise.

Wanderingstars4238 · 30/07/2020 19:37

It's a new trend that allows liberal men to look progressive while trashing women.
The attacks on white feminists are coming from the same place, it seems. And I have never known a man who hates "white feminism" to like black feminism, or feminism in general.

Wondersense · 30/07/2020 19:44

@Kit19 So true. It's just a way to tell any woman to shut up.

Honkyponk · 30/07/2020 19:52

I was in the park the other day with my mum and my two kids, and 3 nieces / nephews. There was a bunch of kids there who were hogging the best bit of play equipment, and when my mum politely asked if our bunch could have a go, they started kicking off, calling my mum a 'Karen' and being generally obnoxious and rude. These were 10 year old girls and obviously didn't get the irony but I could have wept it was so depressing. Once this kind of bullshit starts on social media there is no stopping it.

skql · 30/07/2020 19:54

actually i think it was "privileged white man".
and after that, going after "privileged white woman".

nepeta · 30/07/2020 19:59

And all the time we have a perfectly good name for the very entitled and obnoxious and narcissistic privileged white person. That would be Donald.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 30/07/2020 20:09

Actually apart from the person bit

ThaT describes donald duck 😳

Crackerofdoom · 30/07/2020 20:19

It reminds me of Father Ted getting away with using 'feck' instead of 'fuck' and removing broadcast restrictions on the show.

People say Karen, but we all know they mean one of the many derogatory terms for a woman which you couldn't use in polite society.

The racism seen in some of the videos is shocking and should of course be abhorred.

However the use of this handful of videos to promote this image that women are the group who are most entitled and privileged in today's society is dangerous, misleading and will no doubt lead to an increase in hostility towards women.

By focusing on the sex and not the colour of these women, people have succeeded in making racism a women's problem and not a white problem.

[quote SunsetBeetch]You're going to hate this then, OP. I certainly do.

Wow. Someone who believes the American 'Karen' meme is about women who are actually called Karen!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2020 20:44

It is used far more widely by women.

No it isn't.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2020 20:46

No. The only "feminism" they like is the one that shamelessly caters to the needs of male people.

It's to be expected that the mainstream media in the UK act as if we live in the 51st state, and spread the soft power of US cultural imperialism. It's being going on for years. Though the assimilation of US preoccupations, vocabulary, and memes has recently gathered pace.

It's also understandable in that context that on the dim web many UK people have swallowed it whole.

What's jaw-dropping though is the arrogance and ethnocentricity of so many US voices on social media who assume that the world, its language and norms, revolves around their country and their culture.

somewhereovertherainbutt · 30/07/2020 20:52

@nepeta

That the free pizzas were intended for real women called Karen because their name has been rolled in excrement and spat upon appears to completely miss the wokerati who complain about this.

This is just a little bit frightening, both in terms of the kind of blind injustice they are displaying and because of their apparent inability to climb above purely concrete thinking.

So the wokerati don't want anyone to be nice to women named Karen when, in fact, there is zero evidence that the group of nasty (white middle-aged) women the woke world so hates has unusually many women named Karen.

That white middle-aged women are very unlikely to any nastier, on average, than, say, white middle-aged men and yet there is a meme about the former group and not the latter does tell me that sexism is certainly thriving in social media.

This with bells on! It's awful that an unreasonable (or not) woman of a certain age is reduced to being dismissed by being a 'Karen'. Isn't this silencing?

I find it really annoying. Karen is not in any way a middle class name in the UK.

It's used on MN by women.
BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 30/07/2020 21:01

I’m a young person and definitely understand the Karen stereotype - I’ve experienced it myself when I used to work in retail

back when I worked in customer service the ones we really used to fear were the middle aged men. if anyone was going to be really nasty and intimidating, it was probably them. I expect people were different in the 90s though.

Eh? Not a middle class name? Even allowing for what does "working class " even mean, all the Karens I know are definitely middle class including an art teacher at a fee paying school; several partners in law and accountancy firms who very clearly did not come from working class backgrounds; and one double- barreled Karen who is a member of the Scottish aristocracy and has a tomb and statue of a 16th century ancestor in a major Scottish abbey.

Teachers

They were weirdly the worst...no idea why and i know loads of lovely teachers

So it may have been a 90’s thing

DidoLamenting · 30/07/2020 21:05

To be clear it's use is horrible and indefensible.

In my experience of various jobs which involve customer service any age, sex, class or race is capable of being horrible and unreasonable.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 30/07/2020 21:05

I was at the end of a phone though...
