I was just coming here to post this! Well done, Shahrar Ali:

What Is A Woman?

Statement by Shahrar Ali, 20 July 2020

A woman is commonly defined as an adult human female and, genetically, typified by two XX chromosomes. These facts are not in dispute nor should they be in any political party. We campaign for the rights of women and girls to be treated equally on the basis of the protected characteristic of biological sex, as enshrined in the Equality Act 2010.

In society, women and girls suffer disproportionately from a number of social and institutional harms, such as domestic violence and gender pay discrimination. Internationally, abhorrent practices such as infanticide and Female Genital Mutilation still need to be overcome.

In recent decades, thankfully, society has moved on in many aspects of equality, but there is still much to be done. Gender reassignment is another protected characteristic and we will fight for the rights of trans people according to their assigned gender, too. It is right that those who are currently disadvantaged should gain the equality they justly deserve.

Greens will continue to fight oppression wherever it occurs and we will use plain English to communicate our aims to the electorate, clearly, credibly and consistently'

This is the best statement on the subject from a politician that I think I've seen yet. So bloody heartening. Let's hope he succeeds in his leadership bid - the party might yet be salvageable, and I'd join.

showmethegin · 21/07/2020 11:28

So would I.

OP posts:
ScrimpshawTheSecond · 21/07/2020 11:30

If I joined now, would I be able to vote for him? And Andrea Carey Fuller? Can anyone explain the processes? I was a member many years ago, but while it's been capitulating to the apologists for the Challenors, I wouldn't touch it.

Collidascope · 21/07/2020 11:33

Good on him. And Andrea Carey Fuller. Really heartening to see some sensible people in the Green Party.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 21/07/2020 11:35

Ah, it's the GP for England and Wales. Will be interesting to see how Patrick Harvie takes this.

Deliriumoftheendless · 21/07/2020 11:40

Of COURSE someone in the comments is saying it sound transphobic (but they’re not trolling!). Neither does she explain HOW it is, but also no one seems to bother addressing her. Has the “OMG!! That’s, like, sooooooo transphobic” shit throwing approach finally lost its magic?

I will also be considering the greens if they start being sensible again.

LOLeater · 21/07/2020 11:47

I will not vote Labour until they recognise my sex. If the Green Party makes a clear and unequivocal commitment to protecting women only spaces, I will vote for them. Just watching and waiting.....

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 21/07/2020 11:47

+1 for wondering if it's too late to join the green party to get these people voted in? A party lead by people who support the rights of everyone as enshrined in the equalities act whilst recognising reality and answering straight questions with straight answers would truly be something to behold in this day and age.

I’d also like to know this
showmethegin · 21/07/2020 12:10

I'm not sure, lifetime labour voter (although fully willing to change that if the Greens are adopting this stance!)

OP posts:
Beamur · 21/07/2020 12:14

Good for them!

Maduixa · 21/07/2020 12:24

Someone said in the comments (to Shahrar's tweet) that you must be a member by 31 July 2020 in order to vote.

Can't find a "join-by" date on the Greens website, just this: "Members will then be able to vote between 3 and 31 August and the results will be announced shortly after. All fully paid-up members are eligible to vote by single transferable vote, with ballots issued by email and, where required, paper copies."

What have we come to to be so grateful when a politician from Green Party (or Labour) speaks for women's (rightful) rights and the truth. IMO it's the minimum they should be doing as part of their job.

dons hard hat

BolloxtoGender · 21/07/2020 12:29

Had no idea that would turn out bold

showmethegin · 21/07/2020 12:30

@BolloxtoGender Yes you're right; it is the least they should be doing however it has now become so rare to actually see them do this it is noteworthy. How depressing!

OP posts:
Eyesofdisarray · 21/07/2020 12:32

Brilliant!
Is the tide turning??????????

BolloxtoGender · 21/07/2020 12:33

@showmethegin yes it's an indication of the darkness we are in, when we have to clutch at glimmers of hope.

AnIckabog · 21/07/2020 12:35

Mind you, they have a whole LGBTIQA+ (think I got that right, I genuinely tried to remember between tabs!) manifesto which includes self-ID.

also dons hard hat
Needmoresleep · 21/07/2020 12:42

I like the sound of Shahrar Ali.

If he wins the Greens can have my vote.

PegasusReturns · 21/07/2020 12:46

Now that everything is transphobic such an accusation no longer holds the sway it once did.

The TRAs over played their hand.

Collidascope · 21/07/2020 12:50

Here's hoping Rosemary Sexton doesn't win.

Firstly, yes, Stonewall have specifically said they want to change the equality act to withdraw the right to single-sex spaces.

Secondly, maybe don't reply to a woman who's been threatened with rape by completely ignoring her trauma. At least pretend to give a shit.
