Whether someone is likable or not seems to be much larger concern for women in the public sector than for men. I know it is frequently written up as a problem with various female politicians in the US. There is a culturally in-built expectation that women should be nicer people, on the whole, so a woman who speaks very bluntly comes across as ruder than an objectively equally rude man.

But I actually haven't though about people like Posie from that angle. I don't know her in real life so I have no idea if I would like her. I do appreciate Posie's voice in the present context, of course.

JamesArthursEyelashes · 30/07/2020 19:52

Oh come off the fence James - do you like her or not? wink

No fence here. NO, I DON’T LIKE HER ! 🤣

nepeta · 30/07/2020 19:52

I mean this whole project has been wonderful, well planned and getting exactly the kind of publicity we would have wanted. The Streisand effect in operation.

Lelophants · 30/07/2020 19:53

Who's posie? Yes I need educating Blush

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 30/07/2020 19:54

She's probably a bit fierce to like in RL, but I think she's amazing.

I don’t think she should be nicer. She is who she is and that’s fine. There’s probably lots of people who I don’t like, that doesn’t mean they should change.

nauticant · 30/07/2020 19:59

Lelophants: Posie is short for Posie Parker, a pseudonym of Kellie-Jay Keen, the founder of Standing for Women.

The Spectator piece by Stephen Daisley is excellent.

His current pinned tweet:
Hey, @ networkrail. I ❤ JK Rowling, too. #IStandWithJKRowling

CasuallyMasculine · 30/07/2020 20:03

Thanks for making it clear, if inexplicable, james.

LillianBland · 30/07/2020 20:39

We do not allow advertising that is likely to support or promote one viewpoint over another.

Yet, are proud to attach the rainbow to their insignia. Whether or not you support the rainbow, it’s utter hypocrisy of them to spout the above, when they’re doing exactly the same.

JamesArthursEyelashes · 30/07/2020 20:44

Thanks for making it clear, if inexplicable, james.

I do have reasons for not liking her. I’ve just not gone into detail about them.

Lelophants · 30/07/2020 21:03

Thanks @nauticant

BatShite · 30/07/2020 21:20

‘We do not allow advertising that promotes one view over another‘

Is a really really odd excuse as..pretty much everything promotes one view over another?

Support RSPCA promotes RSPCA supporters over those who do not.
An advert for a lipstick supports people who like/buy it over those who don't like it/wont buy it.

Etc.

Really odd phrasing and yet another excuse to..shit on women really. How surprising.

Wonder what would happen with a stonewall ad, especially given how anti LGB stonewall is these days..

BatShite · 30/07/2020 21:31

You know, it seems petty as fuck but I have a lot of spare time in the next few weeks..I kind of feel like spending some of it reporting each advert on there as it will be 'promoting one view over another'..hell thats advertising in general?! Wonder how many they take down...guesses? 0 is mine, but will be interesting.

OldCrone · 30/07/2020 21:35

We do not allow advertising that is likely to support or promote one viewpoint over another.

They seem to be referring to this part of their code of acceptance for advertising:

An Advertisement will not be approved for, or permitted to remain on display if it is of a political nature calling for the support of a particular viewpoint, policy or action or attacking a member or policies of any legislative, central or local government authority

How is expressing admiration and affection for a popular children's author 'political' and calling for 'support of a particular viewpoint policy or action'?

Godxilla · 30/07/2020 22:00

I've just bought a "I love jk" t-shirt from Standing For Women. I meant to buy it an age ago but never got round to it. This has galvanised me, even though money is tight.

JellyFishSquish · 30/07/2020 22:35

The unfortunate thing about women is that sometimes they can care too much what people think and that is why we're in such a mess

Ain't that the truth

StandUpStraight · 30/07/2020 22:53

I have just bought a few of the pens that identify as quills. Some to send to female family members, and one for myself to use in the office (if we ever go back there) as a tiny little gesture of defiance. Would very likely be fired if I wore the T-shirt.
StandUpStraight · 30/07/2020 22:54

Although I should say I do have an adult human female T-shirt from a while ago. I am just too chicken to wear it out of the house. Blush

gardenbird48 · 30/07/2020 23:03

@JamesArthursEyelashes

She doesn’t seem to be particularly bothered whether people like her or not.

Well I’m not a TRA, I just don’t like her. I agree with some of what she says but not all and I think she’s very arrogant with a huge ego. I don’t expect her to care whether I like her or not though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t think that PP is doing this to make friends and I applaud that. Women are fierce - especially when the children are threatened and the men need to feel that.
highame · 30/07/2020 23:03

@OldCrone that's a bit of a find. They'll have some difficulty trying to explain that one.

They'd have to explain why they think the ad. is political and that means they will have to acknowledge that they are biased

FloralBunting · 30/07/2020 23:07

I've actually met Posie, and I found her incredibly intimidating but that was probably because I fancied her and was much more at ease with the brilliant Julia Long with whom I had a great conversation and what remains one of my favourite pictures was of the two of us in a pub together. I think I'd still probably find Posie very intimidating, tbh, and we probably wouldn't be pals, but I respect her tenacity and fierce commitment to this, and she has made some legendary moves in this whole debacle that have been advertising masterpieces. Plus I know she has given hope to some mums of ROGD kids in the US who thought everyone had abandoned them, some of whom I now know well, and I don't think anything will ever erase that act of compassion.

tennistables · 30/07/2020 23:17

I remember posie from donkeys years ago on here when she was a SAHM and talked a lot about her DH being a high earner and being cross with him for 'coasting' at work.

As a counterpoint she obviously had well developed social conscience, there used to be a poster called Riven who had a daughter with (from memory) quite severe disabilities.

I think she and Posie were maybe living lived at different sides of the track in the same locality and Posie seemed to care a lot for her. (I also seem to remember her baking a cake to bring to Riven when David Cameron was the then PM and visited her to discuss DLA Grin)

I don't know her but from back then she's always seemed at turns brash, kind, publicity seeking, supportive. In short: a multi-faceted personality.

Us women are way more than the one word men choose to label us by.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/07/2020 23:29

That's interesting, tennistables - I remember Riven, she was a very distinctive voice on MN who made me rethink quite a few assumptions but I don't think I registered Posie at the time.

Cismyfatarse1 · 30/07/2020 23:32

Is Network Rail an organisation that would have to respond to a Freedom of Information request?
