From Penis News, but hopefully this link won't give them revenues:

I would be really interested to know the decision making behind this.

Someone tried to find out via FOI, and they refused because:

The information you have requested is excluded from the Act because if held it would be held for the purposes of ‘journalism, art or literature.’ The BBC is therefore not obliged to provide this information to you and will not be doing so on this occasion. Part VI of Schedule 1 to FOIA provides that information held by the BBC and the other public service broadcasters is only covered by the Act if it is held for ‘purposes other than those of journalism, art or literature”. The BBC is not required to supply information held for the purposes of creating the BBC’s output or information that supports and is closely associated with these creative activities.

I can’t quite believe this Shock

I honestly was preparing myself for it all being put back again with some minor tweaks.

This is a seriously important decision. Recognition that Mermaids are not some benign GOSH-like ‘children’s charity’ but promoters of a particular line of ‘treatment’ that is now finally undergoing intense scrutiny and criticism. Finally, it seems the penny is dropping. Thank f**k for that!

MrsJamin · 27/07/2020 22:14

Something big is about to drop isn't it?

OvaHere · 27/07/2020 22:14

That's frustrating OldCrone

TBHno · 27/07/2020 22:27

I don't care why it's been removed, I'm just glad that it's gone.

Many people trust the BBC as a reliable source for facts. Dangerous pseudoscience like pink brains has no place within the BBC.

Btw: Hi Susie! (I know you're reading this)

Shedbuilder · 27/07/2020 22:27

Just caught up with this. Really good news. The tanker is turning.

bishopgiggles · 27/07/2020 22:30
Shock I'm genuinely shocked. Very shocked. Stunned. Very stunned. Shocked and stunned.

... as a bunch of Northerners put it.

It feels like a rather large tremor.

Whatisthisfuckery · 27/07/2020 22:43

I don’t for a second think complaints have anything to do with it. We’ve been complaining for years about the BBC more or less advertising for Mermaids and nothing has been done. I think a bloody great torpedo is heading for the good ship Mermaids and the BBC are evacuating sharpish. There have been rumblings of something big waiting to pop for a while and the BBC have just found out and shat themselves, I’d put money on it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/07/2020 23:33

I think you're right on the money there. Given how snottily the BBC have responded to any complaint I've ever made about their coverage, that's bollocks. They are going to get a big backlash for dropping Mermaids. They would not have done that just because some readers and viewers complained.

SenselessUbiquity · 27/07/2020 23:42

This is really huge!

You know what though - when the heroes that have worked so hard to fix this, have fixed it, we're all going to be gaslit and told that "it was never that bad". "the BBC would never have promoted that," etc.

I'll remember, though. You lot will remember.

This is the lot of feminism. every feminist position that is fought for is considered to be insane, demanding, deranged, selfish, bitter and wrong - till it is won; then it is considered to be so manifestly reasonable that no one believes it was every fought for, in the teeth of violent opposition.

Siameasy · 27/07/2020 23:51

Yes I do get the impression they are seeking to disassociate themselves so they will be on the “right side of history”. Then they will tell everyone how they were one of the first big organisations to “do the right thing”; any others who follow now are “inspired” by them. In fact, the BBC were “against this all along and others were just so slow to catch on!” The BBC “leading the way!”
Friggin Animal Farm again.

OldCrone · 27/07/2020 23:52

How will they explain 'I am Leo'?

FloralBunting · 28/07/2020 00:14

@OldCrone

How will they explain 'I am Leo'?
Probably with 'look into the eyes, not around the eyes' and hand waving.
OldCrone · 28/07/2020 00:32

I've just seen there's another FOI request about this.
www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/minutes_from_meeting_resulting_i

Reply due from the BBC by 12th August.

Request made by someone representing Gendered Intelligence and Gender GP. It seems everyone wants to know why the BBC have made this change.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 28/07/2020 00:41

This should give strength to the arm of anyone challenging these groups being signposted within schools. Now when you're saying "please don't send students to mermaids" you can add "big organisations like the BBC have started withdrawing x, y, z lobby groups from their advice pages due to the tremendous controversy around them". Once one or 2 big orgs start backtracking, smaller ones get nervous and try to keep up. No one wants to be caught out on the wrong side of history, and the right side of history was never the one sterilising gay, lesbian, and autistic children.

blubellsarebells · 28/07/2020 01:00

This is good. Good news.
How the bbc have endorsed the absolute shit show that is mermaids for so long is beyond me, hopefully more will follow suit.
Are children in need and comic relief bbc charities? Not sure how it works.
I hope there is a big story coming soon, its got to come one day.
Do Tesco know about this? And starbucks?
We need to not let these dumb wokey bastards off the hook.
Hi Susie and Helen, sucks to be you right now hey.
Diddums.

MrsJamin · 28/07/2020 06:48

I wonder if they are frustrated or relieved not to be posting on twitter for the next day or two. It's so crucial that we can now all say to any organisation that the BBC used to signpost to mermaids but now no longer to as its not a safe place to send kids who are confused about gender. It gives us a lot more clout.

Clymene · 28/07/2020 07:38

It's an interesting coincidence that the bbc take down their recommendation at the exact time mermaids withdraw from social media.

Clymene · 28/07/2020 07:41

Oh I see, it's because of antisemitism. Allowing a load of paedophiles to post on twitter is aok, as long as they're not anti Semitic. Right o.

CaveMum · 28/07/2020 07:52

It’s worth checking your child’s school website. I know my daughters Primary has Mermaids listed as “resources” on their LGBT policy page so I shall be contacting the safeguarding lead ASAP To ask that it be taken down (I’ve raised my concerns about the link in the past but nothing was done).

highame · 28/07/2020 07:59

Don't get too excited.

I would think some of the complaints came from the medical establishment which would carry a lot more weight. Plus their own investigations for Newsnight.

Although I would love some sort of shit show hurtling towards 'mad, bad & dangerous to know' organisations, such as Mermaids, I'm in the 'lets just wait and see' camp.

The Beeb has been critical of TWAW but unfortunately it's been really early in the morning or late at night. I made a complaint about this last year and said that this was important to all women and not minority opinions and that they should get a grip. They didn't

bishopgiggles · 28/07/2020 08:36

@Clymene

Just clarifying that you mean Twitter in general here, not any particular person named in this thread.

Twitter does allow "minor attracted persons" to post seemingly anything.
They also didn't act against antisemitic posts which is why some ppl are now boycotting for 48 hours.

Gurufloof · 28/07/2020 08:38

@SenselessUbiquity
But these days we have the internet and nothing is ever truly gone from the internet. Also lots and lots of people saved the relevant stuff and way more that's only acquainted with in archives. So others may well say it wasnt so bad, but apart from we all know how bad it was, there is documented proof of just how bad it got.
Thank God the tide appears to be turning at last.

ThePurported · 28/07/2020 10:21

Good point, but why on earth did the BBC promote this org in the first place?

I vaguely remember reading an article about Mermaids years ago when they had just abandoned the watchful waiting approach and thinking 'that's nuts, but no one will take them seriously'. Well, the BBC did.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/07/2020 10:29

Isn't it just.
