Munroe Bergdorf lands big book deal with Bloomsbury

Reported rather breathlessly in the Graun

www.theguardian.com/books/2020/jul/17/munroe-bergdorf-receives-landmark-book-deal-for-trans-manifesto

Among other things she’s going to tell us all that the experience being a ‘ciswoman’ has changed over the years. Hmm

‘my intelligence has been undermined, and I’ve been underestimated a lot in a lot of different instances.’

Sounds a bit Dunning-Kruger to me, to be honest.

Who do they think is going to actually buy this book?

I used this link because I didn't want to give the Guardian clicks.

This bit genuinely made me laugh:
"I've gone into the depths of where gender came from, because it hasn't always existed in [the way] we think about gender today," said Bergdorf. "What it's like to be a cisgender woman today is not what it was in the middle ages, or the 1950s, or even the 1980s."

Wow! Women's roles have changed with time??? Oh my god, I didn't know that.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 17/07/2020 07:16

Well that should be a fascinating read.

Collidascope · 17/07/2020 07:19

It reminds me of Trump when he learns something new, which the entire rest of the world already knows, and he announces it with such pride in a press conference.

Binterested · 17/07/2020 07:20

What has MB ever actually done that is of interest ? Have a lot of surgery and wear a lot of makeup. Offend a lot of women. I’d be more likely to read Katie Price’s book. At least she’s not stealing my identity.

BuffysBigSister · 17/07/2020 07:26

I wonder if a "sensitivity reader" will check the book to make sure Munroe hasn't insulted women. They undoubtedly understand the lived experience of transwomen but have no idea about the experience of women.

NotBadConsidering · 17/07/2020 07:27

Wait: Bloomsbury that publishes Harry Potter?

Presumably Bergdorf had no issue with their history of publishing the work of Bergdorf’s nemesis JK Rowling when they dangled a big cheque in front of Bergdorf.

That they have the money to offer Bergdorf is directly as a result of the success brought by the Harry Potter books. Don’t take the blood money Munroe! 😆😆😆

ThatsHowWeRowl · 17/07/2020 07:28

OMGEEEEEEEEE - Munroe Bergdorf is going to tell me all about being a woman? I simply must rush out and buy this book as soon as its available, I have been waiting my whole life for Munroe to educate me about my 'cis womanhood' and how it has changed since the middle ages.

As if Munroe will write it. Not a jot of talent.

Ghostwritten by Owen Jones?
boatyardblues · 17/07/2020 07:45

I’m struggling to understand the market for this book. If you really wanted to know about women’s lives over the centuries, surely you’d look for something written by a qualified historian with some aptitude for writing/communicating their research in an effecting, engaging way? Munroe’s current media profile doesn’t suggest this is a project that aligns well with their talents.

Winesalot · 17/07/2020 07:46

So.... this is about their experiences and talking about ’how I see society changing for the better, bringing us all closer’?

They really live on a different world don’t they? I have not really seen any evidence of this on this world and I have certainly not seen MB being an instrument of bringing people together. Rather of continued divisiveness and grandstanding.

But I am sure to see great insight into female adolescence being discussed by someone who a) has lived it or b) has made a lifetime studying it over decades of work with adolescent girls. Oh... wait...well they model and sell products that are aimed at adolescent girls so I guess that helps.

Winesalot · 17/07/2020 07:48

Exactly. They have always been just the opposite. Tone deaf and divisive if not blindingly offensive.

NotBadConsidering · 17/07/2020 07:49

Ghostwritten by Owen Jones?

Who better to talk about tell women about “cis” women’s experiences? He would jump at the chance. I would actually love it if he did. It would just be perfect I reckon.

Lamahaha · 17/07/2020 07:50

Publishers like to make these announcements of huge advances -- it's all part of the publicity.
Very rarely do they earn out, unless the writer has a big name (Rowling, King etc).

crumpet · 17/07/2020 07:51

I haven’t read the link, but her quote about the experience of women changing over time is fucking hilarious. AS IF WE DIDN'T KNOW!

boatyardblues · 17/07/2020 07:54

Whoever drew the parallels with Trump’s grand announcements is bang on.

SunsetBeetch · 17/07/2020 08:00

Maybe JKR is ghost writing it?

ContentiousOne · 17/07/2020 08:10

You know, I'd be happy not to hear about MB anymore. They are a celebrity, no more, and nothing about their life or 'wisdom' is of interest or relevance to me.

If fools want to pay good money to read a male manifesto on womanhood, Goodluck to 'em, but it sounds like a waste of cash to me.

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 17/07/2020 08:14

my intelligence has been undermined

Yeah, byyou, mate, every time you open your mouth.

NotBadConsidering · 17/07/2020 08:21

@SunsetBeetch

Maybe JKR is ghost writing it?
She is superb at fantasy fiction.
Vermeil · 17/07/2020 08:22

Fancy making a career for yourself as a professional transwoman, having that little to offer to the world yet making so much noise about it. 😣

Wondersense · 17/07/2020 09:41

@Collidascope Good comparison.

Wondersense · 17/07/2020 09:43

@ThatsHowWeRowl That's what I thought.
