Bunbury's guide to community disruptors part 5

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember our monitors would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3691023-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-4

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Go well Witches Gin

I think that's at least the 3rd name change from the prolific 'loller'.

Almost have to admire the persistence, given how comprehensively they get handed their arse every single time...

BlackWaveComing · 30/08/2020 23:02

I've started reporting posts/threads. I hate to do it, because I hate the way TRAs have weaponised the reporting process.i don't like to report people. But it's impossible to accept the blatant trolling that goes on without responding.

Also, happy Hebe is still around. I thought she was gone. I actually trust Hebe to moderate. Never get the 'gleeful moderation of FWR' vibe from her.

Hmm
BlackeyedSusan · 30/08/2020 23:57

hmm, is it a bank holiday or something? whole threads now seem a little suspect.

DianasLasso · 31/08/2020 22:53

Has the "survey" thread gone? I was quite enjoying watching the "methodology" being torn to shreds (along with the SPAG, and general idiocy).

Winesalot · 01/09/2020 10:27

The survey gets a feature on twitter accounts today.

Siablue · 01/09/2020 11:23

Jane Clare Jones has done a very amusing take down of the survey. Genuinely these people are really thick .

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 01/09/2020 12:13

Could someone explain the reasons for the survey thread being taken down? I was stupid enough to start doing the survey, but realised after a couple of questions that I disagreed the whole premise for the survey and stopped.

I thought the criticism I saw here was fair (and amusing).

OldCrone · 01/09/2020 12:17

The message was just that it broke Talk Guidelines. No idea which one(s).

DianasLasso · 01/09/2020 12:21

They got it on a technicality, I think - there's a section for "non-member requests" where surveys are meant to go.

But of course that wouldn't tick the "fishing for screenshots" box.

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 01/09/2020 12:22

Ah...

DianasLasso · 01/09/2020 12:27

That thread of JCJ's is gold!

MichelleofzeResistance · 01/09/2020 13:11

I agree Sia - I was honestly quite shocked in some of the threads on the weekend about how unable some posters seemed to know what their opinion was, to even read posts accurately or to comprehend what was being said. Or to be aware of how they make themselves look in conversations where they are insisting they're sharing 'a different opinion' - but don't know what it is, why it matters, and have no ability to stand behind it or to reason about it.

It descends down to the Eddie Izzard sketch of You're a twit.... 'cos you are. Year 7 lunchbreak stuff.

Mammatino · 01/09/2020 13:30

I’m seeing a tactic Ive not seen For a bit, just wade in and insult everyone until the thread gets taken down. Classic.

ItsLateHumpty · 01/09/2020 13:31

So why didn’t they move it, like they do for eleventymillion other threads?

Am I missing something (which is not unsurprising)?

Has the speakers corner thread gone?

Mammatino · 01/09/2020 16:23

I think so. It got quite heated and personal from one poster.

I wrote one methodology breakdown and was in the middle of writing a second one and was a little disappointed the thread disappeared b/c the survey itself as well as the deconstruction was providing such comic relief. Sad
Kit19 · 01/09/2020 18:20

Bit strange fir someone to dig up a post for June to post the same thing that had been said a million times in the thread....

DianasLasso · 01/09/2020 19:29

Ah yes, "be kind."

Nope. "Fuck" and "off" are words that spring more readily to my lips at this point.

Kit19 · 01/09/2020 19:30

screenshots to prove what big meanies we are I expect

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 01/09/2020 20:16

Omg I'm sorry I just do not have the patience to deal with the disingenuous, obtuse, idiocy combined with the strangling censorship on this topic. I don't have the right temperament.

FireUnderTheHand · 01/09/2020 20:31

"Be Kind", so much comic relief lately!

LMAO
