Why don’t the men wear Speedo’s?

I was watching Breakfast news this morning and the English Commanwealth men’s and women’s teams for beach volleyball were demonstrating their game, it really struck me how different the team kit was between the sexes, the men had on long vest tops and knee length shorts, the women were wearing crop tops and tiny briefs which whilst playing became a thong. I have no issue with the women wearing the sports bikini but why don’t the men wear Speedo’s? Why are women’s (beautiful) bodies exposed but the men’s (beautiful) bodies are covered up? It irrationally irritated me this morning! I’ve posted similar pictures to what they were wearing for a visual aid!

@SetYourselfOnFire

If I had the guts and were one of the athletes in question, I would be tempted to grow my pubic hair to its natural maximum and watch the organisers have a coronary.

🤣🤣

That was actually strongly recommended to the female British cycling team. Shockingly public hair serves a purpose! Who knew? By not shaving they reduced significantly the damage caused by friction sitting in the saddle. They also had to challenge some of the random rules around saddle dimensions/angles, which had no scientific basis but meant they caused problems for female anatomy.

www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2016/aug/15/team-gb-cycling-saddle-sore-medals

So I wouldn't be surprised if there were rules around clothing and body hair that have no purpose but to make women more aesthetically pleasing for spectators.

Kit19 · 29/07/2020 13:00

i remember reading that and wincing at the thought of wearing the shorts the elite cyclists wear and those saddles with no buffer zone so to speak....

AntsInPenzance · 29/07/2020 14:01

I remember reading an interview with a female volleyball player and they said they preferred the bikini bottoms because of movement and it's easier to keep the sand out/clean the sand off the skin.

MrsSpenserGregson · 29/07/2020 14:09

I've ranted about this very issue so many times!

Same thing in gymnastics - the women wear leotards, the men wear singlets and short shorts. I'd understand if both sexes had to wear leotards in order to show the hip movement etc, but they don't.

It's shit, OP.

Female gymnasts don't have to wear leotards.

The words from my then 5yo DS - why are they wearing pants? Grin

I was watching the diving OMG could the budgie smugglers get any smaller?

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 29/07/2020 14:31

My kids used to have swimming lessons at a water polo club. Speedo's are pretty good at keeping everything in, even during what was basically rugby in a swimming pool (I don't understand the rules of the sport - there just seemed to be an awful lot of water thrashing around and occasionally I'd spot the ball)

I tell you, it was occasionally hard to know where to look when the men's team got out of the water and swarmed towards the changing rooms... the women's seemed much more decently covered!

draughtycatflap · 29/07/2020 14:33

In the past the male costume could be quite revealing.

Why don’t the men wear Speedo’s?
deydododatdodontdeydo · 29/07/2020 14:37

I recall reading about one sports (it could have been football) where a coach or someone higher up in the organisation wanted women to wear skimpy clothing so as to maximise male viewership

That was the notoriously sexist Sepp Blatter, and he was roundly criticised by all for it.

Why isn't the original question "why don't the women wear shorts?". That could equally apply, and turns out it is allowed, so why don't they?

Divebar · 29/07/2020 14:39

I can remember Linford “ Lunch box” Christie and the first time he appeared in his cat suit ( or whatever it’s called). I dare say some competitors are very comfortable showing their bodies given the amount of time they dedicate to training.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 29/07/2020 14:47

I've just been googling olympic swimmers (for research purposes Blush).
Seems the men are much more exposed that the women - speedos or lycra shorts. The women are mostly covered from neck to thigh. Some have open backs.
I don't know. Mixed feelings about this. The women vollyball players have the choice it seems.

MadCatLady71 · 29/07/2020 14:58

@TeiTetua

It is common and expected in our society for women to wear a lot less clothing than men.
Absolutely this. You see it on the beach every day, women in tiny bikinis (or half a bikini), men in baggy beach shorts.

Though here in France many municipal swimming pools don’t allow swimming shorts for hygiene reasons, so Speedo style trunks are a much more common sight, on all ages and body types.

Melroses · 29/07/2020 15:02

The womens swimwear changed fairly recently to the more ergonomic full length design. Some men were wearing them too. They have always had high necks because otherwise you scoop up half the pool and slow yourself down. The legs were a bit high too before.

ListeningQuietly · 29/07/2020 15:07

Tightly fitted clothes that do not move relative to the skin are much better than anything that shifts

male ballet dancers wear extra padding to reduce "definition"

True. Cyclists wear lycra, male or female. Triathletes too. In fact, the men's triathlete costume seems to favour a longer leg, whereas the women have either longer leg or bikini bottom type, quite an even mix.
It probably is the male volleyball players who have got it wrong.

highame · 29/07/2020 15:24

I think the women wear bikini style because it's practical. The tops act like good sports bras so they don't have to wear a sports bra and a top and the bottoms don't get in the way. Women's attire is far better than men's for Volleyball. The men should wear speedo's but I bet they think they're not cool. Isn't there a country where the men do wear speedo's

They can also get a nice sun tan. Superficial, yes, but if I was 20 with a body like there's I wouldn't want white marks everywhere.

highame · 29/07/2020 15:25

should have said 'women can get a nice sun tan' also missed out question marks.

Freespeecher · 29/07/2020 18:34

OP

It's because we're worried the 's' might fall off.

JoanFit · 04/10/2020 15:08

A lot of men wear them for swim workouts.

My new lover does.

Met him at the pool in his solid black speedo.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/10/2020 15:17

"here in France many municipal swimming pools don’t allow swimming shorts for hygiene reasons, so Speedo style trunks are a much more common sight, on all ages and body types."

Which has led to lots of complaints from Muslim men who are supposed to dress modestly (yes, the men too!).

CaraDuneRedux · 04/10/2020 15:18

I recall reading about one sports (it could have been football) where a coach or someone higher up in the organisation wanted women to wear skimpy clothing so as to maximise male viewership. That is probably the real reason for the differences in what men and women wear in some sports.

It was Sepp Blatter, who at the time was president of the IFAF, so basically the head honcho for the whole of football worldwide.

Raving misogynist and as dishonest as the day is long (allegedly).

Crikey, what lovely oars.
Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 15:33

I think tight bottoms much more uncomfortable for men. Squeeze the package.

Bollocks!

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 15:35
