That bloke in Labour who looks at women like he's seen a rat has outdone himself here.

It's going to be interesting. Who wins on reverse privilege?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/06/2020 00:47

Wanting sex segregation because you've been sexually assaulted is exploitation of your own assault???

^Dear God. Some men really do consider that women are less than shit on their shoe, don't they.
^^
^He is actually viewing J. K. Rowling's sexual assault as nothing more than an inconvenience to him.

I'm not sure I can fully articulate how this makes me feel as a survivor. Despair and white hot anger goes some way.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2020 00:47

Starmer's problem here isn't that its the trans stuff. Its that its the faction stuff. And if he tries to deal with the factional stuff, he's going to get smeared as a transphobe. And if he doesn't deal with it, the left of the party are going to constantly be a problem for him and will prevent him from winning swing crucial votes.

In reality, is the issue one that is a key one for voters?

Thats what Starmer ultimately is going to have to weigh up.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 28/06/2020 00:52

Thinking a bit more. Starmer has been accused of failing to deal with the abuse of girls in the NW when he was DPP. Whether that's true or not is neither here nor there. The right wing could accuse him of failing to address the abuse of women if he does nothing. If he does something, the left wing of the party will be outraged but does that matter electorally?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2020 00:53

In reality, is the issue one that is a key one for voters?

And if it is .... in which direction, among ordinary voters rather than political bubbles?

tribunemag.co.uk/2020/06/labour-must-stand-with-trans-people-against-a-new-section-28

This is the piece in which Russell-Moyle made his unpleasant remarks about JKR. It's like he wrote it by picking out Genderist clichés from a particularly snide tombola.

Russell-Moyle combines the charm of Rachel McKinnon with the analytical mind of Lilly Madigan, the mad starring eyes of Adrian Harrop and the facial hair of a 17 year old boy.

Toseland · 28/06/2020 00:58

Vile man.
I think HE is exploiting her sexual assault ordeal to score political points in transgender row.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2020 01:00
  • Vile man. I think HE is exploiting her sexual assault ordeal to score political points in transgender row.*

You've nailed it. That's exactly what he's doing.

ArriettyJones · 28/06/2020 01:01

Sheesh. Which other leader was it that was forced to play whackamole really early on like this?

He better had whack him anyway.

Random63638 · 28/06/2020 01:03

I just read the original article, he's not a great writer and I got a little lost. What struck me though was about the 'pass'. 83% of trans people have been called names he states. Presumably trans people get called names because they don't pass. Maybe it would be better to own that trans? I would whole heartedly support that.

Honest question, is easier to get other people to pretend you are something you are not, or to embrace what you are? I don't get why trans can't be celebrated in its own right.

HemulenHouse · 28/06/2020 01:06

How dare she centre her own feelings about her assault? It’s NOT ABOUT YOU JK!

JamieLeeCurtains · 28/06/2020 01:07

I think this is the first time that the shadow minister has had this level of publicity about his views and opinions.

He's entitled to them as a person. But I don't think they're vote winners. Or particularly pleasant.

My professional twitter timeline is normally mostly science with some centrist politics, history and botany*. The shadow minister is being roundly rebuked.

*Oh the laughs we have.

ArriettyJones · 28/06/2020 01:08

I don't get why trans can't be celebrated in its own right

That was the paradox that tipped this all over the edge, wasn’t it?

Success by passing/invisibility, screaming “TWAW“, demanding we all admire the Emperor’s fine new suit of clothes.

It’s the AGP tendency.

ArriettyJones · 28/06/2020 01:09

Oh the laughs we have.

It’s your own fault for including botany. The rest of it sounds grand. Grin

HemulenHouse · 28/06/2020 01:10

Yep. Trans in its own right we defended to the hilt. Then they came for our rights.

HemulenHouse · 28/06/2020 01:12

I’m a unicorn.
Yeah you are!

I’m dressing up as a unicorn today.
Cool!

I’m getting a horn at the hospital.
Is that... safe?

I’m going to fuck that horse....

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 28/06/2020 01:12

Spot on Toseland

ThePurported · 28/06/2020 01:22

Starmer's problem is that he chose to have this charmer in his shadow cabinet. Iirc RLM made his views about women very clear during the pledge debacle. I don't think anyone would have missed him?
And then there are others, like Lisa Nandy, who presumably still believes that rapists should be able to choose to go to a women's prison.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/06/2020 01:34

I think HE is exploiting her sexual assault ordeal to score political points in transgender row.

YY. Exactly.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/06/2020 01:36

83% of trans people have been called names he states.

I'd bet nearly 100% of women have been called names.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/06/2020 01:38

Some names I have been called by men:

TERF
Bitch
Cunt
Whore
Slut
Slag
Willy warmer (!) Grin

WarmthAndDepth · 28/06/2020 01:49

When will it fucking end? So distressing. So many of us are survivors of men's violence against women (and girls oh my fucking God! ) and this shit is excruciating.

NotAGirl · 28/06/2020 02:26

It'll be interesting to see what Starmer does and whether he realises if he doesn't sack R-M he's lost all credibility

On a separate note this is the second double barrelled name shadow minister confidently stating their dodgy views publicly

Sushiroller · 28/06/2020 02:42

To be a credible candidate in the next general election Starker MUST address this by sacking that odeous man

blackpoe · 28/06/2020 02:54

@Mollyollydolly

Big test for Starmer. Lot of people watching ..
Let's hope he does the right thing again.
