Why r/GenderCritical was banned by Reddit

Hi! TRA here! Thought I'd take a quick breather from all the crowing, high-fiving, etc. to throw a lifeline to any actual open-minded critical thinkers wondering why Reddit banned r/gendercritical. Basically, you have 2 options when it comes to what to believe:

  1. It's a true conspiracy: silicon valley, hollywood & the media are in the thrall of the well-funded TransAgenda, the need for woke points, child-groomers, women-haters, MRAs, etc. etc.
  1. r/GenderCritical was hateful - if you want evidence then go to r/GenderCynical which existed to harvest said hatefulness. Read their strictly enforced rules about hate speech, misogyny, anti-feminism, pile-ons, doxxing, etc. (NB: abbreviating "trans exclusionary radical feminist" is not considered hate speech on this subreddit) and then sort their posts by "top" and "all time" and judge for yourself.

The trans men, trans women and non-binary people of Reddit do not hate women and do not tolerate abuse. Have a better day. x

@LemonadeAndDaisyChains

But you agree that someone can define what is womanly? Other than biology. Otherwise, how can you support TWAW?

I know for me there's more to me being a woman than just my biology.
So who am I to say that trans women don't feel the same?

Feelings might be important for an individual. But what relevance do they have for other people?

We don't organise society around individual people's feelings about any other aspect of their identity or personality, so why should 'gender' be any different?

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 06/07/2020 01:22

How do you know that wasn’t put there by a TRA to cause trouble? Answer: you can’t.

No, but alternatively -
How do you know that it wasn't put there by a "GC" person as that's what they actually believe?
Answer - you can't.
Whatever it was, it's hateful but apaprently hateful or transphobic isn't out there according to some.
Whoever wrote it, there's no doubt it'd cause harm being out there.

7Days · 06/07/2020 01:24

That horrible
But certainly not representative of GC feminists.

Transphobia certainly exists, which is shit and should be stamped out.

GC feminists want to keep the word Woman and keep single sex spaces where necessary.
We definitely don't wish harm on any transperson.

How would your feelings-based “definition” work in law? Or in medicine?
HeistSociety · 06/07/2020 01:26

The point is not that some people (mostly men, like Damian Barr) are not hateful to trans people. They are.

The point is that the post OP has just provided as evidence of GC Reddit hate did not come from GC Reddit, and had it been posted there, the mods would have removed it.

There were not posts like that on GC.

No, they just closed the entire GC Reddit forum down instead so it was obviously completely unproblematic Confused

HeistSociety · 06/07/2020 01:34

I just don't know how people feel ok about telling fibs.

I understand the OP dislikes GCReddit existing, because it didn't pander to their world view or feelings.

That doesn't mean GC was abusive; it wasn't. The OP knows that, yet posts non GC Reddit abuse to continue to lie about it.

That piece of abuse does not even remotely capture the tone or approach of GC posts. To continue to insist it does, when readers of GC know it doesn't, is just gaslighting.

It was not abusive. End of. It was ideologically unpalatable to the OP and cronies.

OK, you seem to have a more moderate voice on GC, I can get on board with your post.
I've DEFINITELY seen some dismiss the fact that trans people are discriminated against for being trans though, or accusing them of suffering from "hurty feelz" (actual words) so they obviously have no problem with trans people suffering even if you don't.
It's a sliding scale of transphobia on here.
Views like yours, fine - it's the shit hardcore stuff that hides under a veneer of concern on here that only comes out every now and again that's more of a problem

Lemonade

Is there a sliding scale of trans-ness, too?
Or should everyone under the Stonewall umbrella have the same treatment?

So, should an AGP cross-dresser have the same access to women-only spaces (such as providing intimate care to vulnerable women in a care home) as a fully-transitioned transwoman?

And are we allowed to speak out if we think that’s not acceptable?

HeistSociety · 06/07/2020 01:42

What is shit hardcore stuff?

That females are entitled to a place to talk with other females about the pernicious effects of gender on women and girls? Which is all GC was..

Yes. I can't read whatever the screen shot was, but I don't understand the relevance to this discussion.

This is a feminist chat board and it is striking how often men interfere to try to tell us that we're doing feminism or being female wrong.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 08:42

Yes Lemonade, Reddit is a bastion of thoughtful moral guidance. Closing a subreddit down must means it's really bad. I mean they are happy to leave rape porn up, so wow, r/gendercritical must have been terrible indeed! Hmm

averysuitablegirl · 06/07/2020 08:46

I've just reported the post with the screen shot. I've read the first sentence now and it's clearly transphobic, and MN quite rightly don't permit transphobia, so I hope that it's taken down.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 08:49

I'll leave this here with no comment, kind of like an appendix, I just thought you should see what I was talking about when I talked about hate on Reddit. Warning: It's very, very horrible.

Yes it's very horrible. Very horrible things are said to people directly by members of your community too. On Twitter, Facebook, in DMs. Every day. Thousands of messages of this nature are directed at GC women. Here's one sent to Posie Parker, OP:

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 08:51

Here's a whole catalogue of vile TRA misogyny:

www.terfisaslur.com

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 08:52

How do you think it feels to read any of that, OP?

averysuitablegirl · 06/07/2020 08:56

I agree that the screenshot is hateful - that's why I reported the post as MN don't permit transphobia and it has no place on this board.

Why would anyone repost it if there's no doubt that it'd cause harm being out there?

Isn't that what is known as weaponising transphobia?

Kantastic · 06/07/2020 09:05

OP's lies are pissing me off

Silencing women is bad enough, silencing women and putting words in their mouths to justify them being silenced is another level of misogyny. That screenshot OP posted has nothing to do with r/GC and the attempt to associate the two is repugnant.

That said, I recognise that some personalities do lump "everything I don't like" into the same category and label that category "bad people who are out to get me" and that may be what's happening here. It's possibly not OP's actual fault that their reasoning process works this way - but it's vicious misogyny at work whether it's unconscious or conscious.

I've been reported for saying OP is lying, so you can anticipate your post being reported also.

Person allowed to come onto MN and lie about GC, and MN response is to delete anyone who calls out the lies.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains I’m not sure if I’m misremembering you (brain sieve) but I thought you’d agreed that although you believed TWAW you maintained that they were still male ie can’t actually change sex / biology. Have I got the right poster?
