From Penis News, but hopefully this link won't give them revenues:

If I were Mermaids I would be worried that the FOI will come back: "We had a meeting and we all agreed, we think trans kids should be supported in the best way possible, but the evidence suggests you are the worst organisation to do that."

Datun · 30/07/2020 11:09

There are other organisations, the BBC don't HAVE to bow down and swear loyalty to mermaids forever ffs.

Someone on that thread is under the impression it's illegal not to. And someone else thinks that the NHS updated info on puberty blockers is apparently 'misleading'.

So a number of people are certainly under the impression that the BBC must do what they're told.

Binterested · 30/07/2020 11:18

The thing with the FOI requests is it just reminds me how deep this goes. They really believe they are right and that they are doing a good thing for kids and that there is some weird cabal out there trying to stop them through evil means.

That's where quasi-religious fervour gets you.

ThePurported · 30/07/2020 11:40

I'm hoping the decision came about because someone at the BBC finally got around to watching one of those training videos and said "hang on, we're supporting this?"
But then there's I am Leo and all the other genderist stuff.

Binterested · 30/07/2020 11:44

Yes it’s a religion Sad. State sponsored. Although we are working on that.

CaveMum · 30/07/2020 11:45

It may well be linked to the Newsnight pieces they’ve run recently. Presumably all Newsnight items have to get signed off by their legal department first and if someone spotted that the Beeb were openly supporting an organisation that they themselves had investigated, well... excrement meet oscillating wind machine!

nauticant · 30/07/2020 11:52

if someone spotted that the Beeb were openly supporting an organisation that they themselves had investigated

Yes, that was my thought, that it was this that gave them a pretext to invoke the "journalism" exception. Or, being optimistic, that there's currently an active investigation by BBC.

Yep. Can't continue with the hypocrisy, and have found an arse covering way of not doing so.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2020 11:59

I do hope the BBC responds to Mermaids and fulfils the FOI. I do hope Mermaids recalls that we can all read FOI content. Since we know that the BBC is institutionally pro-genderism, there must be some quite significant reasons this decision was taken. I, for one, would love to read about them.

Me too, WhatKatyDidNot

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2020 12:01

I would expect Mermaids are trying backchannels into the BBC to persuade them to change this.

I think this is certain. Belcher and Trans Media Watch and their pet MPs and other officials will be on the case, I'm sure.

BloodSweatAndBeers · 30/07/2020 12:15

Very disingenuous FB post from The Times today:

Mermaids, which supports transgender children and young people, is the best-known trans group to be removed from the BBC Advice Line service.

The charities appear to have become victims of a dispute between trans activists and campaigners who believe that the rights and safety of women are being undermined.

Binterested · 30/07/2020 12:45

They are not the victims of a dispute. They are the trans activists. How weird.

And ‘transgender children’ ? Can we stop using this terminology please. Children who are questioning their gender.

BloodSweatAndBeers · 30/07/2020 12:48

Surely it's the rights and safety of children that are being undermined, in this context?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 30/07/2020 12:49

Ta, Mermaids. Looking forward very much to the results of the FOI.

MoltenLasagne · 30/07/2020 12:51

It's also a misrepresentation of why we've raised concerns about Mermaids though. The major concern is they are promoting regressive sex stereotypes and giving untested drugs to gender non conforming children. Especially as this disproportionately impacts gay and autistic children.

Yes, there are also concerns that the wider TRA community are pushing for things that impact on women's rights but that is very much secondary when it comes to Mermaids.

Yes. Those bloody drugs - the irreversible effects - the surgery ...

Or maybe it's the inevitable litigation they're most worried about?

Looking forward (iykwim) to the FoI response.

thehumanformerlyknownasfemale · 30/07/2020 13:01

Someone on that thread is under the impression it's illegal not to.

Was that the tweet saying it's discrimination against gender reassignment under the EA?

Funny how the EA is so relevant when it affects them. What about sex based rights being dismissed by countless organisations? Where are they stamping their feet about that?

OvaHere · 30/07/2020 13:18

Apologies if this has been mentioned. Wondering if anything significant has changed recently in the BBC structure I did a search and found this from June.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/06/05/bbc-appoint-tim-davie-new-director-general-replace-lord-hall/

The BBC has promoted its commercial chief to the role of director-general, as the corporation faces up to a future with a reduced licence fee and growing competition from US rivals.

He takes up the role officially from September.

This stood out. He was the guy who mopped up after Saville.

Davie is considered a safe choice and one who has previously proven himself in a crisis: in 2012 he stepped in as acting director-general when George Entwistle was forced to quit over the Jimmy Savile scandal.

A coincidence? Perhaps. Reading between the lines it sounds to me like he is being promoted to be a 'troubleshooter' for the BBC on a number of different fronts and getting ahead of issues is probably a small part of that.

His first press statement talks about impartiality and I think promotion of Mermaids and similar orgs crosses a line when you consider what the investigative journalists from Newsnight have been uncovering.

OneEpisode · 30/07/2020 13:29

mermaids have said they have done a FOI but can anyone find it? OldCrone posted www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/minutes_from_meeting_resulting_i earlier, which lists all the removed orgs, including Mermaids.
I thought it interesting that the sign/off was:

“Yours faithfully,

Adi Daly-Gourdialsing [Pronouns: She/Her]
Gendered Intelligence GIANTS Spokesperson/Head of Patient Services at GenderGP“

The Giants thing is probably voluntary genderedintelligence.co.uk/projects/GIANTS

But the charity has allowed themselves to be associated with the Webberleys and GenderGP?
Is this standard?

JamieLeeCurtains · 30/07/2020 13:32

I do hope you're on to something there, @OvaHere

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/07/2020 13:33

Hopefully if they get loads of FOIs about this they will decide it is in the public interest to make a statement / publish the results.

Datun · 30/07/2020 13:35

Endorsing an organisation that promoted a doctor who was suspended for running an illegal drugs clinic, might, I imagine, be the sort of thing that would trouble the BBC in terms of 'impartiality'.
