The problem with Twitter though, as far as I can see, is it’s such a massive ‘look at me’ platform, the place is littered with attention-seeking tweets rather than valid discussion. I hadn’t realised Atwood was in that category.

No.... for some characteristics humans are one bell curve, for others, as a sexually dimorphic species there are two distinct bell curves, bimodal distribution. Height is an obvious example.

And for sex, there is no curve. It's a binary, including people with DSDs.

One of the drivers of our 'infinite variety' is, of course, sexual reproduction.

Atwood is a novelist, not a scientist or mathematician.

Very strange to post this as it is 3 years old and there have been many articles since then saying that even with variants, there are biologically only 2 sexes.

Sometimes think she is part of an era of which ursula le guinn and in fact shulasmith firestone that want there not to be the biological reality of sex.

also she loves playing with words, so those of us who are more slow witted than her can often get caught out because we dont get the "joke"

But disappointing as she also seems to be mixing in sexuality. What have gay penguins got to do with the biological reality of sex.

Look, I love MA, and she's an incredibly versatile artist, but biology clearly isn't her strong suit.

It IS actually slightly more nuanced than there just being men and women. Stepping aside from the trans debate which is different there is not ALWAYS XX or XY and the genetic make up doesn’t always match up totally with the expression of those genes in a physical way...

Differences of sexual development are not different sexes. It's not complicated at all....except, perhaps, with CAIS women, who I personally consider social women, as they've been socialised as females since birth.

It IS actually slightly more nuanced than there just being men and women.

Slightly. And absolutely nothing like a bell curve with most people somewhere in the middle.
