Maybe in your next role, you could play Robespierre? Grin

There would definitely be literal violence

Maybe if ER knew more about this kind of thing he’d have seen this coming.

maudspellbody · 30/06/2020 08:43

He has been particularly vocal about his discomfort and how he 'still isn't sure it was the right thing to do.'

I just think that's bollocks. He was pretty perfect for that role - and lots of trans women say he did it really well. Their problem seems to be 'but he was just acting it - not inhabiting it.' He wanted to do it. He did it. I doubt the uncertainty extends beyond when the interviewers cameras are turned off.

I think he has done enough apologetic behaviour and bowing and scraping about it to keep them from full attack. They've really been quite gentle with him on the whole.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2020 08:49

Eddie Redmayne got a lot of criticism at the time The Danish Girl came out which is why he is so woke now

Yes - tbh, that probably gave him some perspectives from one side (I doubt he's ever had much cause to think about women's concerns) which mean I can understand his stance now more than that of other people.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 30/06/2020 08:52

@CountFosco - Yes - you would be perfect! You could drop some fascinating square root facts into your performance ad lib. That would really bring the mathematician to life. Don’t worry about the middle age, short and fat bit. You can just identify as “as beautiful as Keira Knightly”. Or maybe even “more beautiful as Keira Knightly”. Maybe you and Benedict could have a competition to see who can name the most digits of pi! That would really make the cast interviews fun!

Some would argue that Benedict should be replaced by a short, fat, middle aged mathematician with a combover, bad breath and a dandruff problem. (I work with a lot of male mathematicians.) I disagree. Benedict can just identify as a brilliant mathematician. Instead there should just be lots of snogging scenes.

Is anyone giving Jared Leto a hard time for his portrayal of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club? I think he's straight, and he's definitely not trans although he likes eyeliner and nail polish. Could they be leaving him alone due to his status, perhaps? Too big a fish for them?

ThinEndoftheWedge · 30/06/2020 08:56

Reminded me of this
amp.theguardian.com/stage/2020/mar/11/actor-felt-forced-quit-musical-man-cast-trans-woman

When you do this it just perpetuates the idea that trans women are men … They are dressing up and misleading people. Also, creatively, it is just not interesting. To see a man in a dress, which is kind of what it will be, it reminds people of blacking up.

But...but...

The lack of insight is frightening.

BigGee · 30/06/2020 08:58

I take it back, he did get a bit of heat at the time, but it was 6 years ago, so entirely different landscape. I bet his Oscar stung some of them though.

SerenityNowwwww · 30/06/2020 09:06

He wasn’t chased off the role though - women have been scared off for doing the same. But hey, men rule ok?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 30/06/2020 09:14

Don’t think he’s on Twitter so no pile of poo coming his way.

This reminds me of the debates when there's going to be a new Doctor Who, which always annoy me because there's always people who suggest famous people who aren't actors. Yes they might look the part, but they wouldn't be able to bloody act it any more than I would.

I'd imagine there's many trans women who like to fantasise about being beautiful actresses. I suspect projection.

MorrisZapp · 30/06/2020 09:34

The gorgeous and talented Jared Leto came in for similar ire for playing a TW in Dallas Buyers Club. Think he won an award for it but 'that feeds in to the tired trope that trans people are just cis people in disguise'. There is no answer to this that satisfies the woke.

Ultimately, what they really want is for transwomen to play women. And to cancel anyone who notices it's a bit weird.

Look dearie, if I have to suffer Agyness Deyn speaking 'Doric' via Brigadoon then you'll have to suffer a wee bit of Hollywood sheen too.

Inauthentic screen women? Guess what, its all we've ever had.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 30/06/2020 09:38

🤣

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 30/06/2020 09:47

because, apparently, it's not enough to be an actor - you should have the lives experience of the character you are playing

Goodness, I'm quiet amazed that they ever managed to cast horror films. Imagine having to find enough actors with sufficient lived experience of being a zombie, or vampire, or superhero...

I wonder how those auditions go? Grin

In all seriousness though, like so many pps, I struggle to find much sympathy for him. I'll save it for people on the receiving end of death and rape threats for daring to speak about biology. It was only a matter of time before the purity spiral backlash reached him. The problem is I think we're more likely to see an apology for it (perhaps with a mild justification that he was trying to raise awareness and be an ally, but realises now that it wasn't the right thing to do) than the sudden realisation that the extreme left have gone so far around they're just popping back up on the right and just maybe JKR deserves an apology.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/06/2020 09:51

This shit is exactly why I see trans ideology as homophobic to the very core. This person can't even hear that they're saying "It's ok, you're not gay if you sleep with me". Which is to say "It would be bad if you were gay."

Also this "logic" is only going to work on men who were already OK with shagging transwomen. The ones who're straight still aren't going to be interested, and the ones who're violently homophobic are unlikely to be any nicer upon finding out that the person they were about to lash out at wears dresses all the time rather than just sometimes.

IsadoraQuagmire · 30/06/2020 09:55

Serve him right.

fiestar · 30/06/2020 10:00

But the guy who beats someone up in a gay panic is ok? He'd have been fine if all trans women were depicted by trans women on tv?? If that follows, it's probably safest if all trans women are depicted by natal women like in Coronation Street.

BovaryX · 30/06/2020 10:14

@SophocIestheFox

Poor old Eddie. It was all looking so promising, the Danish Girl was your winning card in woke top trumps and then suddenly- BLAM! It wasn’t a sympathetic portrayal that made you an ally, it was appropriative act of near violence that makes you the oppressor. You lose.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha🤣🤣

Maybe in your next role, you could play Robespierre?

GrinGrin
DrinkFeckArseGirls · 30/06/2020 10:35

We don’t need to feel any sympathy for him because he’s not experiencing ANY BACKLASH at the moment due to the Netflix programme. And any backlash he could receive, would be feather stroking in comparison to what we saw happening to JKR.

Wait - so Wesley Snipes isn’t really part vampire?

Binglebong · 30/06/2020 11:06

@SerenityNowwwww

Wait - so Wesley Snipes isn’t really part vampire?
Don't be silly, of course he is. And Stephen Dorff is full vampire which is why I sadly never bump into him in the day.
TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/06/2020 11:09

(Inserts inappropriate "well he can bite me" comment here)

This is why I thought Redmayne would be asked to comment, btw - he will have been Educated after Danish Girl came out, and thoroughly told off for giving such an accurate performance as a man with AGP. Saying the quiet bit aloud on giant screens really wasn't on.

maudspellbody · 30/06/2020 11:09

@SerenityNowwwww

Wait - so Wesley Snipes isn’t really part vampire?

Sadly, our Wesley has done vampires a disservice. You see what he did was 'act' like a vampire, which has reduced vampirism to a performance by non vampires. It's actually really dangerous and hateful to vampires and makes them far more likely to face stakes through the heart and death by sunlight.

If a real vampire played the part there would be no violence against vampires.

It's all absolutely logical when you think about it.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/06/2020 11:13

So, contemplating, if vampires can't be seen in mirrors is it possible to film them?

(Yes, I know this silly, but arguably less so than the idea of a woman with a penis.)

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 30/06/2020 11:15

You can’t film them kittens

I know this for a FACT

Because Mitchell on being human was in the film casablanca but all you can see is a chair falling over...

I really want to watch it and see if a chair does fall over

andyoldlabour · 30/06/2020 11:22

Wow, a man playing a transwoman -
Hang on a minute ----
Is anybody thinking what I am thinking?
