Thanks for that reply, YetAnotherSpartacus.

Gender, used carefully and in particular ways, is useful to designate something that 'isn't sex' (biology) and which is about the power of men to define who women are socially.

I understand the usefulness of gender as a word to describe the socially constructed roles of the two sexes. But I still don't see why the study described in the article is a 'gender' study. It's about the differing effects of COVID-19 on men and women. I still see it as being about sex, not gender. It's about women as a sex class - the class of humans who are female. The reasons for the difference in impact are to do with gender, but the actual impact affects the two sexes differently.

The way I see it, women are experiencing more negative social and economic effects than men from the pandemic because of gender - this is the mechanism by which women as a sex class experience worse effects. Would it be wrong to call it a sex related study?

More men than women are dying of COVID-19. Would an investigation into this phenomenon also be called a 'gender study'?

I see it the same way OldCrone. Women are experiencing specific effects because of our sex - it's our sex which is used to push us into performing certain roles within society. Also this study is looking at health as well as economic impact, so using sex instead of gender is 'cleaner' imo.
