Munroe Bergdorf

I am trans.

I was a follower of Munroe Bergdorf’s Instagram.

Munroe wrote a post about JK Rowling, calling her a dangerous woman to the trans community. Munroe stayed something along the lines of

“JKR is a dangerous cisgendered, white woman who is causing harm”

I replied to this post, asking why Munroe felt it necessary to mention JK Rowing’s racial identity.

I wasn’t Abusive. I just felt that it wasn’t necessary, in regards to what Munroe was being critical of, to mention JK Rowling’s ethnicity.

Within minutes my post was deleted and I was blocked.

I am trans, and Munroe has silenced me.

So it seems nothing can be questioned. Any intent to ask a question, or to strike up debate, will be met with being silenced.

This is fast turning into propaganda. This is fast turning into thought crime. This is fast turning into silencing. This is fast turning into something it should never have been.

When a trans person isn’t even able to question another trans person, what chance do “people who belong to sex that menstruate”* have?

 • Christ, I don’t even feel like I can use the word women here without being controversial.

I am so sorry for people to whom I thought I identified alongside (trans people) who are doing this to you. I feel sick and ashamed of what I am, because of people who are representing me.

I feel like I literally have no space left. And I can’t help but feel that a lot of biological woman are feeling the same way. And you have so much more to lose than I ever will, so I simply can’t imagine how this is making you all feel.

OP posts:
@SunsetBeetch exactly, if we were discussing who could compete in dressage at the Olympics it would be totally reasonable for a man to say to a woman what’s gender got to do with it?
Maybe you should google "sexism dressage" like I just did, or maybe don't.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 08/07/2020 14:26

It's also not unreasonable for a POC not to indulge a 1000 fragile white commenters who need spoon feeding the basics

I personally think that's the crux of why such an "innocent" question (innocent in quotation marks as it seems it on the face of it and even if it was meant innocently by OP) why should someone have to spoon feed privilege deniers (as seen on this thread!) basics as you say?
Be nothing to do with "Munroe so vacuous, only wants adoration on Insta!}
Um, no just making a point and really shouldn't have to wade through all this privilege denying she'd inevitably have got.

Datun · 08/07/2020 14:29

What is your problem with responding to the arguments people are actually making?

🤣

If I only had a penny...

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/07/2020 14:32

MB knows naff all about women's issues so why is it ok for MB to tell a biological woman what she can and can't talk about?

Is MB allowed to do this because MB is a POC?

Again as a white woman id like to know what I'm allowed to express opinions on too.

TheSingingKettle49 · 08/07/2020 14:33

Ok, one more time...how does JKR being white have any bearing on her stance on women’s rights?

BTW I just picked dressage because it’s the only sport I can think of where men and women aren’t separated to compete.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/07/2020 14:35

puts hand up <

I'd like to know too?

ShinyFootball · 08/07/2020 14:35

Ok lemonade and madbad I just saw this on another thread:

'Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born writer and activist against FGM and child marriage (among other things) has spoken out in support of JKR:
twitter.com/Ayaan/status/1280716418460209152

One of the first responses accuses her of cis privilege!'

What do you think about that? It feels linked to me in this 'you have to compare oppression points before you know whether you can speak' situation.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/07/2020 14:40

Sure JKR has benefited from white privilege. MB has benefited from male privilege. And MB, who has a history of openly threatening violence during their various petulant tantrums, doesn't get to tell a woman who's been subjected to male violence to shut up.

And no, they don't get to leverage race to silence her when the dynamic of trans politics in the UK is about a group of powerful white males lobbying to remove the rights of women and children of all races.

This.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/07/2020 14:42

This thread reminded me of Bergdorfs last year attempt at canceling Janice over "porn star" tweets. That was all nonsense too.

Oh yes. They threw it out, didn't they?

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 08/07/2020 14:45

The dynamic of using that phrase to a transwoman feels disconcerting to me as well. Can't put my finger on why

It jarred

But I couldn’t figure out how to say it...so I didn’t

Sorry ripples, feel like I should have stuck up for you there, but i didnt

Datun · 08/07/2020 14:49

The dynamic of using that phrase to a transwoman feels disconcerting to me as well. Can't put my finger on why

It's because it's blatantly sexist and simultaneously transphobic.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/07/2020 14:52

Yes, exactly.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 08/07/2020 14:54

It's because it's blatantly sexist and simultaneously transphobic

Actually Now i think about it

It would have had the shit reported out of it if it was virtually any other poster

Datun · 08/07/2020 14:55

Because there are people who want to stop the women here talking.

My process is always to allow your opponent to talk.

Let them talk their arses off.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 08/07/2020 14:57

Because there are people who want to stop the women here talking

I really, really don't, I have no idea about anyone else of course, but it's absolutely bonkers to think that hearing differing opinions is "shutting wimmin up!"
I mean - really?!
I can't even.

FantaOra · 08/07/2020 14:58

Men frequently use "girl" and "girly" to insult each other.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 08/07/2020 15:00

You’ve completely misinterpreted what EVERYONE else is saying.

We’re talking about reporting posts so they are deleted, literal erasure of women’s opinions.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 08/07/2020 15:02

fanta

Yes, ds1 kept getting called a girl by some of his friends

And ive no idea why...i doubt they knew either

ShinyFootball · 08/07/2020 15:04

The only posts I have ever reported are in other topics- obvious troll ops and ones where the poster seems very vulnerable (so mnhq can offer some more help).

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/07/2020 15:05

Going to try this one again -

Ok, one more time...how does JKR being white have any bearing on her stance on women’s rights?

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 08/07/2020 15:05

We’re talking about reporting posts so they are deleted, literal erasure of women’s opinions.

OK, fair enough, but what the fuck has it got to do with "erasure of women's opinions?"
If posts break talk guidelines for personal attacks/transphobic/inciting/fearmongering comments or whatever, they're going to get reported/deleted, it doesn't matter a toss whether you're man or woman!
Who'd even know anyway if it was a man or woman behind the comment if it didn't say?
It's just so bizarre to go "women's voices - erased!"
Erm... no it's called a discussion with differing views.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/07/2020 15:06

Is there a tumbleweed emoji on the app? Confused

MadBadDaddy · 08/07/2020 15:08

@TheSingingKettle49

Ok, one more time...how does JKR being white have any bearing on her stance on women’s rights?

BTW I just picked dressage because it’s the only sport I can think of where men and women aren’t separated to compete.

To a POC or their allies, JKR being white means she is a member of the oppressing class. JKR hasn't acknowledged this privilege, her timing during the BLM protests came without any acknowledgement in their direction that she might be distracting from their efforts.

As Home2018 put it: the world is moving from non-racist to anti-racist.
JKR doesn't have to put on a hair-shirt or give all her cash away or anything, but no-one else (except fragile white commenters) has a problem with privileged people being labelled as such. OPs take sits comfortably alongside "I don't see colour, why should you?" or "Surely all lives matter?" Sentiments like these mark you out as part of the problem, not the solution. Getting blocked was fair dinkum. This thread should have been 1 page long.

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 08/07/2020 15:08

Ok lemonade and madbad......What do you think about that?

I can't wait to see how they reply.

Holding breath, now...

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 08/07/2020 15:10

Holding breath, now

Fuck!

Don’t do that!
